Well I did master musician once and dropped it, now I am redoing it again.
I find that this profession is like a animated chat room, which is why I am coming back to the profession.
But I have noticed some things I dont like.
While in Theed Cantina in a group I notice theres a afk dancer/musician who is running a total buffing script, not in a house but in a public cantina, well in our group there are 4-5 core players and we are not afk and we are not holotaining. Now our XP has dropped significantly and when we master which will be saturday for me we planned on forming a seperate group with no afkers and live music.
But then you have afkers who are totally tearing down the purpose of entertaining and interacting. Musicians/dancers are important to the GCW and over all play expeirence, without us they cannot heal there minds, and we all know that after holo grinding ends, there will be far fewer of us around.
What I suggest to pretty much stop this afk buff nonsense is simple
Create a button at novice level called "Enhance Mind" once you use that command a dialog box pops up sorta like an ID, and it says something about preparing to enhance mind of player XX time for completetion XX:XX and then the player enters price of service and musician has to enter a random confirmation code to proceed. this helps expediate our payment for services like an ID and also prevents anyone from being afk while providing the most valuable service to the community.

Genius. Pure Genius. Relatively simple and oh so perfect. *crosses fingers* This idea needs some serious consideration.

How about this.
After agreeing on a price for service and entering the confirmation code,a timer would start when the musician/dancer starts performing. This would be less of a minute:second type timer, but just acertain number. The size of this numberwould be dependent on performerskill level, the song or dance used, the type and quality of instrument (perhaps clothing could affect this for dancers?), This number could be balanced to set the average length to apply a buffto be a certain time, 5 minutes or whatever the devs deem appropriate. It would be reduced as the entertainer performed flourishes and lighting effects.Upon the timer reaching 0, the performerends his song/dance, the customer's buff is applied, and the payment is transferred.
Results?
1. Impossible to AFK buffdue to the 'confirmation code' and image designer-like interface without command line equivalents.
2. Performer and customer both see the timer and know if/when the buff is applied.
3. Mechanically useless instrument quality and lighting effects gain relevance.
4. Entertainer has the ability to make sure they are paid appropriately for their service.
I think some form of this system would be the best solution to both our buffing and buffbotting problems.

I'm cautiously supportive of these ideas, but I'd hate to start to feel that performing is like filling out cells in a spreadsheet. I also worry that the botters will find ways to defeat the ID-style interface, though apparently they haven't yet. My preferencewould be to eliminate therecursive macro, but I recognize that that's not likely to happen.

Personally, I'd welcome a little morevariedwork to do while I'm performing. Right now I just plug in my macro and then just wait for customers to come in or for an interesting subject of conversation to come up in the group. A bit of spreadsheet filling-in would be a welcome addition for me. At least it would make a change from the plug-in andwait that we currently have. To me, the 'doing away with therecursive macro' solution is a worse solution, since the only change would be that I'd be selecting an F1 - F12 key every few minutes. A pop up box is much more interesting, especially if itcould be made witha few options in itsimilar tothe way theID interface works.

I agree. This is one of the best ideas I've seen so far. There are a whole load of threads about buff bots, afk musicians ect. And I've been an entertainer / musician since I started the game a year ago.
It was my starting profession and I worked my way up to master musician without even using any macros, never mind going AFK.
Anyway ... back to the idea. Most ideas revolve around giving people more xp, but this one seems more interesting for the master. I have no interest in xp being a master, and it would make the whole buff process both interesting and clear for both sides. Once the 'contract' had been agreed with both sides (eg an agreed fee, possibly even a drop down box where the customer could request a song, etc) you could play the song and get automatically tipped the agreed fee upon completing the buff.
This way the interaction between the two parties is increased and both are safe in the knowledge that they will get payed / recieve the buff.
Great stuff.

The thing is, some live entertainers like myself do use the recursive macro feature, as we're often chatting to patrons or explaining stuff to new players, so having a performance macro running is pretty vital, otherwise you end up forgetting to flourish...

I like the idea. I think it would be even better if the timer was actually more of a meter that fills up and shows the duration and maybe the quality the customer can expect.
Something Like:
{[][][][][][][][][][][]======================} +180% to stats
| | | | | |
15 306090120 180
Buff Duration Time (min)
This buff meter of course could be viewable by both the entertainer and the reciever of the buff.

I like the meter idea. That's way better than a number.
We've already got timer meters in the game (incap timer) so I don't think it would be too hard to change things around for a buff meter.

I like the meter idea too. And I'm impressed that Amy created such a nice facsimile on this Lithium board.
