Thread: Is resale a dirty word?

Hmmm. Wasn't trying to sound emotional in my initial post. Guess I shouldn't post after chewing someone out for being stupid (irl, not anything to do with you or the boards).

Anyway, I was trying to give you the mentality of what a crafter thinks about someone reselling their stock. As a crafter, I want tomake and sell my starship parts directly to the pilot. My primairy focus is on crafting. I only have enough merchant to run my business. I carry way to many parts to even consider doing private sales and like to keep as much stock on my vendors as I can.

I also try to look at an issue from both sides. I personally dislike reselling. But as a merchant who might not do any physical crafting, reseling is your 'craft'. If you think something is priced to low, buy it. The worse that can happen to you is you get banned from that specific shop. Their are so many ways around a ban that it is practically worthless, but it is the only option right now.

As for picketing or placing harvesters named 'your a theif' around a merchant shop...pfffffft waste of time and energy.

As I said in my initial post. Everyone is going to have different opionions on resellers. Don't listen to the 'you robbed me' speach from the crafters, but dont use the 'you sold it I bought it...sour grapes' argument you get from the resellers. Each side should be able to come up with better reasons than that.

Just take a look at both sides of the issue and make your own decision about what you want to do. In your case go ahead and resell, that is what a pure merchant should do. Just expect the bannings, picketing, harvester greifing, and nasty emails/tells and consider it part of your playing experience.

Hope the tone in that post was a little better than the tone in the first post. I'm not trying to rant or flame anyone, just posting the crafters point of view vs. the resellers point of view. Since this is in the merchants forum I'm certain the vast majority of opinions will be that it is ok to resell. In the various crafter forums you will probably get the opposite point of view. Ultimately you should play the game as you want to.

Well put. In the end, if people act in a reasonable manner then there is more than enough for everyone to enjoy a little bit.

Reselling?

I'm on the kettemoor server, I sell swoops on the bazaar at 12k each. Ppl are forever buy 10-20-25 as soon as I put them up. This has been going on for almost 2-3 months now. When I see one person buying alot of swoops I send them a email saying how many more would you like I happy to make them for you at that 12k price. What has happened recently is that because of this other merchant have had to lower there pricing to the 12k price to sell there bikes.

Personally I encourage ppl to buy my swoops at 12k ea and to place orders for them!! My cost on a swoops is 4-8k(resources) and 42sec of craft time. Sell 100 a day making just in swoops off the bazaar is 400-800k per day please please resell my bikes!!! If 4 ppl buy me outa day I now have 125 places on the bazaar filled up with my product instead of the 25 I can normally have!!

Funny, I have a thread goingon inthe Shadowfire trade forumsencouraging people to buy my armor as cheap as it is and resell it for whatever they want. Just get it off my vendors!!

As long as I get my asking price, I don't care and don't want to know what you are doing with my goods. I will never sell at a loss, so I never worry about resellers. If you have a problem with reselling, you need to up your prices or do some better market research. Banning people from your shop only hurts your business. Word of mouth is the greatest sellers tool and if someone does not like you, they will tell all thier friends... then one day you are trying to figure out why you haven't sold anything in a week....

I think its one thing to buy a few items and resell..

But there is a very big difference when someone cleans out your vendor daily just to raise market prices on something, or just to keep you cleaned out. (the main reason why ive never put all my stock forsale at one time. If im on and i get cleaned out ill repost something with in the hour sometimes as soon as the leave the shop lol. Ive had people come back a few days in a row or even weeks.. but when something is always there they finally give up in futility.)

... on a side note im getting outta the merchant gig and selling all my stuff for 1 cpu I hope to hell some merchant comes and cleans me out and resells Getting outta the selling gig having done it since launch for a while. Tired of no restock button.. tired of tells and e-mails.. just a much needed break while i finish my crafting mastery and senses master.. and vehicle control ! then its back to CL1 but ill then be a jedi : P (hmm crafting while holding a lightsaber waiting on the next bounty hunter to show up.. might spice up crafting a bit !! )

BTW.. i suport resellers when its a deal.. we all know how hard it is to keep a well stocked vendor If someone came to me and said i want to resell.. i would make um crates and cut um an even better deal.. it has nothing to do with i got my price whats there to complain about. Its about keeping a well stocked vendor, and when a reseller cleans you out, they are not only adding tons of work on my part they are hurting all my other customers too. Yes sending me mail ording 20 crates to resell is lots less work to me than cleaning out my vendor of 10 crates worth...

I have only cleaned out an entire vendor once, even so, I plan on making a PlzRead thing on the vendor I put it on giving credit to the original crafters.

i used to make all my in game credits from resale. spice, food, resources, loots. i sold it all...and made a decent chunk of change doing that. i was a master merchant, and that was pretty much all i sold was things i found cheaper somewhere else. its a way of business.

i say keep up the good work.

I spent some time doing this on BH droids. People wer selling full crates for 200k less, so I bought all but a few, and listed them on my vendor. They sold as well. I got an email from one of them complaining about it, and I replied that considering BH can make more than 7 millino creds on mission payouts alone with a full crate of Arakyds or Seekers, my prices didnt seem so high. But her motive in pricing was to supply her Guild with the droids, and to combat the "gougers".

