Most if not all conventional Star Wars lore had been thrown out the window in this game, not only on the ground parts but also in space.
Basic TIE's are not supposed to have hyper drives or shields. They were cheep mass-produced crafts, and Imperial doctrine focused on numerical superiority.
The TIE Advanced was not made in significant numbers, and while it did have shields and hyperdrive and was use by special squadrons, it was mainly a step on the way to making the TIE Aggressor.
So balancing would be the only real argument in not introducing the Defender right?
Well I very much doubt that the Defender would be more memorable in this game then the JSF or the Imperial Guard TIE are now. It would not need to be anyway, and it would certainly have a larger hit box.
What little balance there are left could only be improved by giving the empire a large fighter, and the TIE Defender would at least be a real craft star wars craft, and not one invented for SWG.
In the Rogue squadron books, it talks about SOME ties being hyperspace capable, and having shields. However, these ships were also harder to handle.
Now, I have thrown everything out the window that I know about this game. As soon as I seen you can play on Dath, I couldn't believe anything I seen in this game. But I guess people need their Rancors.

That doesn't really matter, they didn't do it that way.
Anyone else remember what an Assault Gunboat looked like?

I think timeline is a total non issue. Hell, ROTW is like what? Episode 3? The game proper is supposed to take place just after episode 4 i hear. So we already have past and present combined into the here and now.
Timeline? We obviously don't need no stinking timeline!
Soooo...you think Kashyyyk was destroyed after Episode III, or just vanished from the Universe; and that the old ship designs just vanished "overnight"(relatively, considering how long the galactic culture had lasted)?
We need to get the Y-wing and Z-95 removed, they were used back during the clone wars. The Lars Homestead shouldn't be around in the original trilogy, either; it existed back in Episodes 2-3.

Did you know there's already an Episode IV?

Paladon wrote:Come to think of it, should they have reactors? I'd think they were solar powered, due to those panels(that'd add a fun aspect to flying TIE's, having to depend on a static energy supply instead of having the freedom to swap out a reactor, heh).
Yes. They used the solar energy from the wings to power the systems. Among them the Twin Ion Engines.
So TIE's should not have engines or reactors as components either. Or rather the reactor power should be detriments by the system they was in and the engine should be intergraded in the chaise. (and that would add a real purpose to the winglets, other the a component that can soke up damage)
From:http://www.starwars.com/databank/starship/tiefighter/?id=euThe hexagonal solar panels supply power to a unique propulsion system. Microparticle accelerators propel Ionized gasses at a substantial fraction of lightspeed. These gasses are then expelled from rear vents to generate thrust. The ion streams can be directed along amost any vector, allowing for the TIE's incredible velocity and maneuverability. The twin ion engines have few moving parts and require comparably less maintenance to the starfighters of the Alliance.
Just to get the details out.
Paladon wrote:I think you mean the "Avenger". So far as I know, the Aggressor was invented by JTL.
Yes, My mistake... should have doublet checked.
Actuarially the Lars homestead should not be around... is it not supposed to be an abandoned ruin? And the one thing that was needed to destroy the time line are the abundance of Jedi, and the visibility of the Rebel Alliance
Not even going to mention the existence of Endor as a planet AND space zone.
Sufficient to say the words like Timeline, continuity, cannon, or star wars lore seems mean little to SOE when they add new stuff.

I can't believe I missed this post before......
Even though this probably won't be read by very many people, it is my responsibility as the head of the Pilots for Uglies Foundation to remind people and the devs that we've been asking for uglies longer than anybody else, and that Uglies are more appropriate for this part in the timeline, bla bla bla bla.
I'll leave everything else to be debated by my fellow pilots (oh, and no TIE Defender, it's just a year too early in the timeline). Deep down you all know you want uglies, even though most of you won't admit it.

Seems you missed Episode IV

I can honestly say I have no desire to fly an uglies. When I first read the dscribtion of them I thought to myself "lame" thats all they could come up with. It just came from a writer with no imagination, and the best he could come up with was an X-wing with Tie panels (or what ever). Thats the lamest idea in the EU. Besides, we already have ugly ships (most of the neutral craft are extremely ugly), flame away.
Kirsha - Kettemoor
With uglies the combos are endless, you have TIE-X's, and X-TIEs, and Y-TIEs, and TIE-Ys.....it goes on and on, that's the beauty of it. And don't make fun of the X-Wing authors, they were some of the best books for people who enjoy a squadron's look at the galaxy as opposed to one or two main characters who most of the time are in the middle of some galactic soap opera (and I know 'cause if bought most of it, hehe).
There's no need to hide your true feelings, you all know you want uglies, there's no denying it. The Pilots for Uglies Foundation is very serious about this, and we will not stop doing whatever it is we do untill uglies exist in this game.
Thank you, you may now return to your normal Forums activities.
