Hi all, first of all would just like to thank you for taking the time to look at this post.

I have purchased JTL, but i have not installed the game yet, my computer is under maintinence. Im trying to clean it up as much as possible for optimal performance..1 gig RAM 2.4 GHz processor, ati radeon 9600 graphics card...but that's all besides the point. I have no knowledge of what reactors, boosters or whatever any of that stuff does, can anyone give me a casual description of what it does, how to install, etc? I understand that you have to buy blue prints for hte actual ship from a shipwright, and take that to someone in a nearby starport..but where/how do i get upgrades, how do i put them on my ship, what do i do to get the ship results i want? I want to be an imperial pilot...hopefully to fly a TIE Interceptor eventually, and i want a Very fast ship, with good handling...i have heard it is best not to have huge guns, im not sure why though...please fill me in on the following, i appologize. Once again, thank you!

Im a veteran reb pilot but have loads of imp friends who fly but I have found the following over playing time with JTLS

1) Shipwrights produce generally the best reactors, shields and guns

2) Looted stuff i.e off ships you kill give the best capacitors, engines and armour generally

Though the above is not allways true it is generally what I have found while flying.

For strating out you can use looted gear but if you have a good cash supply try to look for the noted shipwright stuff as soon as you can.

As for imp ships im no expert as mostly i blow em up! from people i know they are generally in the low levels low mass high speed so look for components with good stats but low mass. Also vitally important from the imp side USE thedroid/flight computer commands you get as an imp as they make you hit harder and go faster.

Oh regarding what Stuff does

Reactors power the engine, guns and shields

Boosters are like a turbo and give you a temp speed boost

Shields stop enemy fire and recharge

Armour stops enemy fire but dont recharge

To get a ship apart from the one given for free at the start

1) buy a chassie from the shipwright vendor (make sure it is one you can use check the skill boxes)

2) Take it to the chassie dealer and pay him to make it for you

3) go to a starship terminal hit the manage key and load all the above components into it keeping and eye on total ship mass and the energy drain of the components

Hope this helps

Cheers

There's a fairly comprehensive guide stickied at the top of this forum.

Quick basics

reactor - powers your componets

engine - moves your ship

weapon - "blasters"

ordanance - missiles

armor - hull armor

shields - shield that protect you craft

droid interface - controls how fast you can use droid programs

Being an Imp pilot you have to deal with very low mass for your ship. Each component has a weight, and each ship chassis has a max weight that can be put into it. This is why you hear people say take smaller guns, they do this to take bigger shields. Bigger shields will keep you alive longer than a bigger gun.

The Interceptor is a great handling and very fast craft. Engines have a speed modifer, from 30ish to over 100, each chassis also has a speed modifer. To get you craft speed you take the engine speed times 100 then multiply that by your chassis modifer (1.0 for the interceptor) So say you had a 67.5 engine, your interceptor would go 675. If you put that same enigne in a tie bomber (.8 modifer) it would go 540. There is a ship component guide somewhere here on the board that will give you about 1000 times the detail i just did, look for it, it might even be stickied.

You'll want to think about which squad you sign up for, too. The Inquisition isn't too hard, but Black Epsilon and Storm Squadron have some rough missions which might get frustrating. Of course, that also means they'll be the most fun when they're going well, so. As for where to go to sign up for each specific squad, the stickies should have that info.

I started this game only a few months ago and on my first day I went straight into space as a imp in storm squadron without doing any research on the board before I picked which squadron to pick. It did not take long for me to learn that to solo you need good gear, and it is not easy to find people willing to help you out in the missions. So the first thing you need is credits and a lot of it, I must have spent over 2 million credits buying up to tier 7 gear, and this was after going to every SW vendor I could find looking for low price items with great stats. Part of the reason I spent was so much was because I did not know what to buy at first, but at the same time I did find a great vendor that was selling at cost, some of the best crafter gear you can find.

An easy way to make some cash is level up a melee with some scout and watch the trade forum and when you see some crafter asking for some type of meat that sells for 40 plus cpu, go and farm those mobs for a few days and make your few million credits.

The best reactors, weapons and shields for the lower tiers are all crafted made, so go and search every single sw vendor in the game and look for those great bargins. The best tier 2 booster and capacitors I found were items I looted, and with imp ships you want to use these low level gear for a long time since imp ships are very limited on how much weight they can carry.

The only fast imp ship that can carry more then one weapons is the advance, which you get at high levels, so you will always want to get the best weapon and shields into your ship if you are going to solo. Crafters are able to play with the stats on the loot a little bit, so you can find some shields with a lot of shield hp's or shields with a lot of regen.

It took me 20 tries to beat storm squadron tier 3,2,2,2 mission and even then it took a lot of luck. I got throught half of the next mission but I ended up starting over because I realized I needed better gear then what I had to allow me to solo those missions. A wings are a pain in the ass and when you are still using tier two equipment and you are fighting multiply tier 3 and 4 A wings things go wrong very fast. So far I find inquisition so much easier to solo then storm squadron.

Most people say player made engines are the best, and it is true they are the fastest engines you can get, but I do perfer looted engines that are a bit slower but allow you to turn faster which makes it a lot easier to stay on the tail on another ship.

Don't forget that Shipwrights can custom-make you an engine that sacrificed speed for pitch/yaw/roll speed. It all depends on where they spend the experimentation points. Just find a shipwright that does custom work, they can experiment in most areas: speed, pitch/yaw/roll, energy maintenance, mass, etc.

Also be sure to check Shipwrights shops now and then and compare their wares to your looted components. You may find some greatcrafted parts once in a while that you can use, since looted components usually have an unfavorablestat or two that will make it impractical to use. I ran across a few people who had a great weapon or capacitor, but the mass on these looted components was 5x-10x what a comperable crafted component was. If you can't get enough additional components to make it worth RE'ing some of your sweet space loot, it might be worth it to grab a crafted component if it means you can fit more items on your ship.

I have am an Ace on 2 different toons (freelenace and imp) and i have found that a good shipwright can make much better armor than I have found in the game.

I think people under-utilize the freelance reactor overload program. If you're an Imperial or Rebel pilot, I'd really recommend finding yourself a Free Lance pilot and purchase a level 3 reactor overload program and a reactor stabilization program. This allows you to use a much lower lever reactor but still get the needed energy output you need. Most of the people I've met who run decked out x-wings are using a level 2 reactor with an overload 3 on it - let's em carry three weapons.

I lost 14000 mass, all on the freelance reactor overcharge program!

My ship needs somewhere in the neighborhood of 18k energy to fly. My old reactor of 16.5k was nice... until I plugged in a 12k reactor and saw that astromech command in action. Whish I had thought of it sooner! Now I fly with 3 Level 8 guns and front armor, instead of 2 lvl 8, 1 lvl 6 and no front armor. We'll see how much load it really needs when I try this arrangement plus a 4th cannon in the Hvy Krayt.
