Thread: It's been asked before! Is pikeman better than swordsman?

I have heard many ex-swordsman who are now currently pikemen tell me that pikeman is way better than swordsman and that they would never go back. Both professions get an ap2 weapon so I'm trying to decide what I should go for.

imo pikeman is better in most aspects except that we dont got blast dmg.
Due the amounts of looting nightsisters etc there is usually quite easy to get a +700 dmg LVA if you know where to look and who to ask etc. and now with the extra melee speed in the village you dont have to spend insane amounts on tapes either to get decent speed.
Ive been swordsman and i havent regret the change in professions. might just get swordsman back for the blast dmg tho

Pikeman is not necessarily a stronger class. It's just a hell of a lot more fun than swordsman.

As a swordsman, I have been outdamaged by a pikeman pretty severely on many occasions. Obviously the guy was well equipped, but it's still embarrasing. I have strongly considered switching to pike, but I don't feel like grinding and I like swordsman weapons better for PvE. Perhaps if I feel bored enough to do it sometime in the future, I will switch.

Maybe I'll do both. Could use pikeman for pvp and swordsman for pve.

If you did both I'd suggest Master Swordsman/Pike 4004/Doc 4030
Then get +25 Speed for both and Accuracy if you want(Not a big deal though if using stun and intim)
Swords = Damage
Pike for the DoT's
And the ability to cure states and DoT's

I used to be a Master Swordsman and now I am a Master Pikeman. I will never go back.

I've been both Master Swords and Master Pike at one time or another. If you are doing just one combat profession with no stacking from another profession to help with defense, or dodge/counter/block, Swordsman is the better profession. You will have better damage output on average, and better ability to take a hit. With the poor defenses in both classes, you ARE going to take hits. For now, counter attack is also much better than block. You can speed cap with a curved sword with little effort as a swordsman (speed slice) and have all the medium kinetic AP fun you like. Unless the Pikeman is equiped with a looted pike and/or speed enhancements of some sort, the swordsman is going to get in more damage PVE. Again in PVP, the swordsman is more useful, if we are talking about two combatants using zero loot. I'm in pikes because ultimately, pikes can handle most things well, and they just look so darned cool. 8^

Short answer = NO
Few reasons.
1. For a pikeman to have chance at outdamaging a scythe we need roughly another +18 speed, where as a swordsman is at the cap with a scythe at master.
2. Swordsman weapons are almost all AP2. LVA is our only one.
3. Blast damage and AP2. With speed attachments and an acklay hammer a swordsman is much stronger.
4. Defenses. Swordsman get similar state defenses, more toughness and counterattack (alot better than block)
5. Swordsman weapons are best crafted, our best weapons are looted. Crafted weapons are much easier to come by, and are alot cheaper. Also looted weapons dont last as long.
I out damage swordsman but I have a 1K LVA and +21 speed and accuracy tapes. Although, if I came accross a capped swordsman with an acklay hammer of similar stats to my pike i would be outdamaged.

the only reason i'm keeping swordsman is for the blast damage. works well against nightsister elders and such. i use my pike for most everything else though. i was lucky enough to get a +15 polearm speed tape, so i'm capped on that. not so lucky with 2h speed mods. now all i need is accuracy, and i'll be all set.
but is one better than the other? not too sure. my dps is better with the pike for the sole reason that i'm capped on speed. and i have a nice acklay hammer and some nice looted pikes.

as a speed capped pikeman I outdmg pretty much any melee proff on mobs that dont have 100% kin resist. elders is the only thing swordsman seems to outdmg me at (for obvious reasons). but when i get my hands on a NSEL ill give them a run for there money
*plans on stealing one from those rich people who buy them just to hang on walls. what a waste*
