Thread: Martyn's guide to being an excellent musician V2.0
good guide, Martyn!
Maybe some day I can come sit in with your bandif I'm evervisiting Theed. ![]()

Note that you will not be able to play all songs on all instruments. Being able to play different songs on different instruments comes with experience.(Which I was never able to figure out when you get the different abilities, because I didn't have all instruments at all skill levels)
This part is slightly outdated. Now, you can play any song you know on any instrument you know.
Yeah, I know that. The board keeps EATING my changes and edits. Its annoying. having *edit* pop up and eat the posting, and when you keep posting, you foget to edit the change again, and then you are still screwed.
BTW, there is nothing wrong with using macros. But there is a definate problem with using -bandflourish- in a macro.
Definitely in agreement there. Spamming bandflourish is bad too. I actually like short macros because they give structure to an otherwise random song, but they also give me some time to type and chat with folks.

Oh I use 8-flourish macros all the time. I don't see any problem with that.
I see a problem with macros designed to run for an extended period of time so you can walk away from the computer if you wanted to.
Thanks Hana ![]()
I figure once I am up to it, I will write a Bandleader guide to include the /bandflourish command, since right now no one wants you to use it ![]()
Am I the only one who wants to at some point see people publishing their songs as macro sequences?
Someday, I'd like to see composers publishing scores for other musicians and bands, including seperate macros for different instrument players with the appropriate pauses and /bandflourishes so that, for instance...a band at the Moenia cantina on Bria can play a song composed by a musician who createdit in the Coronet cantina on Ahazi. Not to mention solo pieces that are a simple but creative sequence of flourishes and pauses for a single player on a specific instrument with a specific song.
It seemspossible to incorporate pauses in each part so that the varied musicians move in and out of the song at appropriate points, include bandflourishes so they all sync up at various points, and include sections where a particular musician can /band off to perform manual solos while the rest of the band continues bandflourishing. And drop in a few of the visual effects in along the way, creating cascades of /dazzles in a line of musicians...etc. So an entire score would consist of a seperate music sheet (macro) for each player...everyone starts at the same time, and it plays the same way every time you do it except for those parts where manual solos are included...all that and alot more. I've only touched on ideas that go much further.
At some point there's a line where this crosses from being a live musician playing "live" by doing things manually...to being part of an orchestra playing under the direction of a conductor...to being nothing more than a record player in a nice suit
But I'd like to explore those boundries, myself...and see what we can do to share our creations.
I dunno. But there's room here for more than just pushing the buttons every few seconds. We need the capability to use macros that are sufficiently long to incorporate the elements I've described, and more. I've been creating some fairly potent (as far as the reaction they draw from my listeners) 6 minute plus songs which require my painstaking composition for hours to get right, but only the press of a button to perform. Macros are an incredibly flexible tool. It's surprising how much you can do within one.
Is there room for composers and orchestrated musiciansin this community? Or are we all jazz musicians, riffing it live every time and scorning the oboe player in the 3rd row who sits unmoving until his part comes up?
Macros area tool...let's not call for breakingthe tooljust because we don't like how some people use it.
Thanks for listening ![]()
Going back a re-reading the thread...I have to confess...some of what I wrote in the previous message is actually a response to things I've seen said elsewhere...and not particularly in this thread...you guys just got me going again on the particular subject ![]()
My apologies if parts of my message seem to be a hijack ![]()
OOC
I'd like to add to the point of pplharassingdancers... There has been an aweful lot of that happeing, and if you harrass the dancer in my band, expect a duel invitation, and after you are incapacitated, expect a request for an appology to be delivered to the band's dancer....
This has happened before... and they allappologized ![]()
BTW, if you are ever in tatooine on Gorath, come to the Mos Eisley Lucky Despot, where my band 'H2Z' plays often.

I have added to a thread on the Chilastra forum about the same topic of reaping the full benefit of the tool the game gives us. Flexing the musician muscle will only take a little organization and dedication on our parts.
the thread is here: http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Chilastra&message.id=3406
Currently /bandflourishis broken (from beta standpoint) and only the musician that hits a bandflourish gets exp ...while eating the entire bands action bar for no exp for them.
I encourage everyone to /bug this...it's causing much dissent in the musician community and spoiling fun.
Also more experienced players exploit this and steal exp from newbie musicians.
/bandflourish off ...is broken..it doesn't last "permanently" and you have to spam it to keep from having your exp sucked dry by some leeching retch.
My 2 credits worth...
It's pretty simple, DNA42, just go under your actions panel (Control-A) and select the macros tab. You can then select "New Macro". In that new window you give it a name, an icon and type in the macro, something like this:
/flourish 4; /pause 4; /flourish 2; /pause 4; /flourish 5; /pause 5
and so on. Not too tough, now go write some cool tunes!
In the words of the ever eloquent Bill and Ted:
EXCELLENT!
Thanks Chukker, and I'll have to see your group sometime
