... for a pilot stuck on this level for the last month.

I have been trying to complete the inquisitor assassination mission every night for the last month. After decaying two X-wings from 1600 to 200, I am looking for any tips you veteran and ace vortex pilots have to givea mostly solo pilot (I have only found one pilotwho was willing toassist me).

First off, some stats would be useful...
What type of weapons/engine/shield loadout you have...
Next, droid programs? Yes/no and levels...

Ok, I think I know what mission this is, I am currently 4,4,4,3 in vortex so I believe I just did this one last night. This is the one where you end up trying to survive 40+ tier 4 Ties all aggroed on you right? I have to say that While I did solo it on the first try, I am a previous ACE (RSF) and a 4,4,4,4 shipwright so I am able to use and RE all the best. I have the reward engine/shield/gun all RE'd and I still had one hell of a time. I fly my Y wing longprobe because of the extra mass it gives.

Anyway, as for tips...try using a LARGE capacitor with cap overload 3 and cap to shield shunt 3 or 4. Mine is 2306 energy at max, and believe me, it helps. Also, the faster your droid program the faster you can do this, but I reccomend only using level 3 shunt, so you have some left to shoot with.

Get a Shipwright to make you some mark III armor with armor upgrades. Using my grinding materials I hit 1100 armor and around 6k mass. These really help too.

As for how to complete the mission, I did A LOT of running. Using booster to stay ahead, then flip and charge them. They scatter and you have a few seconds before they can turn and re-engage. Also, eventually you will make the time limit and you have to kill the inquisitor that is running from you...this is where IFF is your best friend. I saved it so when I recieved that mission update I hit IFF and boostered right out of there. I believe I only managed to kill 6 of them, but I lived.

Hope this helps...

And if my nagging doubt is right and I am talking about the wrong mission, guess you have something fun to look forward too eh?

Thanks for the help Grunholf. And yes, you are correct about the mission...although the 40+ tier 4 TIEs part of the mission is something that I hven't seen yet (the inquisitor and the escort ships always blow me up) here are my ship's stats off th top of my head

Ship: X-wing

Weapons: 2 crafted lvl 7 blasters

Shield: crafted lvl 7 1750/1750 (front/rear)

Engine: looted lvl 863.2/62.1/63.4/73.2 (P/Y/R/T)

Armor: crafted lvl 3 (can't remember the armor stats)

Droid programs: shieldadujstfront/rear heavy, shieldreinforce rear heavy

Hey Kta, this is just my opinion, but the highlighted items above are where your problem is.- your mass is suffering from the level 8 looted engine, which is actually slower than the reward Tier 3 engine. You really need to get the level 6 Tier 3 RE'd down below 10K mass and add that extra gun.

As for the programs, I've now mastered 7 squadrons solo with only the Imp and Neutral programs, but I do have a pre-nerf 15 speed level 1 Droid Interface (500 mass)which helps on the Cap 2 shield shunt turn over. Try to get hold of the level 3 overload chips - Weapon, Engine, Reactor and Capacitor (and either Cap 2 Shield shunt 2 or 3 - depending on the power you Cap puts out). You will not believe the difference these programs can make even with your current set up. Ditch the Reb programs, they can help but by moving energy around your shields you are weakening part of your defense, whilst the Cap 2 Shield program will push energy into both front and back (note cap 2 shield shunt at level 2 pushes 50% of the Cap energy, level 3 pushes 75%) - if you follow this path test it out on some Tier 3's to get used to it and check your Droid Interface timings, as you can cap2shield on the speed of your Droid Interface (so every 15 seconds for one like mine).

I hit a roadblock on this mission too, but I soloed it by doing the craziest thing I could imagine. I flew in medium speed, targetted the leader, called up gun1 specifically, and then dove in. I stuck on him like glue, using the tactics I described in the post linked below. The escort hit me on the rear, and hit me hard, but I still had enough shield to shift it from back to front to handle theturret fire (aggies are the one time the Rebel program can come in handy). Mission legis successful when the leader blows up, so get him, then IFF scramble out of there as fast as you can. I do not think I had my 2500hp reward shield in my Xwing at the time, but it would be an immense help. As above recommended, use your reward engine instead of that Level8 beast, and find a way to squeeze the big shield on your ship. I did this without Engine Overload or Weapon Overload, just the Rebel shield program and guts.

Here is a pretty decent post I wrote about dealing with an Aggressor:

I soloed this mission by flying an a-wing. I think I used a the reward engine, 1700 f/r Mark IV shields, Level 7 blaster, and hitting cap to shield shunt when needed. I did not try to destroy any fighters, just disabled them and moved on.

