I hear ya - what I have found is that the street/starport sellers only have so many products and are only on for so long. After they run out of their 1 or 2or 3 products or log off, the Merchant planetary advertising kicks in and people have to start looking around. At that point, as long as your price is fair and not gouging the customer, you can make profitable sales off your vendor at 50%-100% what the street vendors were selling for. It all depends on how much you are a casual gamer and how much business you want to have - the true competition for me is the power-gamer Masters with Guild or friend backing that do tremendous volume and can afford to sell much closer to cost and still rake in the bucks. I will probably make as many tents as my crate of panels will allow (6) and then that's it unless a friend makes a special request. I have already made 4, 2 of which I am using and 2 that I stuck on my vendor. Funny thing about street sellers is that on my way to Master, anyone I saw selling small houses for 5k or mediums for 40k or less I would buy them and resell them at 30%-50% markup - one less consumer with "dirt cheap" expectations and free money for me was my logic, and I always had a good variety of stock without having to make everything myself.
Hahah. I've done that myself. I don't make small houses for sale much any more. I refused to sell them at the stupidly low rate that people wanted them for so I only make them now as a special request for a guildmate or something. People are far more reasonable for mediums or larges.

You CAN declare a tent as residence =)
From reading this it looks like I should be able to keep a stocking backpack in the tent too (COOL)

Only a basic quick deco job so far... alas no stairs makes it hard to do nicely of course...

I'm assuming you can only use vendor tents in player cities and no one has tried outside a city?
I know many of the other items can be used for decorations in houses - the streetlights make a nice alternative to torches. But they didn't seem to put off much light.....
Maybe they only come on at night, but still.

You can place merchant tents outside of player cities, yes.
Tekaos posted a really nice merchant FAQ last week:
