Thread: Keep merchant as a profession, but not required to have vendors.

Sounds good.
Now I want the following, too:
- The ability to wield a Lightsaber and Force powers without becoming a Jedi.
- The ability to throw poisons (good ones!) without having to grind Combat Medic.
- The ability to buff myself and heal my wounds without having to grind Doctor.
- The ability to enhance myself through meditation without havingto grind TKA.
- The ability to spam Eyeshot without having to grind Bounty Hunter.
- And the ability to Conceal Shot with a T-21 without having to grind Rifleman.
When I can do all that as a Master Weaponsmith / Master Artisan / Master Merchant, you can have your vendor.
That is not what I meant, and if you read my post carefully you will see that. And for the record, I'm a MASTER MERCHANT.

This stupid arguement is getting very old. Non-merchants are not asking to do all the skilled abilities of merchant, just to be able to use a simple vendor that would allow the sale of items they may loot or craft and as a place where people can drop stuff off for them. They still will not have the ability to advertise, or lower maintenence costs, or place vendors anywhere other than a single vendor in their house.
I mean think about your arguement for a minute. By your reasoning a CH should be able to do all those things just because there are non-CH pets. Or any combat profession should be able to do them because you can use all of their weapons even if you are not certed. No one is asking for everything but there are some things that every toon should be able to do at least at a limited level.
- Earn Artisan Business III
- Hire a Merchant to manage a vendor for you
Coincidentally, those are also the only reasonable ways for a non-Merchant to have vendors in a game that is built on the idea of co-dependency.
Yes, my example was extreme. What YOU are are really saying is closer to the equivalent of giving me all weapon certs for 0030 (pick a branch) ofany one novicecombat class, without earning that experience or spending those skill credits. When that happens, you can have your free vendor.
How 'bout that?

Or how about removing the Master Rifleman profession and put all the skills in theRifle tree of Marksman?

Fixing vendor "poaching" would have been a good idea in the SWG beta, but not a year after release.

See, now that wouldn't work. Those are meaningful professions that people actually enjoy.

Should we also get rid of Dancers, Image Designers, and Musicians because "people don't enjoy" them?
Who are YOU to say people don't enjoy Merchant and that it's worth getting rid of?
Yeah, fixing bugs - ALL the bugs - would have been nice back in Beta instead of now. Adjusting the EULA to preclude AFK play would have been nice back then, instead of nerfing macros now. Scaling back Creature Handlers could also have been done in Beta instead of a few months into retail. The Combat Balance? Beta. GCW fixes? It's betta in Beta.
Maybe this is your first MMOG. Get used to nerfs coming down the pike. They don't stop once the devs get rolling on them.
People do.

Don't patronize me please.

The entire SWG economy depends on vendors. Letting players have vendors for a year, then suddenly changing things so that those who want to keep them must drop their other professions to get one they don't want, is not a good idea.
Doing this, but at the same time moving all merchant skills to the artisan business tree would be a compromise I think most people could accept.

Then stop whining?

Nerfs are seldom a good idea, most especially when the devsneglect toinform the players WHY they're happening.
However, taking vendors away from those without the skills to run them really isn't so much a nerf as it is fixing an oversight. What if people could throw Master CM level poisons after dropping all of CM? If they could effectively Eyeshot after dropping BH? If they could control a full-grown Rancor (or worse) after dropping Creature Handler? Would you stand for all of those things continuing, just because they lasted in retail for some amount of time? Would that be a good thing for the game?

And when they nerf Combat Medic, would it be acceptable to people to move all those skills into the Medic Pharmacology tree? When they nerfed Creature Handler, should they have moved all those skills into the Scout Harvesting branch?

Not very good examples, really. The SWG economy isn't built around eyeshot and rancors.

If they could have always used combat medic skills, and their other professions could not function without those skills, then yes. But again, not very good exemplification I think.
