I'm a devout Pikeman. I love the profession.I took up my template of Master Pikeman andTeras Kasibecause I wanted to be the tank whenever I went group hunting.
The current belief nowadays among many people on my server is that in order tofight endgame battlesyouNEEDJedi, especially Master Defenders. So when my guild wanted to fight Necrosis, I jumped on the chance to find out if I would be able to tank Necrosis or not. Unfortunately, a Master Defender was brought as a precautionary measure (a real life friend).
Our party consisted of the following-
Master Doctor/Weaponsmith
Master Smuggler/Pistoleer
Master Commando/Bounty Hunter
(Jedi) Half Finished Template
(Jedi) Master Powers/Master Saber
(Jedi) Master Saber/Master Defender
(Me!) Master Pikeman/Teras Kasi
How we did it -
Smuggler rooted both Necrosis and the first guard. We went after the second guard and dropped him quick. Then we finished off the remaining guard.
Before we hit Necrosis, I sent a quick tell to my Jedi Master Defender buddy saying "let me tank him." He understood.
The ranged fighters and the Powers Jedi took out the power cell while I rumbled with NK.
In order to hold hate, I used Melee Strike and Impale. Whenever I lost hate, I used Improved Taunt (TK skill). I also tried extra hard to make sure I held the hate to make sure I was the one getting hit instead of the Jedi. Everyone else did an average of 200-450 damage but I was in the range of 500-800.
To maintain the action needed to keep using these attacks, I drank Vasarian Brandy and the Doc buffed my action.
To tank, I kept my stomach empty so I could have lots of room to eat synthsteak. Mitigation food is a must-have for any tank! Without it, I was getting hit for 800-1000, but with it I was hit for a more managable 425 damage that my Doc was able to cure easy. I also used Warcry to slow down NK's combat speed. And finally, the Doc kept Bacta Infusion on me. I was also wearing Clone Armor (I forgot to bring other armor, doh!)
Aside from that, everyone played their part. The Smuggler made sure to keep Overwhelming Shot on NK, making it easier for the rest of us to land status attacks. We kept NK stuck with armor break, blinded, dizzy, stunned andreckless shot (defense debuff). The Jedis (including the defender)just used their melee attacks. The ranged fightersused their ranged attacks. The Doc concentrated 100% on keeping me healed. Everyone made sure to use various moves to conserve actionand left the high damage attacks to me. No one wanted to risk doing too much damage and getting NK on them.
I would also like to note that NONE of the Jedi usedANY force heals. All the healing came from the Doc.
Our loot included the Belbullab ship deed, electric cyber arm and the Proton Rifle. We had only two deaths when NK did an area attack.
I am very proud of myself. This battle proved that NK can be beaten without Jedi.Itproves that to win, you don'tneed Jedi, youneed the right ROLES. You need people who can work together and know their role. And while we did bring three Jedi, they were just using melee attacks. Any other damage dealing non-Jedi could have filled that role.
So next time you plan to hit Necrosis, make sure you've got dedicated healers, damage dealers, a crowd control and a good tank who knows how to hold hate and makes good use of mitigation foods.
Other things I can tank include nightsister elders, giant dune kimos and ancient krayts. I am also themain tank at the Avatar Platform and cantank up to four lvl 84 npcs there usingspin attack and area knockdown to hold hate.So remember guys, you don't need to be Jedi to be good. Study everything including how to do enough damage to hold hate and how to minimize the damage you take. If I can do it, you can do it.
The only place I haven't tried yet is the Deathwatch Bunker. I hear it's REALLY hard now but I'll see if there's a way through that place as well. And of course I can't tank the SBD's at the Corvette but those are just stupid hard.

Yep, anything in the game is possible without a Master Defender (perhaps excluding DWB)
A friend of mine (TKM/Swords) tanked necrosis, with just a jedi (not defender, or complete template) healing him. I was there at the same time (pikeman/healer) but I died as it hit me for 2.2k then 500 before I could heal (i think COB wore off too).
Myself and an incomplete Jedi (with no defender) blew up the avatar together and killed the giant gaping spider (Kiin Dray) in the Nightspider Cave.
Whoever thought that M-defender was needed for "all end-game content" is way wrong ![]()

Sound like a lot of excitement. Question. Pike/TKA and? You still have skill points, where are they?

Meh. I've killed Necrosis repeatedly with just a jedi (not a master defender) and myself. No healers and no ranged professions (unless you count jedi saber throw).
Strategy beats any template.

***** for party dynamics, and realizing that there are other classes ingame than MLS/MDef/4xxxHealer Jedi

my group of 5 people(non jedi) took NK down
we had 2 range and 3 melee...
the 3 of us took turns tanking when ever he was out of Root(which was fairly ever. and he was rooted we were right next to him any way taking him down... We had 0 deaths and walked away with 4 items. one cyborg arm a ship, a crystal, and a pike...
it was fun and doable without jedi... this guy imo was overexagerated... Btw did i mention we had 0 doc heals... we only used stim packs. was easy.

---I posted this on the Pikeman forum but I feel it should go here to. It concerns all non-Jedi melee tanks.---

Glad to hear someone actually had the balls to try something most people aren't willing to risk. Also good to hear that there is something another class can do as well as Jedi.

well i was reading this and that's good and great that you tanked necrosis but the fact of the matter is, it's a waist of time and money to even bother tanking him. And alternitively speaking you tanked him as a pikeman not a tka. I've taken out necrosis with a party of as little as three. None of which were jedi or even patial jedi.
We had a MBH/MSMUG with stopping shot tree of pistoleer, a pistoleer/rifleman with novice smuggler, and me a tkm/doc with advanced armor breakand crit strike.
Pull the cronies with bots, take em out one at a time, easily tanked by any tkm. take out the power cells and the machine.
Concussion, Stopping shot, KD, Armorbreak, Snare, Kite repeat. if he goes after someone with lesser defenses you taunt and burst run the other way till he gets hit with another root. When it's all said and done it's much quicker and effective that way. no waiting for jedis to meditate for 8 hours to fill up their 8k force bar, quick easy, efficient.
Even if you can tank necrosis TKMs are still not the tanks they should be. And as far as i've seen on test center the new animations are nothing more than a nerf. Seems now if you attack while an animation is running it blanks out your queued up attack as it would if you were attacking an invalid target. So are attack speed is now gonna be low enough that we can say good byeto holding any kind of agro.

I just happened to be using a pike duing the fight but I used TK skills to tank with (Improved Taunt, Improved Center of Being). But next time around I can use Knuckles of the Katarn.
Keep in mind Root and possibly Snare are meant to break upon damage, the code that was put in just isn't working right. I went to Fanfest and heard this myself. When that piece of code is fixed, you're going to need a tank to keep Necrosis off you. This also applies to all those melees who have been getting killed by Root/Snare in PvP.
What my guild did on this NK hunt is just us adapting early to the expected changes. We used root as intended - to keep NK out of the fight while we took out his guards.
These moves are meant to keep your target out of a fight until you can handle the other threats in the area first. They are NOT meant to make your target a sitting duck to stand there and be killed. I suggest those who rely on kiting should prepare for changes.
