The guns aren't meant to be a true defense, they are an AI timekiller. Just taking out gun5, the shields, and the engine means more targets for the the AI to plink off before it gets to critical ones.

If you strip the guns, a lot of people report similar results. Even though the guns regenerate, they are no longer in the queue for the AI to destroy, thus it goes right after the reactor and bridge.

That's my hypothesis based on you and the other people with this problem, and my experiences on the run.

I will do it your way and report back. If in deed the regenerated guns are not in que for the gunboats to kill that would explain the single pass kill they get on it.

Are you doing the RGI mission, or the Vaksai or Heavy-X?

For some reason the gunboats on the RGI mission are only tier3 and are easily dispatched before they get in range of the Vette.

Actually doing the Vaksai mission for my alt. Thought it was all the same, apparently not.. Its 3 tier 5 gunboats, the first one goes down in under a min but just as I kill the first the next 2 spawn with 4 to 6 fighters.

Ah, there ya are then. It's a bit tougher.

  1. Vape the escort.

  2. Get in blind spot directly behind 'vette.

  3. Use missiles to destroy the shields and secondary shields.

  4. blast the engines from behind.

  5. stay in blind spot untill the vette is captured.

  6. harrass gunboats to keep them off of the vette and chasing you

  7. don't get dead

  8. when the 'vette hypers out the gunboats will no longer be chasing it, they will be chasing you.

  9. hyper out

  10. don't get dead

Ugh, can I add my voice requesting a normal font?

There's some good feedback in this thread - the only thing to add is understanding the angles required to shoot out the reactor. If an NPC has missiles it's easy, if they don't they have to line up the shot. Even though the vette can usually do okay if you survive to the point of the gunboats, you can use your own ship to draw a little fire off them and keep the gunboats from getting an angle on the reactor.

Also, throughout the mission, target the vette and check the reactor. I've finished vettes with the reactor at 100%, I've had it knocked down to 25% in the first wave. If the reactor was already damaged, then one small hit from a gunboat would have wiped it out.

I've been having some small difficulties with the Vaksai mission too - it's ok when the gunboats fly in a straight line but when they go all crazy ivan on you it's a bit hard to stay out of harms way.

I'm currently flying a Rhyxryxk or whatever the heck it's called - with a 2500 shield, 2 x lvl 8 3600 dmg guns, 1 x lvl 7 3000dmg gun running WO3 - and I can't seem to kill the Tier5 gunboats in time before either I or the corvette cark it.

Anyone got any tactical advice to use in regards to these looping, jinking tanks? Or am I going to have to resort to getting help or outfitting one of those b22's I have lying around...

When taking out the vette take it slow...
Make sure you disable the vette after it's 9000 m away from the point you first see it.
If you do it right you'll only see one gunboat.
When taking out the responding fighters shoot them till they aggro on you then let them chase you around...do not kill them. The vette sustains less damage.

Here's what I've done every time I did mission:-

Take out the escort.
Take out gun 5, settle in behind the vette's blind spot
Take our shields 1 and 2.
Follow the vette at a safe distance until you are about 5k from the station and dont shoot it at all.
At the 5k mark, take out it's engine and let the crew take control.
When the 1st wave of fighters appears just disable them, dont destroy them, this buys you more time for the vette to continue its journey.

If you do this right you should only get 1 gunboat spawn..and if REALLY lucky none at all.

If you wait long enough to disable the corvette you won't get any gunboats. sometimes you get one, but this usually indicates you did not wait long enough.

Last time I did the mission withsomeonethe gunboat chased ME and ignored the Vette altogether. It was not even my mission. Rather than fight the crazed gunboat, I simply led it away. I hypered after seeing the "mission complete" text.

As an aside, the gunboats that spawn on this mission are WAY to fast to be... well... realistic. Gunboats are large, slow, heavily armed ships. These things do at least 900. Are they supposed to be gunboats or A-Wings?

There is a simple method to complete this mission

  1. Take out gun 5 on the vette

  2. get in behind it and take out both shields with missiles (mark 3 concussion work best)

  3. wait till the vete is about 3.5km from the station. (cant remember the exact distance, but its around 3.5km)

  4. Pop the engine

  5. The vette should reach the station before the second wave of gunboats arrive

Just to note, the "distance from station" numbers a lot of people are giving, vary from mission to mission. The 4.8km figure is the hyper out point for the Neutral Vaksai mission. I'm going to call Sememom's memory faulty, because I can't think of any of the 3 that are still flying at only 3.5km out.

I always pop the Alliance corvette's engines at about the 5k mark. It hypers before it hits 4k, I know that.

NO ONE seems to understand this. On the Kashyyyk mission you do not need to take out ANY guns, at all.

No, not even #5. The 'Vette has a huge blindspot directly aft. (thats in the back for the less naval minded)

The only time I've failed is when people don't listen. The guy I'm helping either get's wasted by the Vette before the takever sequence is done (because he didn't listen and stay far enough away right after the engines went out). Or some hotshot goes in and takes out all the guns. I've gotten to where I wont help someone with this mission unless it just me and the mission holder, or some pilots that know the drill.
