3rd person view allows me view more of the space around my ship and allows me to view the attitude changes a target is making. I only use 3rd person when flying a POB ship.
1st person view allows me to judge intertia effects better when manouvering. Makes for finer piloting control adjustments.
So ideally we could have a mix of both and have 2nd person view.

I always use my mouse and keyboard. My preference is 3rd person view.

Only joystick, only 1st person, cockpit off mostly. (Well, I fly ships with more cockpit obstacles than a T/?.

Joystick, 1st person, cockpit on. The only ship I had vis problems with was the B-22, so to get round that, I don't fly it, simple. One reason I love the JSF is the cockpit view. You get such great vis sat there in your little cocoon.

Joystick (Saitek Cyborg Evo), first person, cockpit view off. Although, on the rare occasions I fly my JSF, I turn the cockpit view back on...the cockpit frame on that is just too nice to keep turned off. I used to like the immersion value of having the frames on, but I found that I am a much better pilot with the frames turned off.
I mess around with 3rd person from time to time, and almost always use it when flying a POB. The problem (for me) with using 3rd person on a fighter is the same as if I use an overhead view in a racing game...I can see too much of what the vehicle is doing, and it causes me to overcompensate.
On this topic, I have a curiosity - does anyone that uses 3rd person in a fighter (not POB) ever use the camera angle that constantly keeps your target in view while dogfighting? I have used this with my POB, and I was thinking that if I could get used to it, it might be a really nice thing to use in PvP. Any thoughts? Like I said, I have yet to try it in a dogfight, and it may in reality be the worst idea ever, but I am curious to see if anyone does it currently, and how does it work out?

Joystick, first person view with cockpit turned on.
I like to try to pretend I'm flying rather than "moving the little ship around."

1st person with mouse + keyboard and cockpit frame off, tried a stick but wasnt getting the accuracy I was after.
Occasionally switch to 3rd person to see whats going on around me but when you're flying a firespray with it's huge ass that takes up 85% of the screen it's a bit hard to aim lol.
