Thread: POLL: Will you charge for healing?
Yup.. so long as I'm in a medical center (assuming you can find me in one at all) I'll be charging for healing unless its a PA member or friend.
It costs waaaaay too much to heal someone in terms of resources and training. Resources take time to sample or credits to buy; a situation excerbated by the specific qualities needed in a resource by medics. Training (esp with the shortage of medics around) is almost a guaraunteed expense of leveling unlike the other more popular skill trees that have numerous other players from which to learn.
The only healings I'll be doing for free are damage if in the field with a hunting party (wounds not needed since camps currently take care of that) or if I'm just killing time and someone needs healing in a medical center, I may use /tendwound as it costs nothing more than a few minutes of my time. Hehe but don't expect anyone except a novice medic to heal more that a few (less than 20 wounds) points as the timer and down time will just eat into time needed to sample more resources for paying customers and skilling.
Just as an aside, I healed peeps with 2/3s wounds for free all the time in beta. I never charged for training, resources or reducing players downtime. Beta was the time for that approach... now its release
Well i have been in game for 2 days now and i havent healed many people without gettin paid. For those of you that say i'm not gettin xp,,i have all my level 2 skills done and part of level 3.
Yesterday we had a great system,,3 of us in med center,,i lead they followed. We all charged and since we were grouped communication was easy, Basically i was the highest med there so when i needed training,,everyone chipped it and i trained them for free in return.
I walked out last night with over 5k in my pocket and lots of resources. Everyone won
I've been healing in my local med center for two days now. I trained in medic only to help out some of the poor souls I saw there who needed healing without a medic anywhere to be found. Many had three almost completely black bars. I've healedandI've roleplayed. I'm listed as a newbie helper so I also teach the players that come to be healed about tons of stuff. Everyone thanks me heartily and call me a saint. I tended the wounds of one player for two+ hours straight since I didnt have any meds. I've never received a tip once. I'vecasually mentioned how much it costs to be a medic. Still nothing. One of the players even mentioned today that everyone should tip the medics when they get healed. I still didn't get a tip (not even from the player who suggested it) I didn't mind it so much until Istarted thinking of switching profs to medic since there is such a need on Gorath, but I don't think I can afford itwithout any tips.
I think I made up my mind about it today. I got killed by some mad acololytes(right as I logged in)and couldn't retrieve my corpse alone. I asked many of the players that I had healed repeatedly over the past two days to help me. None would. Guess I'm gonna start charging now!
Now in business there is also a time value to work. As in what else could you be getting paid for doing. A newbie can run some delivery missions that require no special skills or training and make good money if you got a system (ie taking two jobs to the same city). So, to be effective as a medic, I shoube making the same if not more than someone doing delivery missions.
I agree with the 1 cred per wound ratio but I don't mind taking it in trade, ie goods. I don't plan on making a huge profit at this but positive cash flow is nice.
Now, all we have to do is unionize to spread the word. Without medics, all the gunners out there can just sit on their keister and see how long it takes. Which brings back to the time is money concept. If it tskes them an extra half hour to heal without help, you have to wonder what they could be doing with that time and how much money they could make if they weren't stuck in a hospital.
First of all, medics have it bad... healing other people gives us battle fatigues and mind wounds which need to be healed by entertainers who also need to be tipped.
It is NOT fun stuck in a hospital with an extremely wounded patient for hours at a time... and you don't always have something to say to him/her. After each heal, I have to wait for my mind to come back. I have literally sat in a med center for hours and not get tipped!! XP's come very slowly for medics... it's not like going out and shooting something dead and you get hundreds of XP's.
As for asking a price up front... I am soo not for that. I think people should have the courtesy to know that they should tip. I understand that some have more credits than others, so it is up to him/her how much they are capable or willing to tip. If you have a bunch of wounds, for heaven's sake, tip accordingly. The sad truth is... there aren't many medics out there, so people need to make it as attractive as possible for people to go into this field and not to drive them out.
Good luck, trying to control markets has been tried in about ever area of human endevor and fails everytime.
As for paying, I just inform the client their going to be paying for the cost of the wound pack, which is generally about 150 credits from thebazaar
I don't charge for healing. But I do remind folks that tipping is more liekly to get you healed next. And I do ask for tips when I am about to level up, telling everyone that it means I can then heal them faster/better in the future.
Well its day 2 on Flurry and I've been walking past the med centers... they often have a number of extremely wounded players and there is one or two novice medics running around trying to heal 2/3 wounds. That is the rare situation actually.... more often the wounded players are just sitting and calling for help or have already gone afk.
Medics are in short supply and for every player that takes up novice medic to try and avoid offering payment, I suspect they just as quickly realize that A level meds and /tendwound are more or less worthless against heavy wound damage.
I'm wondering if this is hurting the game at all. I mean I see a lot of players making their way through tradeskills and combat and dabbling to reduce their dependancies but even with new blood (non-beta testers) coming in and seeing the "opportunity" for lots xp in the med centers; there is still a lack of upper level medics.
I've turned off my titles and unless the player is from beta and recognizes my name, they would never know I was a medic. I've basically been hiding taking PA members out to camps or moving to the empty part of the med centers to drop a couple of Wound-B and then run off before I'm noticed an swamped. Why all the hiding and subterfuge?
Simple, I'm really tired of players *expecting* me to heal. Even if I say I have something else to do, I get tells about why can't come heal them now? Worse off if I do drop a heal on them they just sit quietly, thank me and walk off. After that happened twice I decided to stop even giving other players a chance to notice that a medic was available....
I'm really not sure how I feel about this since it seems silly to be hiding the major reason I'm playing this game - to be a good healer but then again the cons still seem to really outweigh the pros of letting anyone know.
well, as I have said in other posts...I did not become a healer to make money. I am in this profession to help those in need...and I will NEVER, EVER refuse healing to those that need it...especially over money.
True, some patients can be ungrateful and demanding...but I help them anyway. It's what I do. If I wanted to make moneyI would go into another profession. Personally, I don't think much of medics that require payment for healing...but then I don't think much of money. I feel the same way about those that try to charge for training. I always offer my medical skills and training for free and thank those who are kind enough to tip. But I never have hard feelings towards those that do not tip me...I DO, however think little of those that ask me to pay for training, or those that charge fees to their patients.
I do not run a business...I am a healer. If I have to take a second job to fund my research or medical supplies, then so be it...but I will never charge mandatory fees to patients.
