I have seen a thread recently about how some guy on tc or was it back on beta , flew a tie fighter in a planets atmosphere , so it is possible then..........I dont see why they cant code in new version s of land based speeders , jig the graphice to make em look like t16 skyhoppers an the ole reb speeders ( and others hopefully), an have em fly higher and faster then speeder bikes an land speeders , surely this would use practically the same coding they have ingame now , just different graphice and altitude/speeds , but can you imagine , what an addition it would be!?!?! (dreams)
................thoughts??

my speeder lags alot. I think its possible someday but not currently. Well possible, but I doubt it would be very smooth until the next better CPU or w/ecomes out. I like the idea tho to be able to fly your ship out to your house.

One thing that could be done is have the "atmopshere" in a different "zone". So you'd load into it from space and the atmposhere would basically be like that (like space), but with different backgrounds. Above you would be space and below you you could see the planet, buildings, and things like that. If you went up high enough, you'd get a message box asking if you wished to go into space. If you went low enough, you'd get a message asking if you'd like to land in the nearest city.
Of course, people wouldn't be able to see your ship flying up in the air, nor would you be able to see people on the ground. But this would allow people to fly in the atmosphere.

I like that idea, Zeon, because it's somewhat doable. It still seems like would take some work to do right, because I think the various atmospheric conditions would effect the physics of flight compared to space (wind drag, thermal layers, and so on)

the idea of atmospheric flight is probably one of the best things that could happen to the game. get in trouble, call in a airstrike or conduct a raid using a MP ship loaded with rebs or imps. it'd give a refreshing new way of looking at the game and is definately something i'd like to see, doesn't matter how long. just as long theres somebody working on it.

a big problem with atmospheric flight would be lag, but some things can be done to reduce lag for people flying such as (while piloting): don't render any 2D ground objects, don't render any 3D ground objects like small trees and rocks (only do large objects that we could fly into), restrict flight over large NPC cities (or make it so you have to fly at a very high altitude so most things aren't rendered), use low grade rendering of all ground objects (including players) while flying. thats just a brief list but basically they need to reduce the amount of things that are rendered on the ground while you are flying.

Anarchy Online has aircraft, among other ways to fly and it's almost 5 years old. No reason why SWG cannot do it.

It would be hard to combine atmospheric flights for ships because ships are all armed and the combat system is so entirely different than the ground trying to merge it would be very hard. Though, if it was doable it would make Krayt hunting in a Krayt rather interesting...

To make this feasible, hear these ideas. First, call the starfighter from the DP like a vehicle. Second, board it with the radial menu. Immediately, via "autopiltot,"it warps to an altitude which the ground graphics aren't rendered. Then the flight would be like JTL. When finished, taget a nearby starport city and type /land and be at the terminal. Otherwise, type /land andywhere and it will immediately ground the craft. Then it could be stored. I love fast transportation.

Landing anywhere on a planet except a Starport is 'Illegal", anyone atempting to land anywhere on a planet except a legal starport will concidered apirateand shot down. You will never be able to use starships against ground targets, talk about insta-death for a group of 30, the damage is way to great.I don't ever see any flightverses ground targets ever in game, way back when, you could fire your blaster from your speeder. It was nerfed because pep's were just rideingaround "kiteing" mobs, without any effort or takeing very little damage.

I dont think those things exist in the SW universe. Mostly because most of the EU books didnt mention it, so SOE could just skip it and just copy the movement from jtl now.

They do exist. Read an EU book...preferably one about pilots. TIE fighters are crap at yawing in an atmosphere, because of their wings. It says that. X-Wing series by Michael Stackpole and Aaron Alliston is pretty good for stuff about pilots...'bout Rogue Squadron, and later Wraith Squadron. They're my favorite books. Lol.
