As to betraying 3 factions, moving from neutral to either Imp or rebel is explainable storywise. Moving from rebel to imp or vice versa and then back isn't.
Sure it is! One of my guildmates and I temporarily left the Alliance and joined the Imperial starfighter corps. After we returned, we wrote a nice little RP story about returning to our allies after having spent months undercover in the Imperial Navy, gathering information on starfighter deployments and tactics.

Sure! And they fell for it 3 times! ;P
But it still doesn't reallyjive, IMO. I've already said why, and I think you got it, so I'm not gonna browbeat ya with it. You play the game for different reasons than I do, and that's cool.
I can certainly understand wanting to try all the faction missions. Ithink I might build me an Imp on some random server somewhere and try those missions, just ta see how much tougher it is.

I think the biggest reward anyone should get for 9x mastery is a 10th badge. Anything else, access to ships, prerequisite for a profession, more equipment (even more than the 9x Reward items they have), would be unfair. The "gotta grind 'em all"mentality has already done a lot to hurt the ground game, I see no reason to resurrect it here.

I think the original idea has merit, but I would say it shoud go more like:
9x Ace, now an Imp: You can fly all Imp and all freelance ships.
9x Ace, Now a Reb: You can fly allReb and all freelance ships.
9x Ace, Now a Freelnace: You can fly allReb and all freelance ships. ((This because many of the reb ships, according to EU, were available in the private sector, the Z-95 Headhunter is probably the most well known to have crossed lines like this, and if I recall, was never actually a Reb ship anyway, just the basis for the X-Wing))
Honestly, seeing Imps flying X-Wings, and Rebs flying TIE...it would really ruing the Star Wars effect for me. You want to be a spy, join the faction like a real spy would appear to.

My two credits:
Astromechs are not faction specific. As a rebel, my Awing and Nova use flight comps; all other reb fighters use droids. They are ship specific. I have both in operation.
I don't support multi-ace certs, but I do support an elite pilot tree for X number of masters.

Bad idea. Does it really need to be explained why? Ok, space pvp is not very balanced as it is. If you could choose at a whim to fly a specific fighter from any faction you could pick the best type of fighter to fight against whichever particular enemy that you are going to fight. That wouldn't be very fair or realistic. You have chosen which faction to fly for, so live with the ships that they get to use. From the timeline perspective it would be crazy to have rebel pilots flying ties, and vice versa.

I'd rather have it based on prestige points spent allowing you to purchase a specific ship certification.
As for those saying they don't want to see a rebel flying around in a tie or whatnot. Rebels are... well... rebels. They'd fly any ship they could possibly get their hands on. If they could swing getting a Super Star Destroyer can you really see them mothballing it cause it 'doesn't look right'?
The only reason rebs might notuse imperial ships is their strategy is to train up elite pilots and put them in ships with shields to make sure a goodly number of their elite pilots come back, and tie's aren't typically known for their survivability.
Look at the extended universe if you really must. Tons of former Imperial pilots (where do you think most of the rebel pilots come from anyway? They can't all be farmboys/girls who just happened to have an interest in flying), and many feel too set in their ways to switch ships. So they fly Alliance tagged Interceptors.
So I have no problem with allowing any ace pilot who's once held an ace in a given faction to be able to use pilot prestige to rebuy their cert.
Plus its something to do with those prestige points.
And you could make each additional certification cost significantly more PP than the one before so people would really have to do some serious work to get certed for all ships. And possibly even put a cap of like three to five ships you could buy back the certs for... ever.
