Have been playing JTL for a while using the mouse and I was thinking about buying a joystick but I have never used one before. Anyone got a good suggestion for an affordable one that is compatible with SWG? thanks.

Saitek are pretty good, Logitech is the best known brand these days but have some quality issues lately

Simple

Cheap

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro

You will need to recalibrate once in a while

Otherwise it's pretty good

Honestly, Its prefrence though

Sticks that other people swear by (Saitek) Just feel all "Wrong" in my hand...

Just go to the store and find one that feels right

Make sure it has Throttle and rudder...

and go

- When Sony and Lucas set out, we said, 'How can we do this and not make another EQ?' We didn't want it to be all about Luke, or combat, or lock our players into a class. So we created a system that would allow players to switch professions during the game, and there would be a lot of gameplay around making that change. If you want to go from architect to scout we've created a system to make that happen."

I'm starting to think we should all just make a standard reply to this question that either gives our answer, or refers to one of the other 5 daily joystick questions.

No offense man, but there are countless posts asking exactly the same thing.

And in answer to your question, no, I know none that are affordable and good. My suggestion is the $80-$100 Saitek X52. Logitech is affordable but crappy due to decalibration issues. Microsoft stopped making the great Sidewinder line. Thrustmaster usually does't have rudder on the stick.

Best joystick I have used to date, CH F-16 Fighter stick. I use rudder pedals because I like them more and they are more precise then joysticks with twist.
The one I am using now are almost 12 years old and still as good as the day they were bought.

I won two PvP duels in a row using nothing more than a Microsoft Sidewinder. I config the 7 & 8 buttons to rolling, the 3 to Booster, the 4 to Missile and the 2 to Target Under Reticle. One hand on the joystick itself and the other hand stabalizing it, using my left thumb for throttle control. I can't over emphasize how important real-time throttle control is, because most ships don't turn as well at full speed (most work best in the 50% to 75% range). Make a firing pass, cut speed and spin, then throttle back to full once your sights are on their tail. This has one trick wins me more dogfights than anything else.

Oh, and the thing is USB capable and will probably cost you less than $10 these days. Although you may want to get one with a rotatable joystick and link your roll to that (easier that way). You'll notice that ships often have different turn rates per axis of movement, and sometimes rolling your ship a certain way will keep you on their tail when the wrong angle would let them slip away.

Thanks for the input, now that I have time to read the rest of the forums I see this was a much asked question. Sorry, just needed a quick answer. Can't do much research at work with the boss on the warpath. Thanks for the input.

I have one of these and overall it's satisfactory... but how do I recalibrate it? There's no calibration routine in Control Panel/Game Controllers as there was with my previous (Sidewinder) stick. All I see is a screen where you can check and make sure all the buttons and such are working, but nothing like setting the center and all that.

I like the stick but it has a tendency to pull to one side. Normally I'd be able to adjust that or compensate for it but I just can't find where or how.

MS Force Feedback is the best ive used so far. Its heavey at the base so you can tweek the stick and not tip it over. Plenty of buttons. One bad thing MS is no longer in the joystick buisness. Ebay is the way to go.

In an interview with the New York Times, Nancy MacIntyre, senior director for SWG at LucasArts states, “We wanted more instant gratification: kill, get treasure, repeat. We needed to give people more of an opportunity to be a part of what they have seen in the movies rather than something they had created themselves."

I use a controller, similar to the PS2's controller, and it is very good. Joysticks are more realistic, but less buttons, and with all the features on JTL, you want plenty of buttons. This controller is basically a PS2 controller for the ppc, I use it and it is very good, and affordable. There are several different controllers from Logitech, all very good, I use the Logitech Dual Action Gamepad for JTL and my FPS's.There are also several joysticks from Logitech, I would check Logitech.com for more information. The controller is$25-30. What is recalibration?

Basically over time, the joystick becomes off-center and out of alignment, much like the wheels on a car. So basically, you need to run through a routine so that the operating system recognizes your pattern of use and where the centerpoint and limits should be in the stick's current condition.

The Logitech stick I use has twelve buttons, that's plenty.

The day I gave up the joystick and started using the mouse for spacecraft control, JTL combat actually became fun. I'll never go back to a joystick for JTL.
