If you get a decent crew together(top and two front turrets with mining lasers).
You should be able to fill at 46K hold(yeah...I have one in my y-8 now) in about 1 hour 20 minutes.
Have the 3 turrets learn to shoot at the area where the main laser(gun 2 is shooting). This creates a cross fire effect that instantly vaporizes any astroid and any smaller chunks. Once the cross fire is established all the turret gunner have to adjust for is distance to astroid chunk. So the turret gunners only have to move the aim up or down to compensate for the distance. Have the pilot do the most of the "aiming" by manouvering the ship.

I equipped the mining laser in slot 2, and the tractor beam in slot 0. Mining the asteroid is easy, but when I pressed "P" to use the beam, it seemed like it was shooting sideways, even after I went and manually adjusted it to point forward.
I took a look last night at the mining laser and tractor beam layout and I was initially wrong. The Tractor beam goes in slot 0 and the mining laser goes in slot 2. You should have no other guns loaded on the Y-8. If you can see the tractor beam firing out of another spot other than the main gun on the nose of the Y-8 you have a weapon installed in another slot.
I took the beam and the mining laser out, put them back in, now the beam shoots forward but i cant turn it off.

That is correct. You have to go to the turret and fire the tractor beam manually to turn it off. Kinda weird, but so is much of what SWG has.

Do you have a quest reward or a crafted tractor beam installed in the top turret?

nice thread
here's what i was planning to try once get y-8
i have three characters and can run all at once,4 methods planning on trying
1.pilot in pilot chair of coarce
other two in forward turrets
hold ship between 500-550 from asteroid
forward gunners run targeting and fireing macros to target and shoot chunks
then pilot manualy break of chunks could be done macrod if find good fire rate that not to many chunks at one time
2.pilot in chair
gunners top and bottom
pilot breaks off chunks
gunners shoot chunks top will get main chunks bottom any chunks that float past
3.pilot chair
one gunner front
second top
pilot breaks off chunks
front gun breaks up chunks
top tractors debris
4.pilot chair
gunners top and bottum
park ship side ways top gun break off chunks
top and bottom break up chunks till in hold
any one try these methods with actual crews?

I've tried a few methods to try to efficiently mine with a crew.
1. Park the ship in the general area where the medium chunks flow to after breaking off the large astroid. Rotate the ship so that the top turret and front turrets have optimum firing arcs. The disadvtantage of this is that only 3 guns are working to gather astroids as usually the pilot controlled gun is not pointing the right way and any ship movement throws the turrets accuarcy off.
2. Chase the astroids and use a cross fire effect to anniliate an astriod. The only thing you have to watch for is to make sure the turret crew doesn't accidentally blow the astroid being chased prematurely. The medium chunk has to be in the middle of the cross fire patter before the crew should open up on it.
3. The tractor pull. Put all tractor beams on all turrets and have the gunners tractor in the astroid. Similar to the crossfire method but using tractors instead. Only the pilot gun blows the astroid. The problem with this method is the turret gunners are always sceaming in pain cuz they can't see anything when they fire the tractors.

I think #3 is probably pyro's best bet for solo mining with 3 accounts. Put tractor beams in the bottom two turrets. Aim them and fire them once from each toon. Now use the tractor beam toggle from the pilot position to turn them on. You might need 2 quest reward tractors here, I'm not sure if crafted ones can be aimed from the forward turret. In my experience, crafted tractor beams do not work properly in the top turret, but the quest reward one works fine.

So, have I been completely in the dark about key-binding turrets that you are not in?
'Cause that would mean that anyone could run a POB ship just by using hotkeys for each turret.

This only works for the tractor beam.

Problem with the tractors is that they don't render, so you can't aim them in turrets....
