Thread: Why is spamming still allowed?
I don't like spammers that spam every 10-30 seconds. I spammed long ago and there was a direct relationship of spamming and getting more people to my vendors. I've not needed to spam for over a year now because my vendors are well known.
But spamming earns the spammer a lot more $$. Kinda like phone solicitors, people really do buy stuff from them.
I won't flame ya. I disagree that spamming should be removed...its a necessary thing for those who are just starting out. I think it would be nice that a spam timer could be implemented. Meaning you can't spam using a macro on maybe a 1-2 minute timer?
I am sure they have compelling rationale for spamming. I too used it once and it was very effective. Certain people get really bothered by it others don't. I have found it ver useful at times and I am glad it was there' I have also been very annoyed by some of the wort spammers out there.
My annoyance has no place in the decision to prohibit something, neither does yours. We all have choices. We could choose to put them on our ignore list. We could choose to use any of the other chat channels at our disposal. Rather than force someone else change thier behavior, you will find it easier to change yours.
If you seiously want the behavior changed, try sending a polite email to that person's guild leader. depending on just how noxious the spamming is pressure from a meaningful peer group will work. Either way, we all take part in a community and for it to function smoothly we all have to be less sensitive about stuff.
I usually use my barker droid, that "spams" in spatial every 60 secs. I agree that fast repeats are annoying. Although one thing ive heard quite often is "damn spammers are lagging me out" now that is not true. If you loaded into a mob of people, you would be laggin even if they were all completely silent, that tiny extra bit of data for the spatial chat is not going to make a difference - the info for player location, movent attributes, visuals etc makes spatials a drop in the bucket. Anyways i digress.
People who have new vendors need to spam. You mentioned galaxy-wide search, but the truthis avery large part of the playerbase does not understand that you can do a vendor location search. Forum readers here tend to be a bit better informed, but i run into experienced people every single day that didnt know about it. If youve got a new product, or something with a special price - how are you going to get people in the door? Forums only reach a small percentage of the playerbase, auction channel is largely ignored, and even for the people who do search the bazaar, with common items, your goods might be pages past their patience to look.

The bottom line is, spamming works. Until that changes (never) then people will continue to do it. Just look at the spam email/junk mail industry. It is a multi-BILLION dollar industry. Something like that doesn't just go away overnight. I, for one, would LOVE to see an effective, less intrusive form of in-game advertising put into place...something like bill-boards, or yellow pages type directories.
As for myself, I have never spammed in order to sell my wares, no need to. However, I have spammed when I needed to PURCHASE something. I consider this to be nobler (barely) than sell-spam, because I am providing an opportunity for someone to offload their items in-game without having to spend a lot of time looking for a vendor.
Ok.. I didn't ask why people still spam. I asked why it is still allowed. Two completely different questions.
Perhaps I should have spammed my question a few times and then maybe ya'll would have actually responded to what I said and not what you assumed I said. ![]()

Can you think of any decent solution to prohibit spamming while still allowing people to use spatial? Well, that's why.
However, the game offers you a mechanism to filter out spammers... it's called the ignore list. Use it liberally and soon you'll get little spam.

yeah, but my computer cries every time I access my ignore list (via ctrl-p or adding someone on). I've cleaned it out before too...
