Thread: Current trends in space combat

I'm curious what the current trends out there are for space PvP, so I thought this might make for an interesting discussion.

I remember sometime back someone (Ducimus?) posted a thread detailing how level 6 engines seemed to have become obsolete as more players moved to level 8 REs. Now it seems most of my opponents are moving to crafted engines for their high speed, and my level six still out manuevers them in close combat, at least on Bloodfin and Ahazi. Starstrider seems to be the home of the level 8 RE.

I'm noticing more use of crafted quickfires than looted REs. Not something I personally agree with for PvP but it's good to see the general player base finally looking at DPS as it relates to refire rate.

Most players than ever seem to be shirking away from the Actis/B-22 type ships. Serious PvPers are coming at me in classic ships or Heavy X's, which seems to be the rebel ship of choice.

I still see lots of people without any armor at all. Lots of folks without countermeasures, which I'll never understand.

So whatcha all seein' out there in the great black?

I see the trend slowly moving away from all out firepower. I'm not sure what to, but for me at least its just a hip thing, I like my ships to have that "speed" feel, i.e. my INterceptor has a gun that has a refire of .251 now the damage is onl like max i think 2400 but still. I also feel that people are moving away from smaller ships. Again I'm not sure why but I feel that it is becasue we are moving back into PvE. I know it sounds strange but think of it as a pendulem, one side is PvP and the other is PvE, i feel like we are coming back into PvE. Justmy insights, all I can offer.

Well, I know as far as A-wings go, I was one of the first to delve into lvl 8 engine territory along with keeping the ship punchy but I have noticed the trend. I personally feel and as I have posted before that ROTW has not only upset the game balance, but also caused the game to evolve somewhat. Whereas pre-rotw lvl 6 engines were all the rage, post rotw it is now lvl 8 engines. This I assume is due to the new ships with greater mass and those who try to fit larger engines in the lower mass pre-ROTW starfighters do so because they have to...in order to keep up with technology so to speak. I know I did. My view was this:

If the JSF (for example) has greater mass and r,p,y acceleration than my A-wing, I need to be aiming to outrun it and out turning them or at least matching them in turns. Lvl 8 engines were the key to this and with the introduction of the QID, it was made possible.

Other trends I've noticed which seem to have just naturally occurred in the case of the A-wing is the lvl 7 Ionic pulse weapon, Mk II Image Recs/Mk III Proton Torpedo combination which I believe is the most common set up these days with a lvl 8 engine and either a MkIV shield or a re'd Protecto net. Very few people I know still use the lvl 6 pre-nerf engine, lvl 8 weapon, mkIV shield set up and currently, I only know myself who has a lvl 8 weapon, engine and protecto net in an A-wing (though I'm sure someone else has too).

As for other ships, I know Heavy X-wings tend to have lvl 10 engines as standard, or at least everyone I know is striving for a lvl 10 engine in their X-wing because you can still get a lvl 10 engine in that ship along with three re'd lvl 8 blasters and reward shield to make a complete killing machine.

As for JSFs, it is ironic since I know very few people who have them/have had them set up well at all. I know my RS friends who flew Actises had them set up well, but the majority which I fly against are using crafted engines.

I'm sorry if anyone disagrees with me but personally, I think crafted engines in pvp are suicide. I am yet to be outmanouvered by someone with a crafted engine. The only time a ship with a crafted engine got me was when I was missiled during an even and my chaff failed. Y,P,R is more important in my oppinion, but I'm just saying that from experience.

What? No E3 in there?

Crap. I suppose I should start PvPing then. Not enough people talking about using this

J/K!!!!

Joking aside, I get people asking all the time for stutterfire .25 refire dual andtri lvl 9 and dual and tri lvl 7, crafted lvl 9 engines experimented into 70+ YP and the rest into speed, lvl 7 crafted shields, minimal armor and specific reactor energy generation.

Some, I know, have RE projects in the works. (I ask ) Others don't have a clue about RE'ing. (To which I direct them to certain threads in here)

For pilots in the know, Valcyn is definitely at the "L8 engines are mandatory" stage, and people are beginning to discover the joys of the Protecto-Net. Not sure if weapon choice is so homogenous; I see lots of L8s, but also L7s and L10s, depending on the mass of the ship.

Quite a few pilots are still using low YPR L8s or crafted Mark IV engines. Not sure if that's through ignorance, or because they don't devote100%of their game time to space like we do Easy meat, really.

In my opinion, the Quantum Ion Drive allowed people to make the jump into L8 teritorry. After the original nerfs, the fastest L8 engine was 88. Since ROTW, the QID allowed people to have L8 engines faster than the pre-nerf T3 reward engine. Now that I finally have a pre-nerf, my newly outfitted awing is obsolete before I opened the box. As time moves on, the sheir volume of RE-worthy goods accumulates, raising the stakes.

Very academic analogy there. 10 out of 10 for choice of words.

Sure, paste the following in your sig.

As for trends, I'd love to outfit a Ywing LP for PvP; I just lack the necessary volume of RE equipment.

I see the trends moving towards faster and more maneuverable ships all time time. Level 6s in PvP are almost completely dead, with a few exceptional holdouts. Level 8s seem to be the entry-level engine nowadays, and more and more people seem to be trying to cram level 10s onto A-wings/TIE Advanced/X-wings. The pace of combat keeps spiralling upwards, and I don't know how much longer my reflexes can keep up.

Farstar seems to have nothing but Actis' with absolutely terrible loadouts (Read: Crafted engines experimented into speed, crafted guns with a high refire).
