Thread: Mailing lists, Griefing?

Hi, I am a Master Merchant, and a Master Doc.

I own a shop the sells top of the line Buffs at very low prices.

I have a pretty high volume of customers and clear around 10 Million a day in sales.

Clearly, I have to craft pretty much constantly to meet the demand.

Whenever I restock the vendors I like to send out mails to all my customers.

I use "The Merchants Friend" Program to make a mailing list, and I have over 300 unique customers.

I send out 1 email once a week to inform customers of new products, or resources that I am buying. I find these emails to be very useful in getting sales, and recieving offers for resources.

Anyways, everytime I send out these emails I tend to get 1-3 mails back telling me that I am griefing them and that I will be banned for sending out Spam mail.

How should I deal with this?

Do not send them the mail

If folks tell you that the attention is unwanted, then don't do it.

If the rest have no complaint (and probly just delete it as it comes thru) do not be concerned to much.

Are those the same 3 guys every time?
If so, then just don't send them the mail.
Might be a bit more work, deleting their name from the list of receiptients, but its better that way i guess.

Or do you do that, and its 3 other guys the next time?

Generally its different people the next time, I'm just surprised that anyone gets so upset about hitting the delete button once.

The thing is these mails are the only way I can keep the prices down on my pharmecuticals. It is through these mails that I am able to buy large amounts of resources, and I am able to "Wal-martitize" my Buff sets, cutting the price and focus on volume.

Is there any way to permanently delete someone from the Merchants Friend program? That way I don't have to make a list of names to delete everyweek.

I use mail too for random stuff, I have a full out advertisment infact
but since I take orders thru my mail for Tailoring
getting emails stateing hey I restocked again likeI do weekly,
it isnt about the ease delete button it's about the annoyance of getting it to begin with.

Yes you can delete mails from Merchant friends.
But its complicated, since oyu have to delete the actual sales-mail from the mail-save folder, and if they should buy from you again at a later time they will be added again.

Oh one thing.
You could add to your email, that everyone who doesn't want to get those mails, can add you to their ignore-list, this will also prefent them from getting emails from you.
But of course that will also block everything else.

My only complaint about the Merchant's Friend is the lack ofa delete button. That would be so handy to have, but hey, it was a free program and beggers can't be choosers. heh

I notice alot of people who use mails for similar purposes add a note to the end of their email asking people if they wish to be removed from the mailing list. I would just add people to your friends list and create a group for mailing. That way you can delete people who don't want to recieve your mails any longer. Would probably be a big hastle adding them all at first but after that I doubt it would be too much of a problem.

Most of us get the heck spammed out of us in real life, we don't really want to be spammed in game. From one point of view it's only the delete button, from the other point of view it's opening up a real big, spammy can of worms.

I keep an eye out for people that shop a lot, and get to know what they like. When I get something in that might appeal to them, or do a big restock of something I know they often buy, I drop them a personal mail, or offer them a chance to lay dibs on some of the stuff before it hits my vendors, sometimes at a discounted price.

In the end, it's probably about the same amount of work to build up a rep for customer service doing that as it is to send an EMail to all customers.

Just my two creds. Your mileage my vary. Void in Vermont and where prohibited.

I make a point of only sending out thank you mails to customers who have frequented my vendors over the last 30 days.

You could easily do the same and add a line at the bottom asking them if they want to opt-in to a mail advertisement program and/or a resource buying list.

That way its completely voluntary. Your volume might drop as a result but at least your customers will have made the choice and be happier about receiving the mail.

Just like others have said, take them off your mailing list. Let them find out when your products have been re-stocked the hard way.

I am on the mailing list of other crafters myself...BE, weaponsmiths, and armorsmiths. It really good when they send out e-mails to thier mailing lists. I look at it this way, a mailing list lets your costumers know what is happening with your products. Better to do that, then get 1000 e-mails requesting products.

Think of it like a do not call list or a spam blocker filter in RL some folks just dont want any advertisements coming in period.

I understand why folks do it its a fast way to get a message out. But as a merchant I am already deleting 200-300 messages from sales a day I do need to go through the list to look for orders and offers from my rangers (I have them email me when I get a hide order) Any advert I might get would likely be deleted and never read.

Its akin to spam in the starports yes folks get the message about your shop but alot more just addignore you. does it work? Yep folks who are spamers can be millionares in a hurry but at the proce of annoying alot of other players. With email at least you can remove folks who dont want to be on your list.
