Thread: Picking a final profession: can't make up my mind

One of these days, ive got to just pick a side and stay there; and for the life of me, i can't make up my mind which side it should be. Obviously im talking rebel or Imperial.

Whenever im one one side, i find myself drawn to the other.

Right now im imperial, and i think its for three primary reasons:

1.)Faction balance. somebody's got be imp, seems most people go rebel.

2.)Most of my PvP experience is in Imperial ships. (that said, PvP acutally only consists of 15% of my total gameplay),

3.)Incharacter reasons, its really easy to pretend your in the Imperial Navy. Probably appeals to the veteran in me. Factionally, imps just got the coolest uniforms. Did i mention i love the Imp command hat? (although, realistically, its kinda silly since 80-90% of my total gameplay is inside a ship, so uniforms shouldn't mean didly squat in this regard)

Now, my biggest turnoffs to being Imperial:

1.) ship selection sucks. Contraversial remark to some folks, but i think thats the reality of it, imperial pilot has a crappy selection. Boil the fat away, it comes down to Tie Advanced,Tie oppressor and thats pretty much, it.(although it should be noted imps have a good ship choice in pvp)

2.) Crappy duty mission selection.

3.) crappy FP grinding (as compared to reb pilot)

So, given that, may as well look at the other side of the fence.

My biggest attractions to rebel pilot:

1.) Awesome ship selection, and lots of mass to play with. (and yes, i like the nova better then the deci, go figure)

2.) awesome mission selection

3.) awesome FP grinding

4.) I dunno about everyone else, but *I* happen to like the ace helmet

Biggest turnoffs:

1.) Just doesnt seem incharacter enough to me. Sucky uniforms, no uniformity at all really. Doesnt really feel like your in a factional navy to me. I want Esprit de corp and uniformty in a flying unit, and rebel pilot just seems to lack any possiblity of it.

2.) only real harcore PvP contender is the A wing (that said ive always had a desire to perfect using an Xwing in PvP)

Boil the fat away, the biggest hangup for me is factional balance. Typically a majority of the better pilots go rebel, and in the scale of things, leans towards tings being a one sided struggle in space, and that means a stale game.

Maybe my biggest worry is feeling like a bandwagoneer by going rebel pilot. (not saying that existing rebel pilots are), Theres this odd urge that i should stick and follow through on being imperial, even though im not completely happy with it, and might even be happier as a rebel. *shrug*

But at some point, im gonna have to pick a side i think.

Tough desicion...Considering I haven't done Rebel pilot past 1000, I can't really say what I like more. I do like the Ace helm more than the Freelancer one or Imperial one. The Imp one looks too much like bone armor IMO LOL.

I think the main reason most people go Rebel is because they are the good guys.

Another reason to the educated gamer could be that making Ace in Rebel ships is easier.

I completely hear you about being easier to RP as an Imp. RPing as a Rebel is very tough because you have to be very covert about your affiliation. I mean if Rebs actually did go around theed (in the REAL SW) in armor with the Reb Insignia on it they would be dead in a heartbeat. RPing as an Imp on the other hand is VERY easy.

One could make a comparison to choosing the light side or dark side here

Quicker, easier, more seductive.

As a pilot however, I would prefer Rebel for three reasons.

1. /vrepair

2. IFF Scramble

3. In-flight reload

(Not to mention ships)

The only thing about being an Imp Pilot that I like (aside from the snappy uniform) is Bomber Strike, and sure its very useful, and almost like a crutch for taking on Vettes or gunboats.

Sure rebels are supposed to be more defensive than the offensive Imps, but given that they have more ships to choose from, and easier mass restrictions to get past...I think its actually the opposite, which doesn't really fit with continuity (like that matters anymore though).

Joining the other side so that there will be someone to fight is actually a very responsible decision. Most players would want to join the winning side instead of having to work harder on the losing side. Sure that doesn't really extend into space PvP atm, but the principle is still there in its own separate realm. You could always go CorSec and Neutral on the ground and be able to fight for either side...Vaksai isn't that bad...and the pre-ROTW ships aren't too terrible either. RL experience is more helpful than IG components orships, though of course they help.

But after I'm done in my quest to master all 9 squadrons I'm going to stay with Rebel. Not only because my character is named after a rebel, and hes RPing as one, but I like flying Rebel ships more than Imperial or Freelance ones. But /vrepair can be a lifesaver when you get in over your head and need to limp away to DS to repair. Sure if you know what you're doing you don't need it, but being able to give your disabled friend a jumpstart (which will hopefully get his reactor and engines going and not just his DI) is something that no other profession has. That coupled with cheap ordnance and countermeasures is just alot to turn down with the other professions.

