Thread: What is an ace pilot?

Since Kessel becamea PvE zone, I don't think anyone that earns the master box should be rewarded the title Ace Pilot anymore.
My squadron differentiates between those who mastered before the Kessel change and after. There are 1st generation are the ones who finished before the change. The second generation mastered when the devs messed up NPC speed and maneuvering and made them crazy. The current generation is the third where everyone has access to good parts and help from people of previous generations.
The first generation automatically got Ace status and the later generations need player kills. Otherwise they are just masters.
I know pilots who mastered before they changed it and after and there isn't any difference. There's just as many of what I consider "aces" in both groups--those I want on my wing every time we're in space, and those I target first whenever the battle begins.

I agree with Leaph.
Its the knowledge you have and the way you act is what makes someone an ace.
Back when Kessel was PvP enabled I killed a few guys while there, this was before the slight reduction in PvP damage.
Back then there wasn't a whole lot of skill involved in nailing someone in PvP, it was who saw who first. In regard to this I'm not talking about set up fights or duels, just the random encounters.
Im so lucky to have him on my server

I've yet to have anyone get mad at me for making a mission too easy.
Though, i know of others that have had it happen to them. I always find it quite funny.
Heh, a friend of mine and I have gotten a talking-to for taking all the loot, when we were helping people get through their levels. Amusing. Do someone a favor and they get nit-picky.
As for the whole Ace thing, does it really matter? I think in terms of the game engine, it's good that "Ace" and "Master" are simply tied to the skill boxes, just like everything else in the game. It in no way diminishes the skills or accomplishments of other pilots. Your reputation will still stand, based on what you do. But there are a lot of casual gamers out there who either don't get to play for long hours, or who simply don't like PvP. In terms of the game fiction, these people may still want to get very good at PvE, and enjoy having their character gaining the title.
So if it makes you feel better to separate PvE/PvP aces in your head, fine. Just be careful about demeaning other players just because they don't play the game the same way you do.

You know in real life, most aces made most of their kills before the other person saw them. From Max Immelmann, the Richthofen brothers and Rickenbaker to the Black Sheep, Yekaterina Vasilyevna Budanova and Erich Alfred "Bubi" Hartmann, they all learned the single most important thing to winning a dogfight...shoot first before they see you.
This is why they rode high and came out of the sun.
QFE: Very good point. It's all about, say it with me, "Situational awareness."
Sure I love a dogfight as much as the next. I'm new to the PvP arena.. no pre-nerf stuff, mastered after the kessel nerf. Currently I'm 14-2. My first engagement was during tier 3. didn't really know what I was doing, no overloads running (or even available). I'm happily grinding out XP and FP and Imp player comes through the asteroids toward me and opens up. I managed to dodge his fire and get behind him. My brand new set of crafted guns cut through his shield and armor in a couple of passes and he was gone. Imagine my surprise however when his wingman (whom I hadn't realized was there) opened up on me and did the same. LOL! I got pissy tells, something about almost being done with his mission, to which I replied, "Well then you probably shouldn't have fired on me, eh?" I repaired and declared and went looking to even up a little more, but could never find them.
My second loss was just a couple nights ago, in Kessel in a B-wing. lol. and I'm certain that'd've turned out differently if I'd been paying more attention to my surroundings instead of typeing a lenghty tell. Note: don't lecture and do training runs in a sluggish bomber while overt and distracted. ("Thanks, Egon. Don't cross the streams. Good safety tip, got it." lol) The rest of my kills were that same night. I got this taste for blood. lol. and feeling much more nimble in my A-wing I went to town. Some were group kills with my guild, some solo. Some targets aware, some weren't. I consider it all good. Everyone knows the risks when declaring, even if they just want to farm FP.
Do I consider myself an Ace? No. Others may, but until I "feel" it, my jacket and helmet remain in storage. (RP thing) I'm a good pilot and I love helping others out with missions if I've the time. Though I always ask if they've attempted it on their own first. (I don't see the need to create more masters who can't fly...)
Sillyrack: .......so they get the same feeling of satisfaction I got from completing a mission. (Normally I just don't use overcharges)
I love this suggestion, BTW!!
I don't consider myself an Ace yet, because there're goals I haven't achieved. And I know there are many better pilots out there from whom I can learn, both as partners and opponents. I have difficulties making a run at a gunboat w/o taking at least 1 shield hit, usually more. I haven't soloed the corvette yet. I have blown the ISD numerous times, I find the vette more difficult.. and I'm still learning about my equipment. (Ok I had a lvl 8 reward gun and 2 lvl 6 reward engines in my inventory and didn't realize what I had. lol) Perhaps when I pass those milestones I'll consider wearing the jacket again.
Ok I got to rambling. all these people calling me at work wanting things are distacting.. lol. What is Ace all about? To me, it's attitude, experience, respect, and a touch of humility. Pre/post kessel nerf? not a factor.
Oh and Mogee, you're an ace in mah book. <g> thanks again for the RE las' night. ![]()

Lucky, I had to dodge krayts. In tent feet of snow. Carrying my ship on my back. And I liked it! Kids these days...Hey get off my lawn!
Pffft! Whimps, all o' ya! I actually had my friends outside *pushing* my TIE towards the vette, we couldn't afford gass money, but still wanted to look cool doing it.
True story.

At least you had a TIE. I had to get my brother to throw me real hard as he rode past on his bicycle. As for blasters? A flashlight and a magnifying glass.

Flashlight!?!?!?!?! Exploiter!
