I'm personally a bit torn on which I would choose if I had to pick only one. I guess that I've gotten used to the targetting thing, and the only time it really bugs me is when I want to use /ventriloquism, which you can't target by just supplying a name (you actually have to have the target person targetted). And sharing nalargons is really cool, even if it doesn't happen all that often. I think I personally would choose being able to share.
Of course, it's WAY more preferable if both can happen.
And this all is just my opinion as a player, not a summary as a corr.
You can do ventriloquism while playing the narlagon and not stop, but you have to time it right. I wish I could demo it for you, honey, but I toasted my mastery in music when the FU hit. It's a matter of angling camera view so that you have your cursor over the target person but can click back on the narlagon really fast, have /vent queued up in chat, wait for the end of a 10s tick, click hit Enter click back on the narlagon really fast!So I guess that means sharing might have a leg up. Not from me, but I hate that stupid thing anyway, and don't miss being able to play it at all. I do miss the Ommni, though. But not enough to waste that many skill points on it.Message Edited by Echinacea on 08-10-2005 06:15 PM
Oh, I know how to do it with quick timing and such, and there are times when I use that to emote to people with annoying names, but it's still a hassle and thus bugs me
So far the only change has been that if you aren't set as the owner,
then the instrument is not moved to you (and you aren't moved to it).
This change wasn't made to the static instruments (ones placed in NPC
cantinas, etc.) so those still won't move, but you'll still be able to
use them.
When you drop an instrument in a house and play it, you aren't set as
the instrument owner, so those will not move (nor move you to them),
even if you are the real owner. I think that's appropriate,
assuming you put the thing where you wanted it to be in the first
place, sort of an improvement, even.
Sounds like we need to find a way to remove the targeting requirement without disabling the ability to share the instrument. That's a little more involved, so can't make any promises there.

Why can't you drop two nalargons on top of each other and have all the musicians "sharing" the nalargon use their own? This would make it "easy" to not force you to target the instrument and still allow you to "share" it. But, admittedly, I don't really know anything much about this issue.

I never even knew non musicians could move them. I used to hit up player cantina after player cantina and play their nalargons or omnis. I always made sure to move them so that the owner would know they had been played and their cantina used....I guess I didnt realize some people dont like this.
Well, see it from their point of view - they spend hours decorating their cantina, putting everything in exactly the place they want it to have (which takes some fiddling around), and then somebody who's not on the admin list can come and move some of their stuff (those two instruments) all over the place. Happened in my cantina once - and I have built a few microphones on stage out of various weapon parts and such. One of these was aligned with the Nalargon so that anybody who plays it has the microphone in front of his/her face. So naturally I was somewhat irritated when the Nal had been moved...
And that's not even the main issue (at least to me). It's much worse when you're in the middle of a performance with your band and some composite-clad robocop wannabe comes along and messes with your Nalargon and suddenly you're playing on empty air in front of a dozen people. That ticks me off to no end....
What non-musicians do to move it is use the radial menu on the Nal and select Play (or Use or whatever it is). Obviously it won't work because they don't have the skills to play it, but it will still move the instrument to their location. But you can play the Nalargon without moving it. You don't use the radial menu, but just target it and do /startmusic. That way it stays where it is.
On the other hand, this little annoyance granted me my one and only PvP encounter. I was semi-AFK in my cantina (Using another computer, just standing around doing nothing except moving occasionally to not get logged out) and one of the server's griefers came in, saw someone standing around, and issued a /duel request. I watched this without giving any hint I was actually there. I watched him waltz up to the nal, unequip his weapon, and start moving it off the stage and up towards the bar. Oh, did I mention this was in early 2004 and during my short stint as TKA? As he was passing me, I accepted the duel and started smacking specials. He had enough time to stand back up, re-equip his gun, and get in one or two shots before he was incapped. And I owe that little victory to him being able to move my nalargo, and having to unequip his gun to do so.

I don't know very much about this issue but I thought I'd make a suggestion just in case it is a decent one:

I think the main problem with this would be visual. Having two 3d objects on top of each other is bad juju (and not the fun bar in Seattle
). I know it's done for decorating a lot as a last resort, but the dueling faces just make me nuts! I'd hate to see this implemented on purpose. o.O I always assumed that's why this was handled as a dropped object that could be shared any way.
@ Tiaga - Ha! Your TKA stories crack me up and that one is awesome. ![]()
