I think it has more to do with the fact that most of us have been conditioned to assume that everyone is male as the majority of the population in game is.

Ok, I'm a CorSec Pilot, did the CPG quests, got the message a Imp Station wants to talk to me. Went and did the Royal TIE Quest (Got the X-Wing Badge though), then went back and did the Vasaki Quest. Then I switched from Imp to Rebel on the ground. Eyma says a Rebel Outpost wants to talk to me now, but when I get there all they will let me do is go overt. So it lookslike you can manage two out of three.
