Thread: Handy chunks of asteroid goodness... and Outpost Listings!

Ok guys, as of today (5/13/05) I have gathered some bits of info regarding asteroid mining. I hope you find it helpful.

- All mining lasers have a special "Mining Rate" (displayed or not).
This rate is: Damage/100

This means a 150-300 damage mining laser has a Mining rate of1.5-3.0

The "Mining Rate" is the damage that is applied to an asteroid.

- ThisMiningRate isnot affected by the vsArmor and vs Shields modifiers on thelasers.

Asteroids have neither armor nor shields.

- All asteroids have Hit Points. Even the big "mother" asteroid.

You can find out the current HP of an asteroid by using the /examine command.

When an asteroids HP reaches 0, it blows up. Even the big "mother" asteroid.

- A Mother asteroid will generate a Large Chunk when it's HP is reduced below a 50HP mark.

It will not generate one at 16450, but will make one at 16449, and at 16399.

In general, 50 points of damage will make an asteroid chunk.

- A Mother asteroid will not generate a new chunk if it's maximum number of chunks is already present.

The level of laser you are using "might" influence the maximum number of chunks. Need to test this.

- A large chunk will usually have 50 HP, and will blow up when it reaches 0 HP.

It seems to always have 50 HP out of 100, but I have not checked all asteroid types yet.

- Small Chunks are listed as having negative HP, and will usually blow up with one hit.

Sometimes a small chunk can take up to 3 hits. I do not know why.

- The visual reference for your tractor beam is not accurate.

The beam appears to come from all weapon placements that visually show a weapon.

The beam only functions from the weapon placement where it is installed.

This is why you can sometimes bring in asteroids without seeing the sparkles hitting it.

Player-crafted tractor beams may not have a visual placement in your ship, and not show a beam from the true location.

- The tractor beam toggle only turns on the "first" tractor beam in your weapon loadout.

If you tried loading 2 tractor beams in your ship in slots 2 and 3, and slot 2 is a turret, you will not be able to tractor in asteroids with the toggle.

Tractor beams do not function for the pilot when placed in a turret.

Tractor beams will still work if you activate the specific weapon or group, provided it's not a turret.

- There is a current bug that stops the "mother" asteroid from spawning large chunks.

It appears that "mother" asteroids have a preset limit on the number of large asteroids it will produce.

Destroying the "mother" asteroid will cause a new one to spawn, and reset the asteroid chunk count.

- See nextmessage for asteroid material price listings at each station.

It also has the locations of each station.

- Blowing up a small asteroid chunk puts 10 units of that resource in your cargo hold. New!
Using a tractor beam to bring in a small chunk gives 20 units of the resource.

Ok guys, here is the mining outpost data you have been wanting. It has the resource values in each zone, and the locations of the stations.

Ok, I'm relieved now. As long as someone likes it, I'm happy.

Good to know.

I've also noticed when using the tractor beam, don't target where you computer puts the leading green arrow...shoot for the center of the chunks mass. Seems to draw them in better, with less over shot.

I'm still new to piloting but am looking forward to mining. As someone who is annoyed and nervous about all the bugs around (especially since I'm new to piloting), I find this information useful. Thank you. good list.

I found it useful. Never thought to examine a rock for HP. I'm linking it to my guild's site. Thanks.

What happen's if the "Mother" Roid doesn't spawn babies and no "Jr" roids are floating around? Been through 4 systems and all have this problem?

Mother asteroids seem to have a set limit on how many asteroids it can spawn in its lifetime. After it reaches the limit, it won't spawn anymore. You can blow up the mother asteroid to spawn a fresh one, and the count will start again.

I have updated the first post to include this info.

I feel like a complete idiot, but how on earth do you empty your cargo hold exactly? Tried looking on the Ship Management screen, can't see anything there. Tried unloading the hold and trying to do it that way, nothing. Tried talking to the regular space stations, nothing.....
