Thread: The DEFINITATIVE PvP vs PvE Discussion Thread, including a summary of what's been said so far
Think of the various pilot professions as professions, rather than factions. Imperial is a faction, "Imperial Navy Pilot" is a profession. There are restrictions which prevent an overt or covert factioned player from being a pilot for "the enemy", but that's it. So, for example, you can be an Imperial Navy Pilot without being "an Imperial".
If you are an Imperial player (overt or covert):
you cannot be a Rebel Alliance Pilot.
you can be an Imperial Navy Pilot (without going overt)
you can be a Privateer
If you are a Rebel player (overt or covert)
you cannot be an Imperial Navy Pilot.
you can be a Rebel Alliance Pilot
you can be a Privateer
If you are a neutral player
You can be an Imperial Navy Pilot
You can be a Rebel Alliance Pilot
You can be a Privateer
The reverse is also true, so if you are an Imperial Navy Pilot and you go talk to a Rebel Recruiter, he's not going to let you become a Rebel (neither overt nor covert), and vice versa, until you give up all your Imperial Pilot skills.
In space, there are no TEF's. If you are a declared overt Rebel, for example, then you can PvP with declared overt Imperials, and vice versa (note that the declared Imperial Player might be a Privateer. And for that matter, you might be a Privateer, too). If you aren't overt, then you can't PvP (except *mumble mumble mumble*).
If you are a Rebel Alliance Pilot and you shoot an NPC TIE-Fighter, then you don't suddenly become open to PvP from Imperial Navy Pilots, not even if they are also declared overt Imperial players. So space is much more like a PvP 'switch'. If you want to PvP, go overt. If you don't want to, then don't go overt, and that's pretty much it.
There is, essentially, no such thing as 'covert' in space.
The skills in the professions grant certifications to the various ships, so as a Privateer Pilot you won't be flying a TIE-Fighter, and as an Imperial Pilot you won't be flying an X-Wing, and neither Imperial nor Rebel pilots can fly the beautiful Hutt ships. However, as per above, you can be a neutral and join the Imperial Navy, fly a TIE-Fighter, even though you aren't covert or overt yourself.
Additionally, some zones will be 100% PvP all the time regardless of your overt/covert/TEF status. So if you find yourself in one of these zones, you're a target whether you like it or not.
So, if this turns out to be true (and we have no reason to believe otherwise), there are going to be one or more zones that will be a free for all.
Q) Are PvP "wild zones" free for all? Could I attack people on the same faction or just opposite factions?
A) Not really known, although the assumption is that you can only attack people on the opposite side. I'm not sure how neutrals would fit into that though.
Q) So if you're not safe from PvE, then how is PvP any different?
A) That is a common argument. Hopefully people might try PvP and see that it indeed is the case. However, it's their decision to make. As long as people aren't exploiting PvE, I know that I can deal with it.
Q) But I hear all PvP people are jerks? Is that true?
A) Some are, just as some PvE people are jerks. There really is a deft of PvP in the ground right now because of the state of the system, and thatkeeps a lot of people who would like to try it (ie, me) from doing it.
So that's what we know. Some is speculative but I tried to compile everything that's been confirmed (or partially confirmed) into a easy to read Q&A format. Now discuss. Keep it civil, keep it clean, andplease refrain from "PvE are whiners / PvP are griefer cheater jerks" in this thread.

Excellent thread.
My big issue with this thing is that the recent post makes it sound like you have to be overt on the ground to PVP in space. That seems ludicrous to me. I am not a ground PVP person since I am not into templates of the month. However, I would like to PVP in space where it is twitch based.
Overt/Covert in space should have nothing to do with overt/covert on the ground. If I am a neutral who joins the Imperial Navy, I should be able to go overt in space and PVP in space. The current quote does not make this possible.
Hopefully, the gentleman misspoke, or there will be a way to go overt/covert in space. With the system as is, I will have to find a recruiter, go overt, then safely get into a starport and get into space to PVP. I can see it now, every uber PVPer standing within 50m of the starport entrance whacking all of us trying to get into space.
I second the excellent thread part. 5 stars for that ![]()
Also, Mkappus is right...with the current PVP state on ground, I hope we dont have to declare planetside...imagine the griefing that *CAN* erupt from that. Starport getting camped and the like.
I sincerely hope the devs will find a way to let us take off safely. Otherwise those who want to try pvp will re-think that decision quite fast.

Number 71:
71. Is there a possibility of having the two deep-space sectors be free-for-all zones for wild fights and spatial hair balls? Nothing like a cloud of fireflies lighting up space when you hyperjump into the sector.
Nope, same rules apply here that they do in normal sectors.

I can't read.
Apparently you can NOT be both a factional and neutral (privateer) pilot. See also, the JTL unofficial FAQ:

Hi, yes you can read
....in TH's Post on page 8 you can find the following:
[EDIT] because you pasted the info on your first post yourself. ![]()
So you *can* be a privateer and imp. ![]()

See, that's what I'm confused about. From TH's post, it's obviously possible to pick either profession. I just don't know whether you can be in both. The unofficial FAQ says no, you can't be in both at the same time. However, I don't know where they got that information from and when in the development they got it. Hopefully we'll get some further clarification from the devs soon.
I looked it up just once more.
Although as a neutral *faction* player you can fly any ship and choose any piloting profession, you can just choose one of those professions at a time. The last blue paragraph in TH's post says that an imp pilot for instance can not fly either a reb nor a hutt ship. Same goes for rebel pilots who can not fly an imp or hutt ship. And finally a privateer can only fly hutt ships...no imp or reb ships. So....Profession (Piloting trees) do dependon your faction to a small degree (imps can not become rebel pilots) but the ships you can fly fully depend on your chosen profession.
Yes, it's a bit confusing. ![]()
As for being able to choose two professions (ie. imp and privateer) I wasnt able to find information on that either. ![]()
