someone explained this a lot better than i can, but basically, the visual representation (the red/green bolts or whatever) is just part of the little program that interprets whether you hit or not, which can be thrown out by lag either on your part or the servers. basically, even if it looks like you're hitting your target, no damage will occur.

i had this problem a lot on my old system (which is pre-historic), and my eventual soloution was this:

go to kessel or a constant spawn site.

try to keep your flying style smooth- not hard to do in a y-wing, just throttle back and circle chase the npc's.

let go your senses! let go, luke!

well, not quite- ignore completely where your bolts are going and whether or not they register a hit graphically. try firing at various points around the reticule and watch the shield/armour values of your target, as these are the only true indicators. when you find the general area, adjust your targeting accordingly, and i think you'll start finding yourself doing a lot more damage.

i've had a couple of occasions where lag was putting me waaaay off- i suspect that's what's happening to you.

do this on a few different ships, and you should start to get a feel for not only your ship but also your system.

Trade for some guns that fire more often. The slow firing, really powerful guns may be too much for you to time. Rapid fire guns that do a little less damage will allow you to hit even a "jinky" ship.

Do you use a joystick? Sounds like your screen might've been a bit off center, try hitting 5 on your keypad to make sure you're looking dead ahead

or a sync or lag issue, I have heard of friends having probelms like this sometimes with chat lag too. After logging issues were solved

yeah lag will do that. +400 ping you really start to notice it. THe game appears to function properly but because of that lag its not calculating the same thing that you are seeing.

could be other things i supposed but that is by far the most likely in my experience.

Also, hit /toggleCombatTaunts to eliminate the lag that the useless "You can't outfly me! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!" can cause.

A few people have hit on some suggestions right on the money.

What ship are you using?

Are you leading the target? ( the leading reticle is junk )

Also, supposedly it's fixed now, but for a LONG time there was an issue
where the client and server would go out of sync, and you'd be unable to hit anything
until your client and the server resynced.

Also, you have to take into consider ation the sheild top/bottom invulnerability bug.

Once in a while you will score a hit, but it will just bounce off the enemy ship.

I Highlighted the section above, because, at least on the Gorath server, this issue is NOT AT ALL FIXED!!! Every so often, there will be ships that either start out, or during mid-fight, completley un-hittabe (or more accuratlet, un-damageable). It's not a matter of leading the target, or any other "piloting" type aspect, it's justthe same sync issue CONTINUING. Usually in any giben hour's time flying, there will be anywhere from a handful of tiems/ships that will be this way for several minutes, up to sometimes virtually constantly happening every other ship spawn. Whatever's causing STILL needs work to be fixed, as it's still happening enough to be troublesome, and especially irratating when it's presistant during high tier missions, especially. Nothing more aggravating than blowing full capacitor charge after charge into a ship, only to watch as 90'5 of the shots that would normally be hitting it do ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING but pass right thru...

You're probably aiming to literally, as the lead indicator is terribly inaccurate. The trick is to aim slightly ahead of the lead indicator. How far ahead is dependant on the speed and direction of the moving target. Aim closer to the indicator if he's moving away and vice-versa. Also, aim further ahead with faster targets and vice-versa.

heh, i find i hit more often when i aim slightly *behind* the lead indicator - i aim less behind it (almost dead on the lead indicator) when it's moving away from me, and quite a bit behind it (sometimes up to half the distance between the indicator and the enemy ship) when it's coming towards me.

i use mouse though, don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Same here! Slightly behind the lead indicator is usally the sweet spot for me. I use a mouse also!

This is definitely the result of lag.

What I have noticed is that when the ground game seems very laggy to me, I will be unable to hit anything in space. When the ground game is running fairly smoothly I have no problem hitting things in space.

I agree with the above poster who said itmay be a lag/sync issue. The ship you are firing on is not exactly where it appears to be on your screen. This makes it almost impossible to hit it unless you get lucky and shoot where the server thinks it is.

The other thing that I have noticed is that the amout that I must lead the target (the location of the"sweet spot") will vary based on how much lag I am exeriencing. Some days I need to shoot between the target lead indicator and the ship, while on other days I actually have to shoot in front of the target lead indicator. This does make it difficult to be consistant as the amount that I need to lead my target varies from day to day.
