Thread: What are some features from X-Wing Alliance you wish they had implemented in JTL?

These are some of mine



  • Multi-player ships had some sort of jamming beacon

  • You would appear to launch from a hangar, or in this game's case you would launch from the Starport hangar

  • the many, many ship variations

  • music even not while in combat, could be toggled on or off- i especially liked the music that was playing when you were in your room

  • i know it's not possible but i liked it how you could fly everywhere with no boundary restrictions but the zones in this game seem very small and confined, almost claustraphobic to a point

  • a talking droid that says witty and snide remarks during your missions

  • mission overviews of your objectives

  • hire some voice actors!

  • a warning indicator that tells you you're being painted a target for a missile and giving you time to react before they launch it

  • assaults on key military installations, or capitol ships

  • more interesting mission objectives like destroy all probe droids that are attempting to hyper out of the area

  • flight simulators? could be instanced missions for things like races that you could invite anyone in your group into, or even missions like destroy the Death Star for the Rebels, and defend the Death Star for Imperials


  • group formation, the group leader could assign objectives easier for the group to read as a system message for something like Cover me, you 2 destroy their turrets, the rest will disable the ship, instead of having to type it out



just throwing some ideas around for fun

Im so tired of people bitching about ship variations. There are 25 pilotable ships in the game and they are customizable. XWA doesnt have that. You definetly didnt FLY 25 ships in XWA unless you were doing skirmishes.

Otherwise interesting suggestions

X-Wing Alliance was one of the only SW space sims I didn't play. X-Wing and Tie Fighter were 2 of my favorite games of all time. I have a question though, if I bought a copy of XWA today, would it run on my computer? I know it was designed for Win95/98 machines with a 200MHz CPU and 32MB of RAM, but does it even play on today's machines?

I have the same problem. sucks because XWA is one of my fave games ever. I just love SW flightsims. JTL should be arriving tomorrow.....hehehe

I forget where it is, but do a Google search for the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Project.


There are more ships, better graphics and it runs like a dream on current systems.


Man, what I'd give to see the missile boat or the Tie Defenderin the hands of an Imp Pilot....

X-wing Alliance should work fine on newer opperating systems. I was playing it before I got JTL to practice dogfighting. It re-installed no problem. Only issue was the graphics were a bit dated.

25 ships, about half of which have no mention in existing EU. The customization is a non-issue consideringmany of the remaining ships are relatively worthless due to low mass. When was the last time you saw a Rebel Ace flying a Z-95 - supposedly one of the most common fighters in the galaxy? That brings up the next question, why is the Z-95 Rebel only?


Right now, once you've Aced your selected profession, you have only one or two fighters worth bothering with, I think that throws out the "25 pilotable ships" arguement.

Great list, but I see one thing missing - Laser Convergance.

The sense of speed is not as good as it was in XWA, but then again we are talking about a game here where you have to manage the progression of the players over a longer amount of time in order to keep those subscriptions up There was a progression in ship speed but the "low to high" range was tighter in XWA because it was about the single player experience, not the need to keep those monthly subscription fees coming in.

what i miss? i miss the ability to actually dodge missles without having to use chaff or flares. in fact if you could turn around you could shoot the missle down. The variety of music was great too. As was the huge variety of capital ships, stations, freighters, and transport ships.


i do hope that post-CU we can get things like pilotable shuttles... more content, space sectors, etc. throw in the variety that XWA has.

I liked the option to fire one laser, dual or quad lasers in the X-Wing. I miss being able to toggle weapons like that. Otherwise just about everything has been mentioned.

Agreed, and shield/laser/ energymanagement too. I used to love juggling speed versus shield drain versus laser drain.
