I almost always fly with the camera zoomed all the way out. Sometimes it's nice to zoom into 1st person perspective when I'm just traveling to feel more realistic, but the cockpit seems to visually restrictive during fights. I don't ever use any of the change in camera angle commands either. However, I've just started to fly and I really don't know very much about the finer points of game mechanics for space.
What camera perspectives does everyone else use, and in what situations?

Turn the cockpit off and try it in 1st person. Way better than 3rd person in my opinion.

I love it in first person with the cockpit on. Makes it feel like I'm actually in there.

I do as well, but some ships are to restrictive in their field of view for combat. The Bel-22 is a perfect example.

Under Ctrl-O...Misc...one of the last options.

First person, cockpit frame off. I use to fly with it on but now as I use the Bellbullab more offten then not, it's to bothersome to turn it off and on all the time.

Third person, because I am able to have more peripheral vision. The only ship thats profile has seemed to hinder me is the KSE. The Belbullab flies fine.

The Bel-22's issue is flying with the cockpit on in 1st person. As for peripheral vision, even in first person...you can use Num-Lock to always have an eye on the target.

I use1st person with the cockpit frame turned off....its (as others have said) too restrictive. I fly in 3rd person when I am going from one WP to another between missions. When I play 1st person I have a better sense of whats going on around me. I can judge speeds better. Itsmore difficult to judge speeds in the distance when in 3rd person in relation to your ship. This applies in real life as well.
Anyway I have actual flying experience in RL and being in the cockpit feel more natural. Give it a shot....if it seems difficult or disorienting then stick to it. I bet you find it much more efficient.

i used to do first person cockpit off until i went to solo the SD and vette. its a LOT easier to see where lasers are comming from when you're doing strafing runs or whatever in third person.

I always fly in 3rd person, with the camera elasticity tweaked a bit. Makes it feel like you're playing Rogue Squadron
