Actually, the Star Wars site reads "communication and deflection domes," and even so, are you seriously going to trust a misplaced word on a franchise-**edit** site like starwars.com when EVERY PIECE of Star Wars history eitherh now or previously in circulation said differently? Read the books, play the games, and yes, watch that odd "coincidence" in ROTJ...those are shield generators, and they're always going to be shield generators whether you like it or not.

I'm not saying Wikipedia is canon or that it's right. It does mention that there are shield projectors in the domes. I'm not going to argue over the internet with you about something as stupid as the sensor globes on a Star Destroyer, so this is (likely) going to be my last post on the subject.
Actually Ackbar cries the shields are down when he sees the dome explode, i.e. when he sees the structural damage on the Star Destroyer he knows the shields have come down, not that the big domes are shield generators.
The shield generators are around the ship in various locations, the domes provide the standard (noncombat) shielding that protects from micrometiorites and the like, as well as housing communications systems and sensor arrays.
And thats canon.

In SWG, they might be shield generators...but they're (not sure if it's canon or not) sensor arrays.

I think its so funny how no matter how much material says the globes on star destroyers are shield generators, including multiple games, movies, and books, people will still say that they are comm domes.

me too...
Ackbar crying the shields are down was about the Death Star.
As for the shields on the SSD, the domes were taken out, then a bridge oficer said they'd lost the bridge deflector screen. It's pretty apparent that there's a relation between the two, and ifRotJ isn'tcanon, I don't know what is.
i was pretty sure in the RotJ the dome thing was destroyed and then an Imperial officer says "we've lost our bridge deflector shields" then some other officer blabs out something to the effect of increasing forward fire power don't let anything get through. the first officer points to the window at an out of control A-wing then the second officer repeats faster and with more intensity his line then the first officer helplessly says "too late" you hear screaming you see crashing you then see fire and smoke. then the camera pulls out and you see a star destroyer plunging bow first into the the death star.
its that first part of that long run on synopsis that really makes me believe that the domes are deflector shield generators. they could have a dual purpose of being a sensor array as well but whatever I'm not going to fret over it.