I never fully buy the person out either. But I do enjoy running aroudn the Galaxy looking for good deals. I've said it many times before... if your product is moving too fast, raise your prices. Works every time.

The whole point of Merchant is to buy stuff wholesale and resell it at a profit. I used to do this all the time. Now with GWVS and nearly free travel to all planets/locations I do not bother and have dropped most of the Merchant profession.

first resale is a personal opinion of doing business there is no right or wrong of it, everyone thinks differently and should not feel bad about doing so.

secondly banning is again personal..it is anyones right to ban anyone else from their own structures {providing it is not griefing which is another story}

so how does this help? it is up to you, take it and move on or dwell on it and ruin your gameplay.

you don't mind when folks resell your items, others mind when you resell theirs..it everyone right to think both ways.
You will always get both sides saying "I do it" and "you shouldnt do it"..but let's be realistic..it is your choice.
{and you will be the one to deal with the repercussions for taking either side..thats the game, nothing new there}

Personaly, I look at it like this. You put your item on a vendor for 10k credits. You want 10k credits for selling that, and you get 10k credits if Joe comes along and buys it. If he turns around and sells for 50k credits - more power to him. You as the initial seller got your money. Now he's trying to get his. You as the initial seller no longer have rights to it. You sold it away...

Now for some people they don't like this, and I can appreciate that. It's just not how I see things. Just for the record, I've been a Master Architect since September of '03 so I know all about crafters pride in work vs. resellers desire to make a buck any way they can. I just have no issue with people reselling as I believe I sell for good prices to begin with.

What upsets me is when I'm flying through 50 resources I'm putting up on my vendor and get that "item sold" and it's a 100k stack of great stuff for 50k instead of 500k! LOL But that's my own fault, and it's me I'm mad at!

Personally, I never cared if people re-sold my goods. It's still money for me.

My only complaint about resellers is that as a crafter, I put a lot of hours and sweat into what I make. I price it the way I want, not what other people think I should. I love my business, and the people it brings to my shop. I love it when people say "I love your shop!" I love it that people come out of their way to my shop to buy things because a friend told them about it.

Now you may be asking what does this have to do with reselling? Well I'll tell you my opinion I don't like people reselling my stuff for the purpose of reselling it. I prefer people come to my shop and get it from the source, cause I guarantee you that the person reselling it knows nothing about my chosen crafting profession. I don't spend hours of my time keeping my vendors stocked to have someone come and buy me out for the purpose of reselling to make a quick buck. If you buy out a crafters vendor and think that it's ok because they got their money.. yea in a way you are right. But not every crafter is out to make money, I know I'm not.. I am a crafter for the love of the profession not what it does to my bank. The thing you don't consider when you buy out a crafters vendor is that the next person who comes along isn't going to find what they want... it hurts my business.

The major problem I have is that I mark all my items with my "mark"....that means that item is carrying MY name, not yours. It's MY reputation on the line, not yours. I've spent lots and lots of MY time working on that reputation, you didn't. So yea, I guess I take it personally when someone put's that valuable, well earned reputation at risk by selling my stuff at their store marked up.

If you really want to resell my stuff - talk to me. Ya know what that is.. /tell soandso, or email soandso.. it's not done a lot anymore But I guarantee you if you contact me in regards to placing a large order to resell I'd be more than willing to help you out..and more than likely sell to you at a price lower than I sell on my vendors. I'd rather fill a large order than have to go thru a ton of emails because you bought a ton of stuff off my vendors and aren't going to actually use it. It's win/win situation really.

I spend a lot of time to stock my vendors with the best stuff I can craft. Being a shipwright, this takes considerable time and I pride myself on having everything someone needs to go from novice to master on my vendors. I get tells all the time asking about a specific component. I don't have to hesitate to say that yes I have that and give them the waypoint.

Secondly, yesthey are robbing me. Yes, I got the credits I wanted from the items thatthe resellerbought. But I don't get the credits from all of the other equipment that a pilot will buy, or the return business/recommendations. Most of my /tells are for advanced blasters. I send them the wp to my shop, and in about 1/2 hour I get the vendor sale complete email. And then I get 10more sale complete emailsfrom them as they pick up all of the other component typesand possibly a new ship as well.

I also get /tells, emailsand people visiting me saying thattheir friendrecommended my shop since I have everything they need.

All this comes about by having one item on a vendor that someone is looking for.

It isn't all about credits. It is also about having a good working relationship with the players that come into your shop and helping them fix up a starship or giving advice on how to do something in game to help them out.

Ask a reseller what the best loadout for a starship is, or how to mine ateroid resources. If they bother to answer you, they probably wont know. Ashipwright will. The same can be said for all of the other crafting professions as well.

I'm sure your going to get more posts from others saying reselling is good or bad, andall of the opinions are right. Itall depends on how you view the game.

Egrim -- Master Shipwright/Master ForceCrafter

Complete total agreement. Not to metion that I hate the ones who buy me out strictly to corner the market on a particular item. Sure, i got my money, but my prices are fair, and I hate that someone who buys me out strictly to corner the market and force their price on everyone else makes it so everyone else never gets a chance to see that the item CAN be had for a more reasonable price.

Plus, just as the post above, it's MY name on the item. Not yours. MY reputation. I've worked with resellers who ask me beforehand. I'll gladly work with them.
