Thread: Who here is a veteran from TIE Fighter (the game, not the ship)?

Anyone remember that game? One of the best damn Star Wars games of all time... hell, my JtL keymap is configured to look exactly like the old TIE Fighter one. And yet, each time I play JtL and compare it with TIE fighter... something just seems to be missing... anyone else here a vet from the old days?

I am! Finest game from the 386/486 era.

I feel that what it's missing is music... especially the dynamic, exciting music that TIE Fighter offered that changed for every battle conditionon the fly. I feel the "collector's edition" was a letdown because the excellent MIDI done by the "Fat Man" was removed and choppy, grainy orchestral bits were put in its place.

But yes, JTL could use a lot more music. And instanced space sectors to permit complicated missions like the ones TIE fighter offered.

Ah yes, the music, that's probably part of what I'm missing. I remember feeling my heart start thumping whenever a Rebel or Neutral Capitol ship entered the area.

And the victory music... made the Imperial theme sound heroic. That was a hell of a shock.

Not to mention the Rebel theme sounded ominous and creepy. Hehe!

Man... I need to find a site with that music on it... I think I still have the old Floppies kicking around somewhere, but I doubt anything will run them anymore. That and I've had it trying to wrestle with antique programs to get them to work on my comp. Tried installing Kings Quest VI the other day... man, what a nightmare >_<

I'm an X-Wing and TIE Fighter veteran...in fact, I've been playing through TIE Fighter again...I'm on the last TOD.

Loved Tie Fighter, and its expansion Defender of the Empire.

That game for me, forever left its mark. Xwing Vs Tie fighter did some damage too

I would soooo love a modernized version of Tie Fighter.. really.. really would.

The TIE and X-Wing series rocked. Not having a new version of those was my main reason for getting SWG and JTL.Lost coutless hours of my life to both of those series.

Both X-wing and Tie fighter are the reason I am playing SWG today. I loved those games so hard, I don't recall caring whether I got sleep or not. I felt no pain, only duty (or compulsion, something like that).

When I first played SWGI couldn't stand it.. a year or so later, JTL was released and I thought it would be a reasonable approximation of my old fav. Well, it wasn't but its ok when not compared to its predecessors. Ironically, I got hookedon crafting (go figure) and hardly go into space anymore.

Anyhoooo... I would love a new version of Tie fighter. Heck I wouldn't even mind X-wing. Anyone have a magic lamp?

I think the main problem with JTL is the absense of capital ships. The missions talk about going somewhere and stopping some major attack but all we ever see is a few waves of fighters. Nothing that approaches epic. At most we run into a gunship with a fighter escort and may have a few friendlies to help us out.

Capital ships are what is missing imo. Without fleets of huge ships duking it out while you scream around after fighters it just doesn't capture the feel. I hope JTL will have this content added soon as without it the feeling of being part of the SW universe isn't there.

I loved that game. I also played X-Wing vs Tie fighter a lot as well. And thats what I was dreaming/expecting out of the JTL, but it didnt happen. SOE should really look at this game and improve how space combat and environment is supposed to be done!

-Capital Ships

-Continuity (Ties dont have shields but are still very effective ships)

-music

-shields actually hold against PVP ships to allow for longevity in combat

-options to configure shields/speed/whatever (soo much to change on your own style of playing)

-missils are effective but not the end all (can still escape and shoot them without chaffs) (can also lock onto them)

-Have actual big battles and objectives

-large amounts of npc waves of ships where they dont all just go after one real player (also have support npc)

-more differences between ships (less concentration on components and more on the actual ship/player experience)

-easier to configure and play just like the old space games when dealing with controls/setup

Thats what needs to be improved upon, not to mention more pvp zones and such. But since the JTL is out, they wont even bother with it for another year or so besides adding a few lame missions and ships that arnt enough to make jtl worth it.
