I recently dropped down to 3-2-0-4
Nothing changed on my vendors besides the upkeep cost

AND you must have fewer items on sale than allowed by your item limit.
Otherwise your vendors will continue to function as normal but you will not be able to place anything up for sale.

If I drop Merchant what will happen to my vendor and everything on it?

Not sure what will happen if you drop merchant all the way but if you at least have the merchant in artisan then all goods and merchants should remain until they are emptied at which point they will disapear during which you will be unable to restock any of them until you skills match the number of vendors left ie artisan xx4x lets you have 1 vendor so you must wait until you have 1 vendor left to use it

This will also happen if you drop artisan all the way. Your vendor will stay up, but you will not be able to put new items up for sale. The vendor will eventually vanish once all the items have fallen into the stockroom.

I want to make sure I have this right. The vendor will disappear once all items have fallen off the sales side and into the stock room? So, if you have a mass of items fall off at the same time andthey happen to be everything left on the vendor, the items are lost?

No, after your sales drop your vendor will unregister from the planetary map first, you get a mail that your vendor is empty. And after a certain time the vendor has been empty (30 days iirc) it gets removed.

fair warning you may not get email, andthe vendor may poof on it's own.
I have seen many many problems come in from folks who 'dropped' skill and the system 'did not do what it should have'
Basically, think the motto for dropping merchantskill while you have a vendor with stuff up -do so at your own risk-