I also used IFF scramble to get away from the cloud of fighters when the inquisitor got away and I had to move to the second half of the mission.

Then you didn't actually succeed...controlled failure by staying alive isn't a Mission Success

Mission 1

Your basic escort mission. This is when they decide to to not only increase the Tier of the ships you fight, but also the number that spawn at one time. How nice of them. Anyway, the mission has two main parts, wait and escort. I forget the time span for the wait part but you'll have to survive wave after wave of ship until it's done. They won't drop any Aggressors on you so it'll be fine as long as you keep moving. The escort part gives you a break because most of the enemy fighters will concentrate on the freighter, allowing you to pick them off one by one.

...

Just a comment on this. The first part is spawning just next to 1 or 2 Droid Tier5. Anyway you can fail the first part at some point. Wait until the second wave spawns, then run away IFF-scramble or do a micro-hyperspace (in the same region). Eventually a message will come saying that the mission failed, but all is not lost. So you can now proceed with part two, the escort mission.

I have no idea how you survived by doing this in an x-wing. Everytime I have concentrated fire on the agressor, it's escort has made me pay dearly for my singlemindedness. But, I will try stripping my ship of all non-essential stuff and load a big shield and the reward engine. I am going to have to search for some of those Imp and neutral droid programs too.

I didn't expect it to work, but it did. You should have heard my ground crew when I brought the ship back...

The technical aspects of my Aggie strategy came later with much practice, but this mission was my first step away from fearing them. I freely admit I was lucky, but I was also far below my present threshold when it came to quality of gear (about the same place as you). The basic strategic principles are sound, and a few improvements in your kitmake this reasonably soloable with a lot less luck required.

In the "Tie-Bomber" mission, let it go. Then pick up the second half of the mission. You will still need help, but you don't have the waves of Tie's to worry about. In other Tier 4 missions, effective use of disabling (especially engines) can have big payoffs in delaying additional waves. I've solo'ed all the Vortex missions except the Decimator ("Tie Bomber") mission. Also, don't just pick the biggest, baddest gun for your ship. Look a the rate of fire. Some shipwrights can craft a level 7 weapon down to almost .25 rate of fire. This beats your .4 rate of fire, level 8 weapon by a long way. You can generally fit 3 of those on your X-Wing compared to two (or less) level 8's. Good hunting!

You really do need those droid programs: Weapon Overload 3 Engine Overload3 Cap overcharge 3 Cap to shield Shunt 3, and you can most likely get away with Ractor Overload 2. If you have room for all those programs, that would be a big help. IMHO the rebel programs take to long to be effective. Always target the toughest ships first. USe the [ ] keys to target the reactor and disable the ships rather than destroying them. It is much quicker. Then if you have time destroy them at the end. During the mission is no time to worry about getting XP. That's what duty missions are for. Find a helper! Unless you are a complete ahole, surely someone will be willing to fly with you. The problem is, of course, finding somebody willing when you are ready to fly lol. Check the stickies at the top for pilot helpers on your server. Also consider joining a guild that has active flyers. Just about everything in JTL can be soloed with the right amount of experimenting and patience, but it is much more fun to do it with a wingman or squad.

Here's a breakdown of all four missions as best as I can remember them. I did all but the second one solo and without any droid programs besides the rebel ones.

Mission 2

This is where they think it's amusing to have you fight a Tier 5 Aggressor. Not only that, but he's got an escort. Bring friends, preferably more than one. Target weapon 1 on that thing and destroy it. Don't finish off the ship until you've dealt with it's escorts. Once that's finished, you have to help the useless rebel NPCs destroy some fighters. That part's pretty easy.

Mission 3

This has3 parts. Lucky for you, you can fail the second one on purpose. First, you are asked to bring parts to a ship. It's an unshielded TIE. Bring it the parts and then fly off to 2000 meters. TIEs will eventually spawn and start shooting it. Let them kill it. You could try to protect it, but you'll likely fail and this way is easier. Once it's dead, you're asked to go to a waypoint. Along the way, you'll be attacked by another group of TIEs. Fight them until you get the message saying more TIEs are coming. At this point, hit IFF and put everything you have into getting to that waypoint. Once you reach it, dock with the ship and you're done.

Mission 4

This has 2 parts. You can fail the first part, unless you have friends, in which case it's this part you'll want to do. The first part has you fighting a Decimator and its escorts. You have a timer for this part in the form of the NPCs that help you. If they die, the part fails. If you're solo, then fail that part. The second part is a four minute wait with spawning fighters. Spin in a circle and blast things on occasion and you'll be fine. E-Shields also help.

That's the short version of a guide to Vortex Tier 4.
