Well I've read all the guides, I did the Kash vette for practice in my X-Wing, and last night I tried the master mission solo for the first time.... and got wasted

So far I have done every mission solo (Crimson Phoenix squadron), the only one's I found tough were the first 2 tier 4 missions so I'm guessing I'm a good enough pilot to take down the master vette (I solo'd the Kash vette without too much of a problem without missiles or space bombs - just my trusty blasters) but I'm looking for a couple of bits of advice...

Firstly, I noticed that after taking out the fighter escort (which took me longer than expected as there were 3 or 4 TIE aggressors in the mix which kept attacking me in pairs necessitating a lot of hit and run tactics) the vette was already well on it's way to the exit point and still had the gunboats alongside.

Not a problem I thought, I'll sneak up behind the vette, get the shields and engines then deal with the gunboats later. However, the vette keeps twisting and turning to keep its guns trained on me so I found the only way I could survive was strafing and trying to take out gun 5 and some of the other turrets. At this point I was getting dangerously close to the exit point, so I got cocky trying to take out turrets and died super-quick

The biggest issue I think is that I was in my standard x-wing which is very easy to hit even with engine overload 3. I also think I could have done with some proton torps, but with my current set up I don't have room unless I remove my booster (which has saved my life more times than I care to admit) and even then may reactor isn't powerful enough to cope with that and my 3 weapons even with reactor overload 3 (guess I could try 4).

I thought about taking out one of the blasters, but then I'm worried I won't be able to take out the fighters quick enough to have enough time to deal with the vette...

The other option is to take my a-wing, which has a very fast engine, one big gun and MKIII protons and has no power problems with everything overloaded - I'm sure this will be the better choice for the vette itself but again I am concerened I will not be able to take out the escort quickly enough to have enough time to deal with the vette...

Thoughts? Opinions??

Torpedos are not needed at all. I use my JSF and will try it in an Awing this weekend (neither which have missiles). Here is a short guide.

1) Kill fighters.
2) Take out gun 5 (approach from the front and BELOW vette).
3) Take out the first GB that is in the blind spot of the second GB.
4) Take out the second GB.
5) Take out Shield 1.
6) Take out Shield 2.
7) Take out Engine.
8) Take out guns, reactor and then bridge.

9) Claim your reward.

But would you take an A-Wing over an X-Wing?

I haven't had much problem running the X-wing against the Vette. The extra guns come in handy against the target points on it.

Are you using, 1, 2 or 3 guns. Are they large damage? Are they fast?

Are you using Reactor, Capacitor, Engine, and Weapon overloads? Are you using Capacitor to Shield Shunt 4? You should be saying yes to all these programs.

Gun points only take a few direct hits to kill. Shields may take a couple passes if you are strafing. Obviously, if you are hugging a blind point on the vette to kill them, then no. I'm more into strafing runs with a lot of booster, CTSS, rolling use, personally. The engines take maybe 2 passes. Once that is done, the mission is pretty much over. Take your time clearing the other guns and you'll be fine.

Well, so far I have only SOLOd the vette in my JSF and my Heavy X. I'm just interested to try it in the lightly armed Awing...for fun. I'm sure the Awing will take longer as a result of having only one gun.

Yes, using all those programs. I have 3 medium damage guns (all max between 1500 and 1800 - but they were the best I could find that would fit mass/reactor wise) but they are all sub .320 refire rate and are .5 or better vs shields and armour.

I was trying to strafe last night, but it was taking too long to get anywhere which is when I tried slowing down a bit to get a few more hits in and got toasted

I guess I'll figure it out eventually...

If you are really doing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, you dont need take out the guns in 8. When it comes to taking the reactor, boost out and dive in on it. Your guns will kill the reactor in the first pass and you wont take much if any damage from the top guns. Then just boost on the bottom side, come up from the front and head on pass from just below and take out the bridge. There is no need to mess with all that chaos on top in pass after pass.

Then again, once you do #4, you can park behind it and do all the rest with conc missiles or torps and not even have to move. /shrug.

Never slow down around Capital Ships. Ever. Better to miss a couple times at high speed than to die. Get used to the angles to make your strafing runs. Once you know where to start your runs, you'll have an easier time targetting the components. You do have to hit them pretty dead on, but once you do, they die pretty quick.

By the way, my X-wing is not high end. I use 2 Incom Heavy Blasters (not-RE'd) that are 1800-2400 damage and leave the 3rd one blank. They are not quick, but they are mediocre in speed. I can still get most components in one pass with this set up. You might consider trying to upgrade your guns some, though, overall, I don't think that's your issue. I think practice may be it.

That buckling you're complaining about when the vette starts moving around isn't aimed at you - seems to happen when it's laggy, just wait a moment and it will stop.

I prefer just using my guns, but load out a MK3 proton launcher to be safe. If the vette is having trouble and you're getting close to the exit point, sit back a bit and blow the engines safely. Odds are the gunboats will continue nice and straight after the vette is disabled.

Oh, and clean up your gunboats after/during your vette run, like any good ace pilot. Otherwise you block the spawn for the next guy.

What strength shield are you guys using? Mines 1500 front/back with 12.2 recharge.

Seems to go down a bit quick when I strafe in so that it is touch and go whether it will last or not.

Tried to find better but nothing seems to fit my mass range or has a much lower recharge.

If you can find a good shield that will fit your mass, I wouldn't worry about recharge. That's what cap to shield shunt is for.

1300 f/b player crafted shields atm. I usually take 50% damage to my shields in one vette shot. I generally don't get hit more than 1 time from the front and once from the rear, if I am careless.

Don't fly in a straight line at the vette. Spiral in towards your target and once you can physically see it, line up and gun at it, by the time a 2nd shot gets aimed at you you should be pulling away, spiralling and boosting all the way. If you can take out gun 5, you can make strafe runs on parts from angles that the vette pretty much can't touch you on.

The vette is all about your approach. I like to come in first from the engines (behind the vette) using them to block incoming shots. Duck down and blow turret five, then use that nice big blind spot to work the rest of the ship.
