Thread: Raising the importance of our instruments!

OK this is an idea to both improve our crafting aspect and our performance result aspect...

Instruments that have additional importance. There would be three categories of instrument with the possibility of more. These instruments would be decayable just like armour, clothing and tools.

  • Increased wound healing - These instruments would incorporate aBE tissue and have an experimented value that adds to durability.

  • Increased mind enhancement - These instruments would use rare resources and perhaps even a semi-rare loot drop.

  • Lower action cost - These instruments would use rare resources and perhaps even a semi-rare loot drop.

  • Possible future addition possibilites - Things like buff duration, the possibility of adding new types of buffs ala chef foods (scouting bonuses, to hit mods, defense mods etc), and additional special effects not currently offered through the skill tree.

This idea would benefit artisans (resources needed), musicians (we get to make and use the instruments), combatants (loot aquision, healingand buff use) and bio engineers (wound healing tissues).

All excellent ideas. I've mentioned several of them to the devs in the past, and they've said they do like the idea of making instrument quality matter. We talked specifically about making it relevant to the buff, but nothing has come of it -- yet. I do think the original design intention was that quality should matter; they just ran out of time to implement it. Anyway, from time to time this makes our top-five list -- I think it was sort of mentioned in our #5 issue last time around -- and I've tried to keep it alive. It would certainly breathe life into the musical instrument crafting biz, which right now is sort of uninteresting.

Anyway, I'll raise this with the devs again. It can't hurt to keep trying, and on this one I think they're pretty sympathetic.

I do hope that they will not make instruments need some kind of loot that pure Entertainers (no combat skills at all) will never find.

It would be nice if there were an item that we could buy with our 'fame' (whatever that ends up as) that could be added to instruments and dancing shoes that would add to our skills...other than Wound Healing, where we don't need any more bloody help!

Yeah, the irony of healing is that the better you become, the less people need you. I heal people's mind wounds and battle fatigue in seconds, often. It was more fun when they had to sit and shmooze with me for a few minutes when I was a newb.

Of course, now we have the buff for that, but the buff too often feels like a business transaction, not a performance.

How can anything be a performance when the songs are so repetetive that most people...myself included...usually have the Player Music turned off? Scary thought there...I've been a musician for over a year and I don't typically have the option to listen to what I'm playing turned on.

Just tossing my two creds in......

How would it fare if they instead of letting experimentation effect healing, let it effect XP gains as well as the very excellent idea of lowered action cost? Sure all we would have at Master is the lowered action cost, but I am leaning towards not wanting to speed up the healing process. When I am performing for people who are really banged up, it just seems like they are fully healed in a matter of moments. BF healing seems to me to be even faster. /shrug

I am a glutton for punishment, I play with my sound on and turned up!

You're thinking in terms of someone who is a master musician though. Most if not all of the instruments I craft and sell are bought by new musicians who are in the midst of training the skill and for who the enhanced healing stuff does make a difference.

Increased wound healing: Well there have been a few time when I even as a master musician and master entertainer would have like to be able to heal faster. Once with a victim of a very bad corvette trip (all black ham bars, and a lot of BF). And a couplet of other times when I was preparing a group for a trip (why can people not arrive at the same time).

Increased mind enhancement: I think more powerful buffs, would be a bad experimentation line for instruments kind of a end all be all line that everyone had to have maxed out. But how about faster buffing? I know there is a drink that provide faster buffs, so it should be able to give that ability to instruments as well.

Lower action cost: Lower action cost in instruments would be a nice experimentation. It could let non-humans play the 5 flourishes per xp tick (with added visual effects), with out resorting to a buff of some kind.

If experimentation on instruments starts to matter, we should start having decay on them as well. Or the one ones selling instruments would have to count on no repent business and this have to make all the credit of a person on just one buy. You know like architects have it now.

FWIW, I made a general reference to this idea in my most recent post in the Correspondent Forum. This is the kind of idea that appeals to the devs the most. It's feasible to implement within the current code base; it wouldn't require a massive rewriting of code; and it wouldn't stir up any significant opposition from any other profession. It would give us more to do -- sussing out what the best materials are for the best instruments, spending more time crafting, etc. In the long run, I'm optimistic we'll get some of these changes. In the short run, I'm not, just because the devs have other priorities in the short run: JTL and the combat revamp chief among them.

Incidentally, Echinacea, I can certainly understand if people turn the sound off. The best music gets old when you hear it every day for fifteen months. Me, I always play with player music on. I still enjoy hearing Folk and Ballad after all these months. Call me crazy.

I play the same way. Player Music turned off. Did this ages ago. It was somewhere around the 16,000th time I heard the same songs and the same riffs that I realized my sanity was slipping from my grasp.

That's pathetic. A Musician who can't stand to hear his own music. We need about 30 new songs, like yesterday.

As I've said before, the Entertainer professions are completely stale, stagnant, and very un-entertaining - at least from a veteran's perspective...everyone I know who's played the game for longer than 4 months has Player Music turned off. I'm more entertaining by the crazy stuff I say and /emote than with any of the so-called "skills" I possess as an Entertainer.

The Dev Team has just let us stagnate for too long. We're almost beyond help, I fear.

New song? Everyone will play it, in 4 days it'll be cliche. New instrument? Everyone will play it because we've been DYING for something new for WAAAAY too long. It'll be cliche in about a week and a half. Then we'll probably have to wait another year for something else.
