Thread: Is resale a dirty word?

I was just involved in a thread on Eclipse Trade forum where buying from a crafter and reselling at a profit was at issue. A player had purchased som RIS armor for 5.5 mil, which is a fair bit under market. This player then offered the armor for 7 mil on the forums. He was castigated for this. In his defense I explained that merchant is a separate Profession, that buying for reselling is not onlt contemplated, but recognized in the Merchant profession guides as a legitimate way to earn credits.

Well, in a separate and ironic transaction occurring nearly simultaneously, Ludissk buys an ADK from me. Appreciating his business I entered his shop to buy a set of armor from him. As I was browsing his PSG vendor, he banned me from the building and ejected me, lol.

My question is this, is there any ethical problem in reselling? I never even considred that there was. I am currently a 12pt Chef, and I purposefully undercut my competitors on ocassion to move my inventory. I see my stuff on other vendors and my cases broken up for sale on the Bazaar. I have absolutely no problem with this. I got my asking price, I don't care if it gets resold at a markup.

Am I nuts?

first resale is a personal opinion of doing business there is no right or wrong of it, everyone thinks differently and should not feel bad about doing so.

secondly banning is again personal..it is anyones right to ban anyone else from their own structures {providing it is not griefing which is another story}

so how does this help? it is up to you, take it and move on or dwell on it and ruin your gameplay.

you don't mind when folks resell your items, others mind when you resell theirs..it everyone right to think both ways.
You will always get both sides saying "I do it" and "you shouldnt do it"..but let's be realistic..it is your choice.
{and you will be the one to deal with the repercussions for taking either side..thats the game, nothing new there}

Thanks for your response. I am certainly not going to let anything ruin my game, but before today I never even imagined anyone ^would^ have a problem with reselling.

I've never understood the problem people have with others reselling their items.

It's not like you paid them less than they were expecting to get for the item.

And if their items are selling faster than they can keep them stocked, then it's their own fault for pricing their items at the wholesale level.

I wish more people would come and empty my vendors.

Buy all you want. I'll make more.

Sounds like a serious case of seller's remorse. As the Elyssa said, if they got what they asked for it then what's the issue? Its not like you ripped them off. You have no idea what incentive or reasons that person had for selling something at wholesale and its really none of your business. They might badly need some cash for something and be cutting the price to move it fast. Happens all the time, and the person selling decided to take a loss in potential income in exchange for fast income.

Now this is a bit different from the creeps that hang out at Eisley and talk noobs out of the BARC for 100k... that's just cruel.

RL reselling happens all the time and no one complains, its still the number one way of distributing goods. One person has invested time and energy learning what the true market value of things is, and/or knowing where to market something to get the best value. That person spent his or her time and energy to become proficent at this skill just like the person making the item spent time and energy becoming proficient at crafting. Both are worthy of their income. If someone wants to spend the time and energy to learn how to do both and thus earn money for both endevors, great. But if he or she hasn't gone thru marketing 101, why should they complain about someone else who has? Did the crafter dig all of the resources he used out of the ground himself? Most of the crafters I know buy at least some if not all of their resources. Should the miner thus complain that the crafter has taken his1 to 3 cpu resources and turned them into 5 to10 cpu end products? No, the crafter is worthy of his income for the work involved. The same is true for the marketer or merchant who resells the item.

Anyways, as was said before, everyone is free to think the way they think, although I think that trying to ruin someones auction because you made a mistake and sold something too cheep is just childish and reflects very poor manners. Its also called trolling.

Personally I dislike resellers and would ban them from my shop the instant they started buying everything up.

I spend a lot of time to stock my vendors with the best stuff I can craft. Being a shipwright, this takes considerable time and I pride myself on having everything someone needs to go from novice to master on my vendors. I get tells all the time asking about a specific component. I don't have to hesitate to say that yes I have that and give them the waypoint.

Secondly, yesthey are robbing me. Yes, I got the credits I wanted from the items thatthe resellerbought. But I don't get the credits from all of the other equipment that a pilot will buy, or the return business/recommendations. Most of my /tells are for advanced blasters. I send them the wp to my shop, and in about 1/2 hour I get the vendor sale complete email. And then I get 10more sale complete emailsfrom them as they pick up all of the other component typesand possibly a new ship as well.

I also get /tells, emailsand people visiting me saying thattheir friendrecommended my shop since I have everything they need.

All this comes about by having one item on a vendor that someone is looking for.

