lol.. I was with that group, and also have flown wing on a mission where one of the objectives was to kill one of those cruisers, so I'm pretty sure it's both a random spawn and part of someone's pilot tree (might be Inquisition, actually, or possibly RSF--forget who were were flying for). That is a really cool ship, though, and can dish out a lot of damage. Lot of fun to fight.
NOOOO!!! We can't both be right!!! (kidding...of course we can both be right). But it was a tough kill with a lot of escort fighters around ... I hate helping people with that mission

My experience with these was similar to some of the above posters: BE and SS seemed roughly equivalent in terms of difficulty, but SS's missions were all longer and more annoying, which meant that if you failed any of them, it was much worse. In fact, I was called in as a wingman on so many Storm Squadron missions that we failed so many times that, despite the fact I've never been a SS pilot, I know it much better than I do the two squads I have mastered (Smuggler's Alliance and Black Epsilon).
The talk of the Inquisition here is interesting, though, because for the first few weeks after JTL came out, the general consensus seemed to be it was the easiest of the Imperial squads. Makes me want to go try it out here and see what's up.

Uhh..yeah..sure. Tier 3 missions for SS are not soloable, no matter what equipment you may have. I'm sure pilot skill plays a little bit into it, but some of the best pilots on this board haven't been able to solo them, so pardon me while I cast a shadow of doubt on your story.
Having solo'ed all nine squadrons up to the corvette mission without a single failure I can assure you that it is quite soloable.

There's a light cruiser in the Inquisition's tier 4 exit mission. It has a fighter escort and is fairly easy to take out with the standard joust-and-boost method.
There's also a cruiser with an interesting design that's a static spawn in Dathomir space.
It is named "Dark Eclipse" and is apparently a Warlord Heavy Cruiser. It flies alone with the same braindead AI as an Imperial gunboat. The usual follow-at-a-distance tactic works fine on it.

Ummm... I have to differ with your opinion here Aelric, I soloedSS Tier III Mission, I, II and IV. I couldn't do III simply because the time requirements wouldnt allow me to destroy all the waves of ships as required and I kept getting a mission failure because I didn't destroy the ships fast enough, brought 1 friend along and it was a breeze, but they are definitely soloable.

My mastery list so far includes Arkon's Havoc, Vortex, CorSec, and Smugglers Alliance. I'm working on Storm Squadron right now, and made 4333 tonight. (Started as 1111 earlier today.) I really don't understand why people claim this squadron is so difficult. The only difficulty I had was the very first SS mission, which I did in a TIE fighter. (Took me four tries.) Once I finally finished the damned mission, I trained to 2223 and it's been a breeze since.

Just my two creds.
