Thread: POLL: Will you charge for healing?
I think it's a simple matter of economics. The SWG universe is not a whole lot unlike the RW universe; technology aside. It's made up of people who will act and interact like regular people. You cannot get along in this universe w/o some credits and/or resources. If you try, you will get no where fast. Now I have read all of these responses up to here and, frankly, am not surprised by what I see. You have the socialists, or charity givers, who refuse to ask for credits and think that all money is evil. They will shrivel up and change professions before long so nothing to worry about there. You have the die-hard capitalists who wont even look at you sideways without giving you and invoice. They charge for everything under the sun and will rapidly run out of customers and friends before long. Then you have everyone else. Those who are in it for the fun and love the idea of working and cohabitating in a virtual universe with a functional economy. They don't like demanding payment, but find it hard not too because they keep having to buy resources and items.
So I have a feeling that this will eventually work itself out through the normal course of doing business in the SWG. Those that can't hack it or find a nice medium in dealing with patients and it's economics will move on to other professions. Medics are indeed in short supply and I think the rest of the player base will recognize this at some point. I think the Medic field needs to have some adjustments and there is another post on here dealing with that. I personally think it would be good for the medics to band together locally or on a planetary level to help in passing along information, getting together those whoneed training and those who can provide it, and helping in finding resources and needed supplies. As far as charging goes, I personally constantly relay to those I'm treating and the other medics around me how expensive the profession is at the moment. We also discuss how tough the economy is right now anyway with the game just starting out. I had a hard time getting by at first, but the demand eventually helped bring in some good tips for me just last night.
My point is you have to strike a balance. SWG is a universe with a living, breathing economy that relies solely on it's player base. Regardless of what profession your in or how 'noble' you think it should be, if you can't make a living in it, you'll move on and a shortage will be created. The economy will take care of itself. There will always be a need for medical professionals in this universe and as the economy improves, so will our small lot. Perhaps it would help motivate others more to explain to them that their tips are not for booz and women, but that their contributions will help to improve the medical field by providing needed medicines and training to help enable our small group to better serve them. It's an investment in their future. Look at it like that.
I will charge when i get into the higher wound packs. But I will only charge in the med center. not while grouping.
What am I charging for?
The Multitude of resources it takes to make higher end stim packs and wound packs, and the time it takes to gather the resources and craft them.

This isn't EQ where I start off as a cleric and get my healing spells for little to nothing. There is a huge time sync involved with being a medic in this game.
Well Ive been having pretty good luck. Medics on Tat/Tarq have been telling the injured how much the healing process would cost. For example someone comes in with 300 (150/h 150/a)pts of damage. Well then the medics charge 300. 1c per pnt does not seem outragous. This way the patient knows exactly how much it costs and can say well can you heal just my action points for 150. The players seem to be pretty receptive. Im definitely in favor of having a "uniform cost" that all medics would charge
Currently I'm a Novice Medic considering being a Combat Medic, due to inherant importance in a group and it feels good when I heal someone who needs it. But I will only heal for free if I'm grouped or I also heal the entertainers in the cantina for free...cause we basically feed each other exp. It's only right for medics to be paid just like an architect selling a deed. We want gear, homes, and vehicles just as everyone else.
I SAY UNIONIZE ON YOUR SERVER.
I know this would be difficult and if I make it into the PA I want I wouldn't charge guild members. But we need to at least establish 1/wound to 2/wound ratio as a given or common knowledge....and someone is feeling extra appreciative they will tip more.
About 50% of the people I treat tip. Some tip very generously. It evens out. At any time I can take missions to suplement the cash flow. When harvesting resources I keep some for myself and sell some on the bazaar.
I have noticed that people are getting better about tipping. Maybe it's just because I am a higher level now or maybe they are realizing what it costs to be a medic.
didn't get to read them all, have to go to work...
If i am on a starting planet in the MC i do not charge. If i'm on Lok or another rock and people want me to heal them i ask for 500 up front, regardless of wounds. I just started this regiment last night and made a couple k while waiting for my friends to arrive :-)
I dont charge upfront....usually when im done healing the person they tip me and if they dont...ohh well
I usually rely on the good nature of others for any compensation, however in the case of one player I expected payment up front. Now I would have healed him but he decided to pick up on in a cantina.
I flatlyrefused his advances, he punches me in the face!!! Ok now Im peeved! I challenge him to a duel and he refuses saying He would kill me and he didnt want to do that. I laughed and went back to chatting with a friend.
The player stated that he was going to get healed at med center and the KorVella med center was empty(I was there right before the cantine) Well I let him get there and then come in. He asks for a heal and I had to say 'You'll need to pay up front. 400creds' He wasnt that happpy but he wasnt in the shape to argue. I healled his 300+ wounds and said "I would have healed you without asking for creds up front but you punched me in the face, thats what you get for hitting ppl you dont know'
Sorry but I charge if your really aggresive about getting healed or if you punch me in the face
Right now I avoid the med centers unless I see a fellow Imperial or guild member in there, which I am normally more than willing to heal as I like to roleplay my character as an upstanding member of the Empire. If I get tipped I appreciate it and thank the tippers no matter how large or small the tip is. I have given up on healing "neutrals" as most of the time I won't recieve a tip from them in any form. Granted there are neutrals that do tip well and even a few rebels who will tip me, but they are in short supply lately. I never ask for payment though the thought has crossed my mind when I get messaged to run to a med center to heal people that don't tip me after I run a good ways to get to them.
Honestly I'm now gaining all my XP by helping the novice marksmen and low level elite combat profession members of my guild. I gain xp nearly twice as fast as I heal them while a whole lair of Krevols attacks them.