It isn't all about credits. It is also about having a good working relationship with the players that come into your shop and helping them fix up a starship or giving advice on how to do something in game to help them out.

Ask a reseller what the best loadout for a starship is, or how to mine ateroid resources. If they bother to answer you, they probably wont know. Ashipwright will. The same can be said for all of the other crafting professions as well.

I'm sure your going to get more posts from others saying reselling is good or bad, andall of the opinions are right. Itall depends on how you view the game.

If you have a problem with reselling, don't put things on vendors. It's that simple. Once you put something up on a vendor with a price, and someone pays that price, you have no say whatsoever in what they do with it. Them's the facts.

I appreciate Egrim's post. I was just looking for some non-emotional discussion about reselling. And I do see his point, even if I disagree. Every crafted item has the crafters name. This allows a customer to contact you. For every person looking for the custom experience you provide, there are 10 looking for a pure retail experience -- they know or think they know what they want, they want to buy it now, and are willing to pay a premium.

Generally speaking, if I resell an item its because I run across some dusty old vendor with ridiculous prices; I will throw that item up on my "miscellaneous" vendor and see if it sells. Having said this, I have had a couple of "pure" resale vendors. My current one is a weps vendor. I tend to buy crated "good not uber" quality items priced significantly under market and sell them for just a little below market, but I do buy some individual pieces. I have a big red READ THIS backpack that clearly explains that I am not the WS and encoraging peeps, if they like the wep they bought, to patronize the WS who made it. I think now i will go and put the wp's to the WS in the read-me. That's the best I can do.

There is nothing wrong with reselling. Reselling is what a merchant does.

I do it all the time, particularly when someone is selling a crackhead prices, way below what the resources would even bring if you sold them instead of the finished product. I have bought entire malls before. Once or twice I've had to drop a house as close as possible and run back and forth.

Fairly recently I cleaned somebody out and he had several toons picket my shop. I made macros telling people what a bad person I was and that they shouldn't shop at my store and started picketing myself, right alongside them. I don't think I've ever sold so much in one day.

Banning does nothing, either. Everyone has an alt, or a friend. I make a point to send in someone else to buy up the few people who have banned me for reselling.

Don't want people to buy up your stock? Raise your prices, or do private sales. Otherwise, if you sell below market and I see it, you're logging into an empty vendor.

Myself, if someone I buy from gets upset by it, fine, I will typically leave them alone. I remember back while my wife was grindingfor Chef, thatwe were trying to build business to max merchant faster and get people coming to her store for food, so I shopped around and bought from the best quality/best pricing I could find. One person was really below typical market value, and complained to me when I bought a large number of crates of a number of different foods. I explained what was going on and that my wife should be done with her grind within the month, and that we hoped she would give her a hand in this manner. Part of her complaint was that she felt the other chefs on the server were charging too much and as a result making it really hard for newer players to buy useful food items. I explained that we were also trying to keep prices down as much as possible, I think we were marking them up 25% which still was like 20% below a lot of other chefs... anyways, the end result was that she agreed to help us and did some special runs just for us. I think that we ended up with about a 2.5 million order from her. She left happy, we were happy and it was just as hoped for, it lead to my wife becoming very successful as a chef, actually she ended up being one of the top 4 or 5 chefs for the server. Between the end of January and the CU, she sold around 225 million, about a third of which was for someone else who was reselling it.

I guess what I am saying is that I don't see anything wrong with reselling, but I agree that if the crafter is particularly objecting to it that its best to just leave that person alone rather than grief them. There are plenty of other crafters out there, and who knows, they may end up bidding for your business. That's what happened with the wholesale business my wife had at the end. The reseller had a very well established market, right next to one of the best Doctor/Entertainer buffing businesses on the server, and she had to meet a certain quality level in her food and drinks, and the price point desired by the customer. Actually the pricing she sold for was like 20% off of her retail pricing so not a huge discount given that the customer was buying 40 cases of an item at a time. The customer resold for substantially more than she did in her store, but she was still happy because she got the volume she wanted at the time. The volume gave her the capital to get better and better resources, making it easier to make better food.

Anyways, as said, if approached from a co-operative standpoint I think there is plenty of room for resellers. If the crafter has a bird about it, leave them alone and go find another crafter to work with. On the otherhand, as a crafter, your reseller may turn out to be your best customer ever, and as a result, might just cause your business to boom, which is what happened with my wife's chef business.

Cheers,