*cough*

Besides the Rebel Navy is superior to the Empire, sure they're operating on different levels of battle, but at the end of the day the Rebels won at Endor and eventually the GCW.

But I really respect you for flying as an Imp just so it won't be one-sided. But if you really can't stand flying as an Imp you might want to consider Freelance or maybe Rebel. Theres a certain justice in really good pilots going neutral and actually being paid by one side or the other to fight for them. Sure its a limited market, but hiring yourself out as a Merc is a pure, unadulterated way of saying as an arrogant pilot "Yeah, I'm that good, try me." And being able to say that almost makes it worth it even if nothing comes of it.

(I like the RebAce Helmet too, though the all black novice TIE Uniform I like more)

It's been a darned hard decision for me, too. I'm still not sure I ever really made up my mind. I'm pretty sure, though, that there are people on Valcyn that don't like it when I talk like that (my CO in Valcyn's Rebel Flight Wing, for example).

If Valcyn's Imperials showed another glimmer of hope for getting organized, I'd probably have to put some serious thought into defecting. As is, there has been a lack of consistent central leadership as well as some resistance among Imperial PAs to thrown any weight at all behind space operations. There are Rebel PAs, on the other hand, that *have* done so, and continue to make Valcyn's Rebel space chat channel a thriving place.

It's just been so convenient to be a Rebel - not just the ships, but the ability to find other people to do stuff with - that I feel like I'd be giving up a lot by making a decision to leave them.

I can't do anything about the ship selection (I'm also a big A-Wing and X-Wing fan), nor the Duty selection, nor the FP situation of Imperial Pilots. Their salvation exists not in the game mechanics, but in the organization and communication that so often exists within Imperial ground forces.

Rebels might be the good guys, but the Imperials are the disciplined troops, trained well, and led into battle as an army, not a ragtag bunch of terrorists. Getting that philosophy to follow through into space is a hell of a challenge.

Look at the x-wing. You just can't say no!

You're basically sat in a seat with four engines around you, with two guns to each side. It gives you a right 'powerhouse' feeling.

TIEs have solar panels, that just looks silly.

Dont be irresponsible - sign up for the Imperial Navy. The Emperor wants YOU! The Empire needs you now more than ever. After the setback at the Battle of Yavin, the Empire has begun a great initiative to drive the rebels out once and for all. Do you want to be a criminal? Betray the source of all of your prosperity? No, you arent a criminal are you? *shakes head no* You are a patriot and proud supporter of the Emperor. Your stints with the rebels were just to learn their evil ways right? That is right...

In fact, given your history... we will make you the Captain of an Imperial Assault Ship!

Just sign here (hands Rapax his Commisioning paperwork) and have the Supply Sgt provide you with a new uniform. I will see you at the Starport.

You freak !

I think you should decide which you'd be happier as yourself before worrying about faction balance or any band wagon effect on your server.

My views (for what they are worth) of your imp advantages

1) If your going to be imperial be one because that's what you want to be and enjoy not because somebody has to be one.

2) That should carry over to an a wing well but seriosuly I wouldn't consider that too much, if you've got pvp experiance it will help with flying any ship. You'll know what was tactics rebel pilots used againts you that worked well at least.

3) No suggestions for RP, with the way so many roleplayers on starsider are slavers, slaves or even seedier I just avoid it all.

Imp disadvantages

1) I love my rebel ships but really how many are that effective either ? Sticking to non RotW ships x wing's with the right lay out are great ships, the a wing is great for pvp but the y wing is much the same as the tie bomber (I imagine haven't been animp pilot) and it takes a good pilot to make theb wigna good ship.

2) Not much I can say about those.

3) Do you need to be able to grind alot of faction or is this more of a nice bonus but not really that important ?

I went Rebel mainly because

1.I'm a shameless fictional fanboy (although I hate Jedi and yeh Wedge was a cool 'rolemodel' for a character but I think I just liked the helpless Dunkirk spirit of the Rebels.)
2.I think X-wings and A-wings are the prettiest ships in the game. If you ever got a Feng Shui master to design a starship..it'd be an A-wing (or possibly a Viper mk II from Battlestar Galactica the new series, however mentioning that show here may get me decaptitated )

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the vaksai is the vipers distant cousin

Do you put this much thought into whether you should join the red team or the blue team in any other CTF/team-based game ?
