Hate the mouse, so a little question for you, how do you configure JTL for keyboard use??

oops posted too soon.

in addition;

I know that the physics in space are different than land and using the rudder petals to control yaw in real life makes since, but in JTL i could not hit the side of barn trying to slide in on a target using the rudder petals. So i let the rudder control roll and the joystick control pitch and yaw. It took some geeting use to but with a little practice i works great for me.

And if your a big fan of the BUFF like the Tie Bomber, you can really make that thing turn on a dime, stop the horrible drift with good throttle control and stick savy. G luck

Cheers

I've got a Saitek too, I think the cyborg one. Can't remember off hand, I'm at work. Its got a throttle sort of behind the stick near you which is kind of annoying but 4 function keys with a shift key for even more that makes up for it.

In addition to the hat keys (which are programmable) there are 2 buttons on either side of the hat that I use to cycle targets and booster (which needs to be out of the way because there's noting worse then hiting it accidentally). There are also two keys on either side of what would be the alternate firing key (right at the thumb - which I use, keeping with tradition, as the missle launcher). These 2 keys I mapped to component targetting and alternate weapon (if I need it - 2nd missle launcher say). One of the function keys I use as 'target whats in crosshairs' button. I rarely use if but its sometimes necessary. I've been trying to hit the ships without the crosshairs these days so I leave it targetted on another ship.

The joystick twists so oyu can roll so its perfect really for flying in this game. I used to have a force-feedback wingman but I got this one and its much better. I think it was only $30.

PConsole, I'd really be interested in knowing the actual model of your stick. It sounds like an old SideWinder I have (and loved!) but which is incompatible with WinXP. Since switching to XP I've been looking for a new stick to replace it. Any more info on this toy of yours would be much appreciated.

Found a link on the saitek site....

Those little knobs adjust the height and angle of the keypad. Great joystick.

Oi, that's an expensive stick! 70$ USD....

Well, we'll see what my next paycheque looks like. Maybe I can scrounge something together... Dang, I want that stick!

Not sure I'm crazy about the throttle though... My old SideWinder had a really smooth throttle dial. I really liked being able to set my throttle to 1/3 with a flick of my thumb. Well, I'll have to take it out of the box before I buy it and "feel it out."

i had the cyborg evo until about a week ago when i got my x52. at first i sucked with it but after getting used to the new stick i think im a bit more accurate than before. its great having all the controls at my fingertips.

on the stick there are 2 hat switches, one i use for pov and the other i use for ctss3, my ctss3 macro, /dump, and bomberstrike/iff(depending on which pilot im playing). the other buttons are for fire, counters, ect. the toggle switches on the base of the stick i have setup for my overload commands.

the throttle hat i use for targeting. down is cloest, up is last that shot me, and left n right are cycle. when i hold thestick pinkie switch the targeting hat switches to friendly targets and players. the scroll whell on the throttle i use for targeting components.

im still not quite done, eventualy ill set it up with different modes for navigation and pvp and such.

I started out using my mouse and keyboard. For Christmas I received a Logitech Extreme3DPro joystick. I found the directional on the joystick to be too wild. Now I steer, control throttle, and targetwith the mouse and use the joystick to fire and other miscellaneous functions. I don't need to use the keyboard at all. Some might wonder why going from two devices to two devices would be advantageous but I find not having to use the keyboard more comfortable and easier overall.

I still prefer the joystick. I tried the mouse and didn't like it.

I use an Evenstrain Modded Cougar HOTAS and just can't say enough good things about it.

I use a joystick and it has the speed slide on it as well.. real handy when facing faster oponents and you need to turn quick.. I just crank that thing up and down as fast as i can and crank my stick back and im turned completely around in a second.

A long time ago I was a really really big fan of the joysticks. Then about 2 years ago I started to play FreeLancer. This a space sim that only allows mouse keyboard. At first I hated it but then fell in love with it. When JTL came out I was very excited to find out that you could use the mouse keyboard. After switching in the option to virtual joystick the mouse works out really nice. I use a 5 button optical mouse and have all the buttons mapped for what I use most and the keyboard remapped so I can keep my hands in one place. The only complaint I have is that you can not remap the throttle to the scroll wheel on the mouse. I would be in heaven if this could be done.

I have since tried to use a joystick, and a gamepad. The gamepad was really bad. I had a hard time with accuracy with the joystick at first but I really like the twist handle for rolling, and having th e throttle on a slider is really nice too. I found that a force-feed back joystick has a really nice feel to it as well. I am thinking about picking up that Saitek Cyborg Evo Force or the logitech one. My favorite joystick has to be the MS 3D Extreme one, but I have no idea where I could find one of those. I like the idea of the Saitek x45 and x52 but there is no force-feed back on those. I am just wondering of any has tried one of those nostrums (sp) gaming keypad with a mouse?

I play flight games since my ATARI 800 (Elite was great at this time!) and allways used a mix of keyboard and Joystick. And the same goes here too.

In Beta it was sometimes necessary to use the mouse as help in dogfight, but since the game is out officialy, this problem don't exists anymore for me.

But I don't use one of the new sticks. I "only" use an old Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro, because I don't like the grips of all the new sticks, they all to small for me (I'm a really big guy, with large hands too) and I don't like forcefeed because of some troubles with my wrists....

So this IS personally.....
