Both the A-wing and B-wing were in existence pre-Hoth; the A-wing, as near as the timeline can be constructed, would be between the prototype and manufacturing stage right now, as it was designed before the evacuation of Yavin. Project Shantipole, which spawned the B-wing, wouldn't quite be in operation yet, but would be completed long enough for B-wings to be deployed shortly before the Alliance established itself on Hoth.

A-wings were developed by the Alliance (am I right in saying it was Jan Dodonna who was one of the heads of the project?) shortly after the battle of Yavin. In fact, I think the designs were drawn up during the time they were on Yavin.
They were in service way before Endor, but although they were superior to TIE craft for speed and defences (they had shields etc.) they were extremely high maintenance and were almost impossible to keep a whole squadron of them running at any one time.

My favourite A-wing fact is that due to the lack of resources and in order to keep the craft as lightweight as possible, some A-wings, if not the majority of them had wood crafted instrument panels.

I wouldn't complain about A-wings before the Hutt and Black Sun fighters, at least the A-wing is actually in the timeline.

Jan Dodonna and Walex Blissex (the man who designed the Delta-7 Aethersprite and, I assume,Eta-2 Actis) designed the A-wing together, and, since Dodonna is listed as one of the two primary designers, I'd say the A-wing was prototype stage or later by the time Dodonna was captured by the Empire during the evacuation of Yavin IV. Which means, at any rate, A-wings exist in some form at this point in time. The B-wing does not--but then again, the TIE Interceptor probably shouldn't, and I'd guess that the TIE Aggressor and Oppressor models were offshoots of Zaarin's research, which means they shouldn't exist until post-battle of Hoth.

Timeline arguments in SWG are kinda like verbal agreements - they are worth the paper their printed on

Hate to put it this way, butits theacceptance of it that has given the Devs the "artistic freedom" that has us in the situation where the timeline means squat in the first place.

Im not saying that timelines shouldnn't mean squat - i am merely stating that they do mean squat. If i had my way we'd have monthy event changes and timeline progression like Asheron's Call.

SWG is alot like startrek movies, they are in the same universe as their franchise counterparts but exist outside the normal timeline flow.
