Thread: 15 sec wait to start after stopping?

I just logged on after the Publish 8 patch and noticed a new change I didn't see mentioned in the notes. It seems when I stop playing I have to wait 15 seconds before I can start again. I like to stopand change instruments during songs and then startplaying again. Anyway, I have never noticed this before so I am assuming it is a new thing. Anyone else see this happening? Not sure why this has just happened but it's a little bit frustrating having to wait when I am so eager to dive in to the song. heh.

This was put into place to stop the 30 second buff exploit. To do it, you had to fool the system by rapid fire start/stopping music and dance. It is also why the 2 minute minimum time was added in for buffs(you still build the buff during the 2 minutes however).

But, I agree, it is an annoyance and impacts musicians the most because if you try and switch your instrument, you have to wait 15 seconds before you can continue. This 15 second delay really needs to be in place but the devs really really need to make it now so that you can switch instruments on the fly but not stop playing.

*blinks in disbelief*

So I am rehearsing with my band as usual on a Tuesday night and get:

"You must wait 13 seconds after stopping before you can begin entertaining again."

What on earth is going on here? Preventing people from exploiting the system by hurting those genuine entertainers? I personally don't like the exploiters.. but it never really bothered me as long as I could play my way. Now thanks to them I can't. I can't change instruments on the fly as I like to, yes there is pausemusic but sometimes you have to stop and start to perform ananimated emote in a choreographed routine. Now all the work goes down the drain because of exploiters?

This band leader is NOT happy

Woe betide the person who thought this was a good idea.

Grrrrrr...

I agree with K'vera on this matter. It was very convenient to be able to switch instruments in the middle of a song... in fact, some of the songs written for Talus Moon call for an instrument change during the routine! Wait for 12-15 seconds? I guess I might as well change that part to a solo for about 4-5 ticks

Admittedly, I am a person who has used the 30 second macro (only for dance), and I never had a problem with it, considering I only used it in the Theed cantina, whichis *almost* always full of AFKers and combat people simply looking for a fast buff. I have always been an ATK entertainer and have no problem chatting it up with people. In fact I love it. I consider being a part of Talus Moon testament enough that I appreciate, love, and work hard where my professions are concerned.

So fine, consider the 30 second buff an exploit... I will never use it again!(I heard it was NOT an exploit when it was first discovered)

But please, do not ruin entertaining where it counts.... do not make it even more difficult for people who actually utilize the game and play it for all it's worth.

Well, I'm not thrilled with this implementation either, and I do wish the devs had first just made a clear statement that speedbuffs were exploits. The CSRs could've at least tried to enforce such a rule. Maybe it would've been fruitless. In the end, I guess I am glad to see some dev response tothe /stop-/start exploit, but a more musical fix would be preferable. I'll ask the devs whether a better long-term measure can be coded.

I dont' mind it at all. As a real musician who does switch instruments it isn't out of the ordinary to take a few seconds to prepare yourself with a new instrument. RP it. We ARE supposed to be entertainers.

A couple more things: I think /pausemusic still works fine. At least it seems to for me. I know, that doesn't really help you, but I thought I'd mention it in case people were wondering whether it's still possible to stop sound and restart it quickly in mid-song. It is, using /pausemusic.

But yeah, I can't figure out a way to change instruments quickly in mid-tune. You can't do it while in /pausemusic mode. That's a bummer.

That said, the 15-second break between tunes doesn't seem longer than 15 seconds on my PC. <shrug> I normally like to come to a full stop between tunes anyway, so it doesn't bother me so much.

this thread has the most obvious direct effects to performance bands.

it is VERY VERY bad thing - almost game-breaking for performances.

Well, it depends how you perform. For you, it sounds like a big problem. For me, it's not a big problem at all. It really won't affect me, since I take full stops between numbers. (I hate /changebandmusic with a passion.) But the game should accommodate all performance styles, and now it doesn't, which isn't good. I'll make sure the devs understand how strongly you feel about this.

Nosmina/Gknee,

Yes, you are right that IRL it would take a few seconds at least to change instruments. My father was a woodwind musician for most of his life, and he doubled up when playing in various orchestras (meaning for those who don't understand, that he played Bassoon and Clarinet for instance, switching between the two mid performance).

However, in the SWG universe... when the entertainersare *used* to the short span of time to switch from one instrument to the next, it's not unreasonable for them to be a little... disturbed (?) when they suddenly find that they have to wait an extra10 seconds or so before they can play again. Would you want to miss a cue because you were forced to take longer for an instrument switch when you were accustomed to doing it faster? In all honesty that would be pretty embarrassing and frustrating for me as a musician, in game or out of game.

Oh, and "roleplay" it?

What do you think some of us have been doing all along?

Hey NJ.....

15 seconds is a long time....how bout we lobby them to reduce it to the amout of time it takes the flourish cap to reset. I believe this is 8 seconds. If you can /stop/start every 8 seconds, its no different that spamming 5 flos every 8 seconds, and then mak.es the change of instruments a 2 flourish change...instead of 3 or 4.

Maybe this will be good enough to work with. I am frustrated with the 15 seconds myself ...especially with changing my droid track, starting the droid, then stopping and restarting a new instrument.
