Thread: OT: Other space games?
Im thinking about trying Eve Online again, Anyone play that lately? Bored me to tears the first time, but i think thats because its fairly complicated and i didnt get it all. Whats the latest on it?
Jumpgate? whats that one all about anyway?
Anything else out there?
MMO, there aren't a whole lot. Never did try Eve, mainly cause I've heard a lot of mixed things about it.
Playable online, there are a ton and a half. Some are quite good, some are a waste of time. My personal fav's on these are Descent Freespace, Homeworld 2, Freelancer.
The storyline is a bit weak, but fairly open. You really don't have to stick with it too much, just do some of the major stuff. It gives you a lot of freedom to do a variety of other things instead of just sticking to the story.
For people that want an in-depth, extremely huge space game, I'd recommend it.
Eve has some very good points to it in that the economy is much more stable (and player run) than any other MMO. It has 'monsters' to bash on and 'missions' to do. Setting up a ship can be fun with lots of options. The downsides are that it still has alot of deadtime due to travel, picking up loot is even a pain and pvp boils down to those in battleships taking pot-shots at each other at 120km.
Getting your character setup for any given ship is a known quantity since all training is time based. It can be a fun game but I think the best way to approach the game is to get it and put it away for 2 months while you learn your "learning" skills. Then getting yourself setup in advanced ships is alot shorter and makes it a better experience (by the time you're bored with one ship you have the skills to move on to the next).
Note that recent (past 6-8 months) developers have added many skills to the game (mostly electronic warfare and missile related), so you would be smart to pick a specialty at the beginning in regards to your weapon type (laser/rails/conventional/missiles)and ship type (combat vs support vs industrial). Gone are the days where you can do more than one thing at the same time and be competitive. I say competitive because the game is a PVP game - in both the market and in terms of territory (materials, loot, etc).

Damn, wish I coulda stuck it out but my group kinda went away.......
Ah well, was only 7 in the whole thing anywho.
But, yeah, hauling all those commodities to other stations to gain mills upon mills in creds
Gotta love it.
They ever move that one rock in the way when you travel to Amananth?
I played EVE for a while, but got discouraged whenI realized I could never be one of the top players in terms of skills. Not that I've ever been the top in anygame (no joke - five years of Everquest and I hit the max of65 the day before they raised the max level to 70), but I hate knowing I'll always be inferior. Not to mention, PvP being what it is in that game you can't really opperate alone, and the big pirate corporations (guilds) tend to demand you live in game and have no personal life.
Still, very fun, and very unique.

Emma is still there, she's just not perfectly aligned between the gates. But she is just as hard to see as she was before.
The US and EU servers are combined now, so numbers are a bit up from before.
I was actually considering picking that up again, if I ever quit SWG. It was a fun time while it lasted.
