Yeah, I think less than one lot, if possible. Like 1/4 to 1/2 a lot. Even 10 signs aren't going to help a whole lot in a galaxy this big. Also, it opens up a new possible job for merchants: Large scale advertisers (if several banded together).

I like the idea of replacing the backpacks with something else. Are you guys ok with the limitation that your customers would have to "Read" the sign to get the full text? It would probably have to work like the city signs you see in static cities like Mos Eisley where you have a sign that is just "Sign" then you "Read" it from the radial menu and you see the text of the sign.

If the item name can be customized like a backpack (limited characters but changeable and colored), that would be a great start. If we can have MORE text accessible through a "read" function on the radial menu, that would be even better! This could be used for all sorts of things, not just merchant ads. This could be useful for posting event announcements, service-based business pricing (like Image Design), etc. It's got lots of potential.

Though before we get carried away with this idea, isn't a huge block of text a bit of a burden on the item database?

So, let me get this straight: To advance my character, I have to give up my current abilities?

I don't know for sure. I don't think text strings are the problem. The game handles them differently I believe than other item data. We'll know when they tell us the issues with this idea I guess

Well, as seems to be the case, it's all about the database in SWG.

Hopefully though, something with the same buffer that backpacks have for text as the Initial 'Sign' would be great. Then, as proposed, a larger buffer for the final 'Radial -> Read'. I think you'd have to make them cost some appreciable amount even for interior signs, so that there is a money sink for the impact on the DB.

Ides for signs:

  • interior signs with different looks (corkboard post-it look, metallic, diner/cafe menu look, etc)

  • exterior billboard looking things for advertising with differnt look (theatre billboard, political billboards etc)

  • key them to adversizing skilltree

  • have different sizes for different levels (or at least looks)

  • please have more than 4 styles

  • allow a color pallete if possible

an idea about holograms:

  • 'holograms' that are city placeable items that float at different heights, that advertize on both the overhead map (not planetary) and the player view. maybe have to associate the signs with a particular building

  • the holograms would be stylized icon-graphy of what you're offering at that location:

    • crosses for medical services

    • motar and pestle for Rx

    • blaster for weaponsshops

    • astromech symbol for droids

    • house for architecture

    • etc

  • have the holograms one level higher (adv 4) for overhead map, and level 2 for just local.

  • or maybe a master ability to register a building with multiple icons on the overhead and planetary map.

Just some ideas before the caffine kicks in.

Another nice feature is to have option 2 on the radial be Way Point. When the user clicks this the waypoint is added to the persons Datapad. Option 1 always needs to be Read. Option 3 should be edit.

Yeah, the radial definitely needs to be set to Radial 1 = Read, Radial 2 = Examine, Radial 3 = Set waypoint, Radial 4 = Management Interface or some such. There is nothing more irritating than the fact that the default for radials is examine for objects where examine is not a useful feature. Like harvesters and similar items. I want to double click on the things and be able to manage them, instead of having to fiddle with the radial menu (which gets bogged down/confused sometimes)

Any other advert sign ideas? Maybe a holographic model of dancers and such for cantinas, in the whispy blue-look projection from the movies?

The things I could do with my store if I could have a series of signs and placards describing things. *swoon*
