Thread: Some people just dont understand the merchant profession...
I am a Tailor (not master yet) and i just wanted to say that I would be thrilled if someone came in and started buying my stock. If they are reselling it, so much the better. It gives me wider exposure without having to do all the traveling and set-up trouble in other locations. That means I have more time to craft and waste less of it running all over the place.
Perhaps to soothe any feelings, perhaps insert into description "Product of XXXX".
As aMasterWeaponsmithand a Master Merchant, Id be honored to have peeps buy my stuff for resale, hell, long as I got my asking price, Im tickled pink ..infact, theres always room in a deal to sell at wholesale so reseller has a bit of a profit too ..but Id be happy to see my name associated in some form.
The Tailor IMO is is feeling s/he is loosing association/identity with her products, by customersbuying from you, the reseller, they dont realize "Tailor" exist.
It's really simple really..
Tell that person to....well, insert a profanity laden tirade here.
I routinely check out other vendors,as well as make purchases on the bazaar on a galactic scale before making my trips to go and get them all. Why? Because its what I do.
My profession sells things to others. So that I can make a profit, I sell for more than I pay. I am based on Naboo, so I check the other planets to see if something is selling cheaper there than here, buy enough of it to realize a profit once I factor in my travel expenses, and then pick it up and return it to my vendors.
The same holds true on a planetary scale. I can buy cheap Chitin armor from a smith outside of Theed and resell it at my Moenia vendor for more simply because the people in Moenia are willing to pay what I'm asking. If I find a particular craftsman that is willing to sell me bulk goods at a reduced rate, I buy and then sell for his single unit asking price on all of my vendors. We are both happy.
The only thing that the Tailor can do to you is put you on the ban list for her home so that you can't use her vendor. Otherwise, I'd keep doing my thing. If you feel like a weasel for doing it, just be glad that vehicles aren't in the game yet so that you can't be compared to a used speeder salesman. As long as you are making money, friends can be bought.....
you are perfectly within your rights to buy and resell. That vendor is an idiot. I agree, cleaning out a vendor is bad form, but buying a couple items for resale is perfectly fine. She is an idiot.
Please, somebody come and clean out my vendor!
Have the best revenge: find another supplier that understands business. She will lose all the sales she was making through your store and you can have a much more enjoyable interaction with another supplier. She made her money whether she sold it or not. Trying to discourage wholesalers will only hurt her. Its really pretty absurd. Sounds like "she" is an adolescent boy.. this has a very male "pissing contest" feel to it.
I think most people are just happy to make a sale, and what you are doing is to everyone's benefit. Keep doing what your doing, but find someone friendlier to do business with.
Regards,
Artuk
If s/he comes back wanting to cut a deal, turn it down.
Other than that, I have to side with the original poster. If you buy something, you're prefectly in your rights to resell it to whomever you want. I sell a lot of things in the bazaar and more and more things on my vendor. I'm overjoyed that people buy the things they do that the prices I've set. If I thought I could sell them for more, I would. If someone else buys something from me and then resells it, hey, I got my money...I don't really have anything to complain about.
I'm involved in a lot of these kinds of supplier/retailer confusion, but that's because I focus so much of my efforts in importing & exporting.
1) I think the biggestvalid issue that artisan/retailers have with using their vender supply to stock up other venders is that it can force a sudden (and unanticipated) need to resupply (and thus recraft.) I'm particularly sensitive to the impact this has on non-factory artisans (such as chefs, who still for the most part are forced to hand-craft all their product.) Is that stealing? Of course, not, it's an inconvienence at worst, but why would you want your suppliers upset with you?
2) It is always good edicate to contact someone that you see as a potential supplier (and the same goes true for artisans contacting merchants that could be good retailers) rather than doing it "on the sly" -- it can make one look sneaky if they are purchasing items to markup (or making offers of supplies unsolicited) without having established some kind of contact.
3) In addition to being a merchant, I'm also a supplier to other merchants, and using that email function is the way to go -- my retailers know what I can make, I know what else they are looking for, I can email them in advance to let them know my production schedule and even setup "custom" runs for them (branded with their names in the items) all kinds of little extras that further enhance both our business. But you only find those kind of opportunities when you are in touch with the other person.
4) Jerks are jerks, and not everyone will want every kind of interdependency. I'm still looking for a good chef provider, for example, never having found one that was interested in being a supplier -- where is our galactic Martha Stewart chef with Hutt like business savvy?? *evil grin* And that's fine ... keep looking, keep evangelizing what you're looking for, and be as kind when confronted withpeople cutting off their nose to spite their face ![]()
Clearing out a vendor is poor form, there is nothing worse than an empty vendor. But you say you didn't do that so....
The issue I have is with the tailor.... if someone is consistently coming back to buy items to resell, they are obviously selling too low. They need to raise prices, or ban the person.....
I'd have no problem with reselling, butwould be a little upsetif the merchant didn't contact me ahead of time. Because most merchants are probably going to be interested in the most popular items (fleshwraps, fancy dresses, dusters) right? Well so are my customers. So a heads up would be much appreciated so that my customers don't show up to a vendor that may still have items on it, but none of the items they were looking for.
It can be very damaging to a shop (especially one farther from a big town)if customers get there and there are a lot of items out of stock. Contacting the artisan ahead of time will let them plan to have enough listed for both you and their regular customers.
Actually, I'd sell to a merchant cheaper than I'd put something on my vendor, as long as we had some kind of agreement. A guaranteed repeat customer is always worth a discount!
I run a furniture shop and I just know I am getting resold by some of my "customers". I mean unless one guy actually has 800 metal chairs in his house there is something going on. LOL I get irritated by being resold but I never say anything... Why the irritation?
Mainly it has to do with maintaining my vendor stock for my (for lack of a better word) "real" customers. If Mr Re-seller buys me out then Mr Steady customer finds my vendor devoid of what he needs and does not neccessarily know where Mr Re-seller's shop is to get those items. It is also irritating because I generally have to resort to raising my prices to avoid the above mentioned problem.
Now why do I never say anything to the resellers? Aside from the obvious (I cannot always prove they are doing it) I believe there is nothing wrong with what they are doing even if it makes my job harder sometimes. I make a widget. I sell that widget for a price of my choosing. If a reseller pays1000cr for my widgethe/she has every right to try to sell it to someone else for 1200cr. There is nothing stopping me from selling it myself for that price. I mean I get my 1000cr from the sale and that's obviously what I felt was enough.
I agree with the person who mentioned the communication thing. It would be sooooo much nicer if I knew who my resellers were and could make arrangements with them outside of my normal shop sales. Oh and I'm speaking of people who literally buy out my vendor, not folks who pick up a few items here and there to augment their shop inventory.
Either way you did nothing wrong.
If you are always emptying her vendor it’s making her look bad to her real customers by never having anything in stock. She’s got every right to be ticked off about it.
b) the deal is exclusive. You buy my weapons and you agree to buy from nobody else. Yes I'll make your business work for you but you must make mine work for me.
c) You sell off planet. I want coverage and free advertising but I don't require you to sell my items next door to me.
