Buying a new Scyk/Z-95/Tie-Fighter is not a waste. For 6k-10k creds you get a ship that is upgradeable and has a hyperdrive. Its the upgradeable part that is most important.

By the time I finished doing the Privateer missions to allow me to train my first skill box, I already had plenty of Cert 1/2 looted parts to put on a Scyk. Investing 20k (10k for the blueprint + 10k to make the ship) was a much better option than the going 50k for a Dunelizard blueprint + 20k to make the ship. Doing kill duty missions through 1111 in that customized Scyk, I got about 80k creds and more looted parts so when I was ready to upgrade to a Dunelizard I could:

  1. Afford it

  2. Outfit it cheaply (nothing is cheaper than loot)

If you're an established player with a good bank account, jumping to the next level ship and outfitting it may be a good course for you. You can buy the firepower needed to grind up to the next class ship. But as a newer player, the smaller investment of around 20k will grow into something much more significant. And the 'starter' ships, built by a Shipwright and upgraded with parts, is more than viable to get you through your first sets of missions.

It really depends on your play style. Mass is not the end-all-be-all of JtL. Many people will fall into that trap. A tricked out z95 can do wonders in the hands of the right pilot, and a Y-wing can be a space coffin in the hands of the wrong pilot.

My suggestion is to try both out, and see which you prefer and which suits your style.

If I had my choice, I'd still be a Creature Handler.
Instead, all I got was this lousy padawan robe.
