Thread: I frakking HATE the new Battlestar Galactica !!!!!

It's almost impossible to beat nostalgia. If you're to young to have seen galactica the first time, you'll probably prefer the new one.
If you have seen it when it was new, you're much more forgiving of all the crappy effects and such now.
Hence us old timers thinking "what the feck is with these ROTW ships"!
But anyway, on the new BG, it is of its era, hence the cylons looking like humans. Do I really eed to spell it out for you? They are suicide bombers. Somewhat in a similar vein to Enterprise, when it suddenly went all militaristic and hunting down the aliens that performed a "terrorsit act" on the american part of earth post 11th of September.
Art takes its inspiration from reality (not that sci-fi is art). A good example of this is Star Wars, where the A New Hope is based on the Battle of Britain. Small number of plucky fighter pilots defeating the nazi/imperial (check the uniforms (the STs have a smaller version of the Wehrmachts gas mask) especially the officers big pantaloons) ubermenschen from deploying their greater military firepower. C'mon, the similarities between the Xwing (looks like its born to fly and combat is its home) and the Spitfire are obvious. Lest we not forget the slower, less manouverable, but capable of taking greater damage Hawker Hurricane, or do I mean Ywing. And you cant tell me the clean, militaristic, aggressive technological lines of the ME109 arent echoed in the Tie Fighter!

As an aside, most of the grief directed at the new BSG is due to the racial characteristics of the characters. Considering when the original was made (in america) having a 2IC who was black WAS a big thing (plus Boomer of course, he was cool). The lack of black americans in corresponding positions in the new BSG drew a lot of flack.
EDIT - What the hell is "frak", its all a load of "felgarcarb" to me!
Got to love that bit at the start of the Ateam when Face sees the cylon and is like "dont I know you?", hehe!

Good point!! I was wondering if anyone else noticed this.In the original from the 1970's where race relations were not at their best, you had 2 black officers in recurring roles. In the new BSG there is 1 black enlisted in a recurring role. I can see why it drew some flack.

In the first series they were pretty much trying to portray a eutopian society where racism didnt exist and everyone was happy till big bad cylons came aknockin, I mean just watch the original move, they got big garden with PEACE writtin out in flowers lol. This new show isnt supposed to be all hugs and kisses, Apollo isnt a perfect little boy scout, the XO's a drunk, his wifes a power hungery **edit**' and the colonial president is due to croke in a few more episodes..... Also if i remeber from the BSG: Lowdown correctly, CMDR Adama is mexican.
Also, if people were to actually watch the BSG Lowdown on scifi, they explaigned pretty much all the reasons they made thing the way they did. For example is the new series people where suits, ties, etc. istead of big funny looking costums. They did all this to make the world of BSG seem for realistic and for people watching to be able to relate a bit more to the series. They also showed how they did all the space battles, the way when they "shoot" a space scene the camera remains stationary as though theres actualy a guy out there filming it. Makes alot of sence.
As for the veryintricet and numerous plots in the show, this gives the show the ability to last much longer than many shows because there is so much more story to tell. I mean Stargate SG-1 in many ways is much the same, over the course of 9 years, pretty much every world or peice of technology they encounter plays a role in some other episode down the line, even if they are rather small parts. This adds the the depth of the show and makes it more interesting. They arnt soaps, soaps arnt even real shows, they are just excuses to have comercials on day time tv.
EDIT: Oh and this belongs mor ein the GAT forums than Pilot, although JTL would be awesom if it were like BSG

All your points above are fulfilled by SW. GL wanted something futuristic, but, worn. Like it was lived in. I.e. speeders may be fancy tech, but they wear down and get superceded etc. And as on a back story to tell, roll on the SW tv show!
And you just proved my point about the philosophy of an era determining the art of time. For example, immediately, post-war (where the only nukes EVER used where deployed against civilian targets, something generally forgotten) all those nuclear mutant films. Like "Them", got to love those giant ants!
Nahh, just change the flight physics to those of Wing commander. That was much more fun while not being too realistic like that other game....cant remember the name of it..the one where you piloted a frigate.

And Jtl would be crap if it was like BSG, this is SW and if you want to play a BSG online game, either wait for one, or make one.

Ok, nothing against you, but i dont get the example there.... are you saying nukes in BSG or fat man and little boy (think that was the names) that were used in WW2? and i dont get where the gaint ant come into play either.
I suppose this is true, Personaly i would love JTL more if it played more like the movies. A BSG style flight game would also require WAY to much skill on the pilots end for SOE to do it, people would actually have to *GASP* try!!

It means that the films of a certain era show the feelings of people at the time, post war scifi was all radiated mutants, mccarthy era was all hidden insiduous aliens, recent times have all been aggressive terroristic enemies.

JTL does play like the movies and EU, its called PvP!

I think the reason people wanted the LOTR sytle ranger is because that what the devs told us we were. The said ranger were ment to be creture centic when the ranger corrs ask for things more in the military ranger sence. So since they said most the ideas and hopes people had for ranger were focused on it being a woodsman like the said were should be, now they turn around and make it a military ranger. Thats where the debate originated IMO. anyway back to the OT.....

This is similar to the Ranger debate atm. (from this point dont take offence) Some people dont understand the new spec-ops ranger. They want ranger to be a LOTR style woodsman. Well ungfortunately GL had this idea of a ranger, and it is now being fulfilled in this game. If you want a LOTR ranger go play a LOTR fantasy game. Just as, if you want to play some other style of space combat, piss off to another game that provides it, this is Star Wars, the amazing world of George Lucas's imagination, and, I love it. No, your not getting a PvP damage reduction in space, go watch the films.
the bidi-bidi-bidi robot was from buck rodgers with Lee Majors.I believe everyone had that hairstyle until the 80'sthen everyone went to the more fashonable Mullet which still rules today among several truckers and half of Arkansas. As for the Nostalgic BSG I prefer the more robot looking cylons then the new ones. And I liked when the chicks on the old show wore the tights, instead of them acting like dikes. It is way to soap oprea like now for my taste.
