There's more tomerchant than just spamming, it is not the most effective way to attract interest, imo. For example, someone on our server held a raffle for high-end loot items, with a vendor set up for ticket sales. The items were attractive enough tobring inalargenumber of ticket purchases. And what do ya know..there's about 15 other vendors in the same house. Even those who didn't purchase a ticket, or visit the mall, now know of its existence. I'd say that was a fairly successful marketing campaign.
Spam isn't the only way to get a customer in your shop, you just need to be creative.

Yep. Very much against removing speaking commands from macros, as such things are in certain social macros of mine done for affect, like my "phone calls" I use to go afk for brief periods.

The only problem I see is then you are talking in mulitple channels and miss-tell. I admit, I am a bit a a ditz, but I often send stuff to guild-chat (/gui) when I meant group-chat (Ctrl-G). When I am having multiple conversations, as we merchants tend to do, this is embarrassing. But then if I was capped and could not [Ctrl-up] and say it in the correct place quickly people would think I was ignoring them.
(Does any of this make sense to others???)
Also, sometimes I say something at a starport. You all know howthe AFK spamcomes in fits-and-jerks. Well, I say something and instantaneously it is gone from spatial, then there is a brief pause. People can usually only read in the pause. To make sure people monitoring their spatial can see, I put it in again (so that it is at the bottom and is readable). If you have ignored everyone so far, this appears to looks like:
Cannot someone teach me...
Cannot someone teach me...
Cannot someone teach me...
But, if you have not ignored everyone, you would not have noticed it the first time. I don't put this on a continuous macro, but I might [Ctrl-up] it a few times. You could say I am adding to the spam, but I see it as necessary to deal with the spam.
The point of the story: There are times when repeating several times quickly makes sense and is useful.
My vote is to take away the ability to disable auto-afk (so the "ignore afk speech" function works)and have CSRs more active in quellingafk spammers who are trying to circumvent it (be available to investigate when asked, approach the person, try to talk with them, and when it is clear that no-one is home, take action -- logging them off, warning, suspending, or whatever.) IfSOE really wants to stop AFKers, they have the tools to do it.
Hey, maybe overt Imperial player characterscould be recruited to investigate AFKers. This may add to the GCW!!! And if Master Smugglers were "invisible" to overt Imperials, this could give smugglers a fun way to "be bad".
