Thread: I actually LOVE pikeman they way it is!
Actually a lot of us primarily PvE at this point since were mostly just frustrating in PvP, and at the high end of the game our wonderful Block defense pretty much gimps us against NPCs and high level mobs.
But when your dots are the only thing actually damaging a person in PvP it is somewhat pathetic, but that doesn't stop me from PvPing though
Yep, and thats a huge problem - in order to be marginally viable in PvP we depend on rare and ultra-rare drops to do so.
I PvP still at times, but with the ascendance of Fencers its getting harder and harder to be motivated.
And its even more depressing going to the corvette and needing to switch to Swordsman to increase my survivability dramatically due to Counterattack being vastly (50%!
) better...
However, our only advantage in PvE is against medium-level NPCs who don't kite. That's the one thing we do well, dizzy and knockdown mid-level or weak NPCs who are standing next to each other. Fighting nightsisters is currently relatively easy for everyone, but that's because they're broken. Nevertheless, taking on a spellweaver or protector as a pikeman is vastly more difficult than as a TKA or swordsman (fencers are disadvantaged by their lack of decent AP). We're reasonably well suited to take out the NPCs on Lok or the assorted cavemen on Dantooine, not nightsisters.
Against a single protector, a swordsman will kill it MUCH faster than a pikeman. For that matter, a 0/4/0/0 swordsman will probably kill it at least as fast a master pikeman. Not to mention that I've watched some master sworsdmen solo (forceless) elders without any apparent difficulty, which we of course cannot do period. Even if we could damage them though, it'd be a difficult fight to live through with our horrible defenses. TKAs, even with mere AP1, dish out so much damage so fast that they easily outdo us against single targets as well, and can tank like nobody's business. Fencers can't compare to our damage, but their defenses at least allow them to live long enough to win a fight.
Against multiple targets, we may be a little better off than TKAs, but swordsmen easily outdo us once again. Being able to area stun, dizzy, and kd is nice, but high-end mobs have high resists against all of those and we simply can't dish out damage anywhere near as much as swordsmen. This would be alright if we could at least tank better than them, but we can't even come close.
We're a competent class once we hit master, and yes we can do well for ourselves with some smarts. We're just way behind everyone else, be it PvP or PvE. It's just more apparent in PvP because you're directly competing with others, not alongside them.
Couldn't agree more about the DoT lances though. They should never be a replacement for a real fix.
Many a time I've had people say how bad pikeman is (mostly from swordmen), in all aspects. They go silent pretty quick when they don't have rights to loot, if you get my drift.
For PvP our defences are too low, that is true. We aren't that bad though. Unbuffed, getting first strike we can take down even those master fencers (KD, Dizzy, Intimidate, PH3 for the record). Add some more defence and maybe we'd survive if they hit first.

Always getting yelled at in there, not that I do anything than take down things attacking me.
You love the fact that the mob that drops the energy lance schematic and loot components can't be damaged by you?
You love the fact that HAM costs are so high you have to be buffed 24/7 just to play?
You love the fact that you need nearly +100 polearm accuracy to land more than 2 hits in a row with your LVA?(keep in mind it was changed from -50 to -30 because gunman went on a warpath)
You love the fact your toughness is so low and the fact that what we suspect is a simple typo that has existed since launch prohibits our tanking ability even when buffed?
You love the fact that most of the high end mobs in the game (where we should shine) have high kinetic resistances and high electricity resistances thereby affecting our ability to participate in group hunts to hunt those mobs?
You love the fact that you have to suffer through artisan grind quality weapons until you get to the basic lance cert and then you have to basically use that weapon until you get support 2 because the accuracy mods on the VL and LVA make them unusable until that point and it's a slow AP0 weapon?
These are PvE concerns by the way.
I could go on.
