Now the question is this, would an Xwing with 2 missle slots give the rebels a "poor mans oppressor" and restore some semblance of balance? While not having 3 missle tubes, its manuverablity should more than make up for the 3rd tube, and the two tubes it would have, should be amply effective in getting the job done that the oppressor does so well.

If your trying to make it an Opressor then sure it's extra manueverability could certainly make up for the third tube ... but then you'd have to give up one of your gun slots.

Yeah funny that Aerial combat hasn't relied on guns since World War II, yet in a super advanced civilization you are effectively a noob if you use missles? Please explain this to me.

Show me a modern fighter without a gun and I'll show you a high speed bomber.

If im not mistaken, in the begining of the vietnam war, F4 phantoms were not equiped with guns at all. They were later added as a "gun pod".

Dorjhe is right though, in modern aerial combat, missles are the primary weapon. Guns are a secondary weapon, and in air to air engagements, seldomly used.

Missles in a JTL context, are, what i would consider, a specality/tactical tool. You use them for special circumstances, and they have tactical application.

F-4 Phantom IIs aren't exactly "modern" - they're barely third-generation. They were undergoing their final flight tests in the late 50s. The F-8 Crusader (and F-4 II competitor F8U-3 Super Crusader) was a MUCH better all around aircraft.

The F-8 has the distinction of being known as "The Last Gunfighter." The AIM-7A Sparrow rang out it's death knell.

The history lessons are all very interesting (by the way gun pods were added to the phantom for dogfighting enemy aircraft) but what at all bearing have they on a fictional starship, in a fictional universe, which is described in said fiction as having 2 torpedo tubes, yet does not have them both in a game set in the same fictional universe!

I'd like to see the current X-wing gone. Let sw's make 2 variants: 1 with 4 gunmounts (1 on each wingtip). 1 with 2 gunmounts (2 wingtips, 1 mount like now) and 2 missile slots. A PvE and a PvP version. Mass should stay the same.
