I think one-weapon-slot ships will have it easiest to run WO3 once fixed.

I'm the guy Tic is talking about.

Last night, I was dodging missilea lotof the time [and yeh I got the witnesses].

Thing is, I realise that this 'wonderful pre-nerf engine' is NOT the key.

Speed is one thing, but at lvl 6 re'd to a p,r,y of about 70..it'll have an optimum turning circle wider than one of the newer 82 TS ones with the same manouverability rating.

Frankly, believe what you like about me claiming to dodge ordnance. Thing is. You can ask NorRam,Hostile and Xian' [all imps] and they'll confirm what I've done.

As for A-wings vs Oppressors. Well, once/if you get round the missiles, then in turning fight and if your A-wing is set up right,Oppressors in most caseshave little chance unless they get a down the throat shot on you.

Going back to the missile thing. Its by no means a 'works every time' solution. I only dodged Norrams salvo once and every other time he has blasted me when using IRs. Hostile and I duled once and I managed it and as for Xian', I was doing it quite consistently against him, although he was only firing one at a time at me.

I'm working on finding out how it is done, but I do have some theories which seem to stick for every time it has been achieved.

1. I panick and think 'omg...missiles..oh joy'

2. You cut throttle to 90% [in an a-wing] using Dumicus' hotkey idea.

3 More or less in the same instant, you boost for about 1 second.

4.While executing this you flip your craft AROUND your opponent. Do not turn away and let the missile chase you. IT WILL CATCH UP.

5. You boost again, this time for a bit longer and pray.

Another note. I never managed it when the person achieved a lock at long range. I am fairly confident that it is only achievable if the opponent fires them at you at close range and you're already corkscrewing/turning.

Its vague I know, but I'm going to test this with a friend and we're going to fraps it [fraps is a program which lets you record game footage] and I'll post it somewhere then put the link here.

I think I can see how your tactic works. If I'm reading this right, you drop to 90% throttle, but then hit the booster sending you over your max speed...this probably confuses the heck out of the missile. Then you spin around your target, making the missile chase you some more and waste flight time, then hit booster, again confusing the missile. So in conclusion, rapid throttle shifts combined with extended flight can cause a missile to miss. That's how I'm reading it.

Thankyou.

You just made more sense out of my own tactic than I could.

Thankyou again. Yes. That is the way.

It is just a matter of perfecting it now.

Would be awesome if you could get this to work

I will see if i can run some tests too.

Would be cool Kitten.

I am fairly sure it could be perfected.

Also. Anyone flying on Bria feel free to attack me with missiles. You'll be aiding my research hehe .

Use Chaff, a good shield, shunt cap to shield, and use terrain - asteroids, and space stations - to your advantage. And try to throw his missile lock off - changing direction often, and relative to the distance for long enough to get out of his target reticle.

Ramona volunteered to shoot some missiles at me... the result was however quite depressing

I managed to dodge not a single missile and Ramona did notice some really extreme zick-zack maneuvers. Also i did not find it possible to start my booster more than once before the missile hit me as they have that restart timer.

From my perspective it doesn't seem to work... but ill gladly accept the opposite if you find a way and manage to film it with fraps. Good luck!

Actually, I did some math to see how things would be in another post. Here's a copy of it...

-------------------

Image that you ship currently has the following energy needs...

  • Engine - 1500
  • Shields - 2000
  • Cap - 800
  • Booster - 1000
  • D.I. - 500
  • Guns - 2000 each
  • Ordinance - 1100 each
  • CM - 800

The above stats would be for decent RE'd components. If you were extremely patient you'd be able to shave a little bit more off, however I think its safe to assume that the above listed power requirements are what a lot of people have to deal with. Now, let's do the math... Assuming WO3 has been fixed to now use 3.333 times as much power, and also assuming that the Cap Overloads have been changed to follow the same energy use pattern as the Engine Overloads and Weapon Overloads, here's how big of reactor you would need (before running RO4) to be able to run EO4, WO3, and CO4 in each of the following ships...

  • A-wing - 20k energy
  • TIE Advanced and Dunelizard - 26k energy
  • X-wing, TIE Oppressor, and Krayt - 28k energy
  • Firespray - 27k energy
  • B-wing - 33k energy

As you can see from the examples above, having an uber level 7 reactor is going to be nice if things get fixed. Now, lets redo the math of what you would need if most people stop using WO3 and CO4, and instead switch to WO2 and CO2 to go with EO4...

  • A-wing - 15k
  • TIE Advanced and Dunelizard - 17k
  • X-wing, TIE Oppressor, and Krayt - 19k
  • Firespray - 18k
  • B-wing - 22k

Even in this situation an uber level 7 reactor is going to be nice for most of the heavier fighters. For A-wing pilots, an uber RE'd level 3 reactor that hits 15k will be very handy, though most will probably be forced to try to squeeze by with a crafted Mark III. For the even heavier fighters, you're either going to need an uber level 7 or 8 reactor, or else you're going to have to give up some droid programs, or else sacrifice the mass for a crafted Mark IV or Mark V reactor.

------------

As you can see from the math above, the only A-wings that will be able to keep running WO3 once its fixed will be those willing to dedicate 14k more mass to mounting an uber level 7 RE'd reactor. Those who want to run WO2 will have to free up another 7k mass or so for a mark III crafted reactor. To get that extra mass their going to have to drop to a lighter engine, drop to a lighter gun, or use less shielding.

I still think thats a lot... I have not seen many reactors above 17k. There are of course these rare super reactors with up to 32k generation but even these will have trouble powering an entire B-Wing. Also it will be extremely hard to get even a 15k reactor into an A-Wing.

As for missiles... 1st_Viduus voiced some nice ideas in the Pilot Individual Tactics Thread that definately are worth trying out

with proper RE'ing, you won't need to have a 15k reactor.

And I would say that Cap Overload 3 is enough for most - I know it is enough for me - so, that alone cuts down on energy demands in a pinch.
