They have the B-wing, and that's an experimental at this point in the timeline. Why they dont have the defender for us rebels to shoot down i can't imagine. I like the new x wing though.

i highly doubt that the ships will severely imbalance PVP. do the small hitboxes and disproportionate mass of the awings severely slant PVP in favor of the rebels now? nope. plus the increased mass on lighter ships will possibly open up a new dynamic for pvp we don't understand, and pave the way for establishing a role for heavy fighters against POB ships, when capital grade loot is introduced (providing that is the way the cookie crumbles).

keep in mind, we don't really know what the changes entail either.

Weird thing about space PVP, it continues to feel more balanced the more we get into it. At first I thought damage was way out of control, but after a couple large-scale battles, I thought it was great. Then I thought it was foolishness to use anything but a light fighter, but after about three months of warring, I'm starting to see a lot of use for the other classes of ships. Sure, in a 1 on 1 dogfight a light fighter mostly has a big advantage (though trying to make that first pass on a Krayt or X-Wing can be rough), but in a 20 vs 20, the judicious use of support craft can make a huge impact on the battle.

Example: us Imperials had been winning handily for a few weeks when the Rebels started to use a lot of A-Wings. One week they fought us to a Pyrrhic victory, then the next they won--and sensing something had to be done to turn the tide, knowing that these small, hyperfast, impossible-to-hit A-Wings were the root of our problems, we hit on the idea of flying a number of Oppressors equipped with Image-Rec missile launchers. Adding some formation-based tactics to that, we regained our advantage and have been pretty successful again both weeks since its introduction.

What will the Rebels do in response? I dunno, maybe it's time to start using X-Wings as the space superiority fighters they're supposed to be, or use the hilariously awesome suggestion from the Starsider forums of running 3-4 B-Wings in a tight group as a sort of flying flak platforum against our formation (I am so jealous us Imperials can't do this, by the way) while adding extra missile support. Maybe we'll even start to see some Longprobes used to nail our light fighters. (I was thinking a standard Y-Wing with turret would be great for this, actually, if only they had two missile slots.) Or Firesprays, which could play as the Rebellion's answer to the Oppressor.

My rather wandering point is there's a lot more to major space combat than maneuverability. And from what we've seen so far, the Rebels may gain another PVP-worthy light fighter--if the Heavy 95s hit, say, 30-40K mass, they're instantly a major threat--as well as adding mass to the X-Wing, currently unloved in PVP as a sort of "jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none" thing, but which may emerge as a more valuable ship if its mass is opened up to take full advantage of the kind of firepower it can pack into a relatively small frame.

Will this somehow be equal to or greater than the new Imperial ships we'll get? Who knows. It's just too early to tell how all this will play out. Considering our server, at least, is only just now getting into combined arms and tactics beyond the level of "hold the line until we're within spitting distance, then it's every man for himself," I don't think we've even explored many of the tactical possibilities within the ships we've currently got available.

I can see where worries about the advanced TIE Advanced and Royal Guard Interceptor may come from, but for now, I think they're premature, and may well be for some time after the expansion comes out and we've had time to work through the advantages and limits of all these new ships.

all you PVP naysayers out there should take note of this, it's a sentiment you'll hear more and more as time passes.
